CELEBRATING 13 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA Hickory Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2006 FROM THE PRESIDENT More than just a club! The recent loss of my father drove home the fact that the Hickory ASGA Chapter is so very much more than just a club. There are no words to express my gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy and offers of help from so many of my friends and fellow members. As soon as word went out of my loss - without me even asking - many of you immediately assumed my commitments and responsibilities. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I shall never forget. ~ Bill Lautzenheiser, President JULY 4 TH SOCIALS Cookout at Diane s house Diane Laney hosted a mid-afternoon July 4 th party/cookout at her home in Fairwood Acres, Newton. Attending were ASGA members Terry, Diane, Peggy, Bill L., Brenda, & Larry and friends, Donna Walton, Randy Herman, and Wayne Sisk. Participants enjoyed appe- tizers, cocktails, mouth-watering hamburgers, hotdogs, & chicken with all the sides, music, billiards, and great fellowship. Thanks to Diane for hosting! Members gather to celebrate independence Cedar Rock Country Club Patty and Judy were guests of SE Michigan ASGA Chapter member, Dave Dawson (and friends), at Cedar Rock on July 4 th. They enjoyed a delicious barbecue pork/ chicken dinner with all the sides, a live band, and fireworks. Patty, Dave, & Judy GENERAL MEETING in July Eighteen (18) members/guests (Charlene, Dana, Judy, Claudetta, Betty, Larry, Richard, Peggy, Wayne, Brenda, Priscilla, Kim, Lib, Anne S., Virginia, Don, Dale, and guest Randy Herman) attended the Hickory Chapter s regularly scheduled, monthly, ASGA meeting on Thursday, July 13, 2006, at the Oyster Bar/Ramada Inn at 6:30 pm, with Judy Elmore presiding (in Bill L. s absence). Chairman of the Board Judy welcomed everyone to the meeting, announced two (2) new members, acknowledged the July birthdays, and distributed updated calendars/santee registrations to the membership. She urged officers and members-at-large to attend the July 26 th Board Meeting which has been earmarked for the preparation and distribution of the brochures/stands (received recently from ASGA National). Membership Betty announced that we currently have 44 members and numerous prospects. Communications Judy encouraged members to submit items for the newsletter impromptu outings, editorials, and new ideas - and urged members to watch for ASGA golf coverage in local media publications. Golf Peggy announced the July golf outings (Hampton Heights on the 15 th, followed by pool party/cookout at Lib s; Nine & Dine at River Crest on the 6 th & 27 th : Brushy Mtn. Couples Tournament on the 30 th ; and the NC/SC Challenge on the 21 st -23 rd.) The group will play Tanglewood on Sunday, August 20 th, and the Hickory ASGA Club Championship will be held on Sunday, October 22 nd, at a location to be determined. Priscilla greets guest, Randy Herman Socials Claudetta will host a dinner/social after golf on Sunday, July 30 th ; Mike Roane will host a party/cookout on Saturday, August 5 th, at the lake. Anne S. was the winner of the 50/50 raffle, earning $18. After drinks and dinner, all enjoyed listening and dancing to live entertainment. SATURDAY GOLF/SOCIAL in July The dog days of summer had finally arrived when Charlene coordinated a 9:00 am shotgun at Hampton Heights Golf Club in Hickory on Saturday, July 15, 2006 - with twenty-two members/guests in attendance: Virginia, Jim, Dana, Ron, Lib and Charlene hosted July golf, pool party, & cookout Priscilla, Steve, Betty, Phil, Joanne, Anne S., Larry, Ann B., Diane, Claudetta, Richard, Bill L., John, Judy, Lib, Charlene, Ray Kelly (UpState SC Chapter) and guest, Alex Perry. In a Captain s Choice contest, the team of Diane, Ray, and Ann B. endured the heat and humidity to claim victory with a 67. Joined by ASGA member, Brenda, and guests, Donna Walton and Tom Joyce; the golfers wolfed down beef & pork BBQ (provided by the hostesses) with sides of shrimp; cheese ball; potato salad; baked beans; fresh green beans, tomatoes, & cucumbers; deviled eggs; coleslaw; Carolina caviar (see recipe); rolls; and scrumptious desserts. Richard, Tom, Larry, Donna, & Priscilla Golfers frolicked in and around the pool for the remainder of the afternoon enjoying much relief from the blistering day and retired to their homes just in time to avoid a severe thunderstorm. We extend our sincere thanks to Lib and Charlene for their great coordination and generous hospitality! Cool dips & sips for Diane, Ray, & Charlene UPSTATE, SC, OUTING Hickory Chapter member, Sam Davis, golfed with a field of twenty-four (24) in UpState s outing at Links O Tryon in Campbello, SC, on Saturday, July 15 th. Midst grueling, high temperatures (which Sam only