FISH BITES PITTSBURGH PIRATES (75-48) RHP Charlie Morton (8-4, 4.06) vs. MIAMI MARLINS (50-75) LHP Brad Hand (3-3, 4.46) MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FL Tuesday, August 25, 2015 7:10 P.M. The Marlins look to notch their first win of the season series with Pittsburgh tonight in game two of this four-game set at Marlins Park (7:10 p.m.). Miami will send left-hander Brad Hand to the bump tonight; he is 0-0 with a 1.59 ERA in two career starts against the Pirates, including 5.0 shutout innings this season on May 27 at PNC Park. The Buccos will counter with right-hander Charlie Morton, who is 6-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 11 career starts against the Fish, but 3-3, 4.97 in seven starts in South Florida (2-0, 3.75 in two starts at Marlins Park). Miami opened this homestand against Philadelphia (1-3) after coming off a 3-3 road trip to St. Louis (1-2) and Milwaukee (2-1). Following this series, the Marlins travel to Washington (August 28-30) and Atlanta (August 31-September 2) on a six-game road trip. Tonight s National Anthem will be performed by Joseph Morell, and the ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by Sullivan Barrera. VS. THE PIRATES Pittsburgh holds a 4-0 lead in the season series after last night s win and a three-game sweep of the Fish at PNC Park from May 25-27. The Marlins are looking to snap a six-game losing streak to the Buccos; they are just 5-16 against the Pirates since the move to Miami, including a 2-11 mark over the last 13 meetings. Pittsburgh leads the all-time series, 93-79, but Miami has a 48-34 edge in South Florida (4-5 at Marlins Park). LAST NIGHT Miami out-hit the Pirates, 9-8, but Pittsburgh led by a 5-2 count in the runs column to earn its sixth straight win over the Fish. The Marlins trailed by a score of 3-0 when they got on the board in the seventh on a ground out by J.T. Realmuto. That scored Marcell Ozuna, who had doubled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a Casey McGehee ground out. Ozuna also scored Miami s second run, scoring on another ground out by Realmuto in the ninth. Martin Prado (2x4), Ozuna (2x4), and McGehee (2x4) had multi-hit games for the Fish. TODAY S TRANSACTIONS The Marlins today reinstated OF Christian Yelich (right knee contusion) from the 15-day disabled list and placed RHP Kendry Flores on the 15-day disabled list (retro to August 22) with right shoulder tendinitis. A FEW MORE MILESTONES Ichiro Suzuki is on the brink of achieving a few more milestones in his Hall-of-Fame career. His next plate appearance will mark the 10,000 th of his MLB career. According to Stats LLC, he will be the second-fastest player to reach that mark (by seasons); only Pete Rose (14 seasons) will have reached it faster than Ichiro (15). In terms of games played, Ichiro will be the 22 nd fastest (2,324). Also, he needs just two more runs scored to reach 2,000 for his career between MLB (1,340) and Japan (658). He has 114 career triples between MLB (91) and Japan (23), one shy of tying Yutaka Fukumoto for the most career triples by a Japanese player. Lastly, Ichiro has 2,923 career Major League hits, four away from tying Al Simmons (2,927) for 37 th on the all-time list. TRIP AWAY Miami leads the Majors in triples this month, with 11, ahead of Pittsburgh (10) and the Cubs (9). The last time the Marlins led the Majors in triples for a calendar month (excluding March & October) was May 2013, when they had nine. Six Marlins players have recorded a three-bagger this month, led by Dee Gordon and Ichiro Suzuki with three apiece, and followed by Adeiny Hechavarria (2), Derek Dietrich (1), Cole Gillespie (1), and J.T. Realmuto (1). The 11 triples are tied for the thirdmost in a month in Club history (see full list at right). FIND AN ALTERNATE ROUTE J.T. Realmuto last night recorded two RBI without the benefit of a hit. He is the second Marlins player to accomplish that feat this season, joining Brad Hand (August 9 at Atlanta), and just the 15 th player in the Majors this season to record two RBI without a hit. No player has recorded three-plus RBI without a hit. Miami and Cleveland are the only teams with more than one occurrence, as Brandon Moss did so on May 3 vs. Toronto, and David Murphy on May 7 at Kansas City. GETTING ON Martin Prado has reached base safely in 19 of 20 games played since August 2, batting.270 (20x74) with a.348 on-base percentage in that time. During that run, he recorded a 16-game streak of reaching base (Aug. 2-20), which was the third-longest streak of the season for Miami, behind a 24-game run for Christian Yelich (June 26-July 25) and an 18-game streak by Prado (April 19-May 9). BULLPEN ROLLERCOASTER Miami relievers have allowed a run in seven straight games, tied for the longest streak of the season (also, August 2-8). The bullpen has descended into this valley after reaching one of the highest peaks in Club history, as it posted an MLBleading 1.72 ERA in July, which ranked as the second-lowest monthly ERA in team history, behind a 1.58 mark in June 1993. Two things that have remained consistent with the bullpen this season are its ability to strike out batters and keep them in the yard. The Marlins are third in the National League in reliever strikeouts (389), behind Philadelphia (406) and Milwaukee (401), and in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (8.98), behind the Dodgers (10.19) and Milwaukee (9.51). Also, Miami relievers have allowed just 28 home runs, the third-fewest in the NL (tied for third-fewest in MLB with Kansas City); only the Mets (25) and St. Louis (23) have allowed fewer. ATTEMPTING A RARE FEAT Dee Gordon currently leads the National League (and MLB) in batting at.332, ahead of Bryce Harper (.330). Only four second basemen (10 times) have ever won the NL batting title: Jackie Robinson (.342 in 1949), Rogers Hornsby (seven times, last.387 in 1928), Larry Doyle (.320 in 1915), and Ross Barnes (.404 in 1876). - Stats LLC GAME # 126 HOME GAME # 64 (29-34) TONIGHT S BROADCASTS FS FLORIDA WINZ* WAQI^ TOMORROW S GAME INFO START TIME (EDT) - 7:10 P.M.