thought he left behind in Florida), Sam s team finished in a four-way tie for 1 st place in a Captain s Sam played Links O Tryon with UpState SC Choice round. NINE & DINES in July Nine & Dine was held at River Crest Golf Club on Thursday, July 6 th, with twenty-two (22) members/ guests (Richard, Doug, Diane, Charlene, Marie, Larry, Joanne, Mike R., Terry, Charlie, Patty, Anne S., Phil, Priscilla, Peggy, Sam, Claudetta, Ann B., Ron, Judy, Ed Younger/Asheville Chapter, & guest, Wayne Sisk) competing in a Captain s Choice, 9-hole round. Winning (in a tie) from the scorecard playoff was the team of Claudetta, Ron, Sam, and Peggy with a 69. Golfers enjoyed drinks on the clubhouse deck after golf and dinner at Backstreets. A second Nine & Dine was held on Thursday, July 27 th with sixteen (16) participants (Betty, Bill L., Brenda, Charlie, Claudetta, Gary, Dana, Ed Schneider/ Kentucky, Larry, Marie, Peggy, Phil, Priscilla, Sam, Wayne, and Tom Aroni). In a shamble format Tom and Brenda had the lowest gross scores 36 and 39 respectively; while Tom and Dana earned bucks for low net 25 and 26.. Twelve (12) golfers stayed for dinner and/ or drinks in the clubhouse. NC/SC CHALLENGE Hickory Chapter member, Sam Davis, attended the annual NC/SC Challenge in Southern Pines on July 21-23, 2006. Sam participated on the Pinehurst Team, who won the challenge on Saturday at Seven Lakes Golf Club. The winning team was determined by the average of all the team s individual 18-hole gross scores (minus 80% of their handicaps). The Pinehurst Team averaged a 78, which was two strokes less than any other NC or SC team. Congratulations to Sam and the Pinehurst Team! Sam s Pinehurst Team earns the traveling trophy The foothills attendees played the Carolina Golf Club in Whispering Pines on the following Sunday. The Myrtle Beach Chapter will host the NC/SC Challenge in 2007. Ron, Peggy, Sam, & Claudetta capture the win

BOARD MEETING in July Officers (Bill L., Betty, Judy, Claudetta, and Peggy) held their monthly Board of Director's meeting on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at the Round Wheels Lounge/Holiday Inn Select at 6:00 pm. The group prepared the ASGA brochures/stands, which were received from National, and planned their distribution. Otherwise, most of the new business consisted of finalizing plans for the Lincolnton & Tanglewood golf outings and the Hickory ASGA Club Championship. All attendees enjoyed drinks and free hors d'oeuvres. 1st place Larry and Ron Olde Hickory Tap Room July 9 th Celebrating the July birthdays of Ann Decker (9 th ) and Charlene Walker (11 th ) at 7:30 pm on Sunday evening at the Olde Hickory Tap Room were ASGA members (Charlene, Claudetta, Judy, Don, Anne S., Lib, Patty, Brenda, Ann D., Ann B., Diane, & Richard) and friends, Claudette and Jim Clanton. The birthday girls enjoyed food, drinks, cards, gifts, dancing, and best wishes amid the sound of excellent jazz musicians. Thanks to Claudetta for coordinating the outing. 2nd place Ray and Sam Ann Decker (left center) Hickory officers will distribute ASGA brochures JULY OUTINGS Impromptu River Crest July 2 nd Score one for the men when seventeen (17) members/guests of the Hickory Chapter of ASGA played an impromptu round of golf at River Crest Golf Club during the pre-holiday weekend. Attending were Dana, Jim, Ann B., Sam, Judy, Priscilla, Brenda, Larry, Diane, Peggy, Bill L., Mike R., Charlene, Ron, Phil, Dave Dawson (SE Michigan Chapter), Ray Kelley (UpState SC Chapter), and Hickory guest, Wayne Sisk. The group competed in a 90% handicapped play your own ball with the winners being determined by blind draw pairings. Finishing in 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd places were Ron & Larry (123), Sam & Ray (132), and Dave & Wayne (141). After an afternoon of heat, humidity, and a brief rain shower, the golfers retired to the clubhouse for drinks; and later, to Backstreets for dinner. Thanks to Bill L., Larry, and Peggy for coordinating the unscheduled event. 3rd place Dave and Wayne Lakewood July 9 th Eleven (11) members/guests of the Hickory Chapter of ASGA played an 18- hole individual round at Lakewood Golf Club near Statesville on Sunday, July 9 th. Participating were members (Diane, Priscilla, Richard, Don, Mike R., Larry, Terry, Ron, & Phil) and guests (Tom Joyce and Kerry Russell). Some of the golfers wined and dined at the Oyster Bar later. Diane (with Richard) organized an impromptu game Charlene Walker (left) Catawba Springs July 14 th Ann B. was Bill L. s guest at a recent Lake Hickory Country Club Nine-Hole Couples tournament. According to the duo, the oppressively high humiture contributed greatly to their equally high scores; however, the difficult play made the ensuing dinner/drinks that much more enjoyable. Partnered up are Ann B. and Bill L.

Lake Hickory July 16 th After a scorching day of golf on Saturday, Virginia took Diane, Judy, and Priscilla boating on Sunday. They were joined at the sandbar by Bill L. All agreed that this type of cool activity might be a better alternative to golfing on such dangerously hot days. Virginia, Diane, Priscilla, & Judy embark for the day HANGIN OUT Join fellow ASGA members (eating, drinking, dancing, and recruiting) at Godfrey s (Hwy. 127 North, Hickory) - now featuring DJ s on Wednesday nights and live bands ($10 to $15 cover) on Friday and/or Saturday nights. Also, the Zodiac club, a singles nightclub near Statesville, has a live band for dancing every Friday night ($10 cover); and Rock Barn s lounge, Rocker s, and the Oyster Bar both have live entertainment on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm, respectively. Hickory Alive has resumed for the summer in downtown Hickory on Friday evenings. Virginia & Don two-steppin at the Oyster Bar Diane & Judy put their heads together at Godfrey s Richard, Charlie, & Diane at Backstreets NEW MEMBERS The Hickory Chapter of ASGA bids a sincere welcome to our three (2) newest members, Don McKinney, who has relocated to this area with the Hickory Auto Group having transferred his ASGA membership from the Raleigh Chapter of ASGA; and Wayne Sisk, who is employed with the Cregger Company, Inc. (as well as being selfemployed) & also resides in Hickory. We are so pleased to have all of you! HICKORY CHAPTER EVENTS in AUGUST Saturday August 5 th Mike Roane will host a river party/ cookout with boating at his Lake Hickory home [Hwy. 127 N across Catawba River, right at 2 nd traffic light on Rink Dam Rd. for 1 mi., right on Bowman Court for 1/3 mi., left fork on Twin Coves Rd. for ¼ mi. to house #538, (828) 228-2028] on Saturday, August 5, 2006, beginning at 12:00 noon until. He will provide the dinner entrée(s) hamburgers, hotdogs, & buns and begin their preparation at 4:00-5:00 pm. Members/guests should bring appetizers, sides (slaw, chili, onions, condiments, tomatoes, potato salad, baked beans, etc.), desserts, tea, and/or other picnic accessories (plates, cups, napkins, ice, etc). Virginia enjoys Lake Hickory Monthly Meeting August 10 th The Hickory Chapter of ASGA will hold its next meeting on Thursday, August 10, 2006, at the Oyster Bar/Ramada Inn on I- 40 & Fairgrove Church Rd., at 6:30 pm. All members are encouraged to attend and bring their single golfing friends! Saturday Golf August 12 th A joint-chapter golf outing at Lincoln Country Club in Lincolnton, NC, [321 S/ Exit 24, go left; 321N/Exit 24, go right; 4 or 5 blocks to Harris Teeter, turn right; next traffic light, turn left; club is on right; (704) 735-1382] has been scheduled for Saturday, August 12 th, 2:00 pm shotgun, $23 plus $5 ante. Participants should plan to arrive by at least 1:30 pm and will compete in a shamble format. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1 st and 2 nd place net winners in both male and female divisions; and, gifts will be given for four (4) closest to the pin on par 3 s. Tickets may also be purchased at a cost of $1 each for the 50/50 raffle, which also includes additional drawings for free Terry and Diane Gaskin attended LCC outing last year rounds of golf at LCC. CAROLINA CAVIAR By popular demand, here is Donna Walton s recipe: Mix one (1) can each of these drained items (blackeyed peas, black beans, small yellow Mexican corn, small white corn), one (1) can rotel tomatoes, one (1) small of each (purple onion, red pepper, green pepper), one (1) jar sweet pickled pepper relish, and ½ cup zesty Italian dressing. Chill at least four (4) hours before serving.
