FISH BITES The Marlins conclude the first of two season-long 10-game homestands today with the finale of this four-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks at 1:10 p.m. Miami is looking for its third consecutive series win, after not having not won a series since taking two of three from San Diego at Petco Park from April 21-23. RHP Vance Worley (0-2, 4.50) is making his fifth career start and appearance against Arizona, going 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA. The D-backs are countering with RHP Braden Shipley (0-1, 6.75), who is making his first career start and appearance against the Fish. Today's ceremonial first pitch is being thrown by Dr. Dipen Parekh, and the national anthem is being performed by the Bayview Elementary School Chorus. The first 5,000 fans today will receive a Play Ball Bat Set. Also today, fans are encouraged to donate new or gently used baseball or softball equipment at designated stations outside of the Home Plate and First Base Entrances to the Baseball Tomorrow Fund Equipment Drive. The Baseball Tomorrow Fund is a joint initiative between MLB and the MLBPA that provides grants to organizations involved in the operation of youth baseball and softball programs and facilities. Miami's current homestand began with the Fish taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels and sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game set. Following this afternoon's contest, the Marlins will take off to the Windy City for a three-game series against the defending World Series Champion Chicago Cubs, then follow with a four-game set in the Steel City against the Pittsburgh Pirates. YESTERDAY VS. D-BACKS Edinson Volquez no-hit the Arizona Diamondbacks on the way to a 3-0 Marlins win, their sixth win in the last seven games. On the first play of the game, Volquez collided with Rey Fuentes at first base and came up with an apparent ankle injury, but stayed in the game. He needed just 98 pitches to complete the feat, one that saw him walk two and strike out 10. Miami plated the only run it would need in the fourth on a Justin Bour RBI single to left field. The Marlins added two insurance runs in the eighth on a RBI single by Marcell Ozuna and a RBI double by Bour. Christian Yelich, Ozuna and Bour each went 2x4, while Volquez added a hit of his own. NO-NO IN THE SHOW Here are some notes provided by Stats, LLC from last night's no-hitter by Edinson Volquez. Volquez tossed the 294th no-hitter at the Major League level (122 in AL, 150 in NL, 5 in Federal League, 2 in Union Association, 15 in American Association) and sixth in Marlins history. The six no-hitters by the Marlins are the most of any team since the Franchise's inception in 1993: the Giants have five, Boston, the Dodgers, the Yankees, Philadelphia and Seattle all have four. It marked the 28th no-hitter where the pitcher faced the minimum 27 batters, which includes 19 perfect games. Since 1974, only three pitchers have concluded their no-hitters with three consecutive strikeouts: Volquez, Jake Arrieta (August 30, 2015 vs. Dodgers) and Chris Heston (June 9, 2015 vs. Mets). According to ESPN Stats & Info, Volquez joined David Cone (perfect game in 1999) as the only pitchers in the last 30 years to throw a no-hitter with 10-or-more strikeouts and fewer than 100 pitches. Additionally, Volquez's.125 winning percentage (1-7) entering the game was the lowest in Major League history by a pitcher at the time of his no-hitter (min. 3 decisions). AGAINST THE D-BACKS Miami took four of six from the D-backs in the 2016 series, including a three-game sweep here at Marlins Park from May 3-5. The Marlins are 36-36 against the Diamondbacks in South Florida, 10-11 at Marlins Park, and trail the all-time series, 61-77. UP NEXT The Marlins will take their show on the road following this afternoon's affair and open a three-game series at Wrigley Field against the Cubs starting tomorrow at 8:05 p.m. EST. Miami went 3-4 against Chicago in 2016, taking three of four at Marlins Park before dropping three straight at Wrigley. Miami has gone 92-93 against Chicago all-time, which includes a 46-50 mark in Chicago. WORLEY AND THE WEST In 22 career appearances (17 starts) against National League West teams, Vance Worley has gone 9-4 with two complete games and a career 2.96 ERA. His ERA against the NL West is the lowest of any division he has faced over his career, as his ERA against the AL West is next at 3.18. Among active pitchers with at least 15 starts against the NL West, his ERA ranks ninth. BOUR-ING IT ON On April 17, Justin Bour was batting just.133 (6x45) with no home runs and four RBI in 13 games played. Since going 2x4 with his first home run of the season on April 18, he has hit at a.347 clip (50x144) with 15 home runs and 36 RBI in 41 games to raise his season average to.296. His 15 home runs in that span are tied with Yonder Alonso for the Major League lead, while his average ranks third behind Ryan Zimmerman (.378) and Charlie Blackmon (.356). PICKING UP STEAM Since May 19, Miami's offense has paced Major League Baseball with a.298 average and.357 on-base percentage. In that same span, the Marlins rank fifth in runs scored (79) and sixth in hits (143). Dee Gordon leads Miami's offense in that time, and ranks fifth in the Majors, with a.389 average (21x54), while Justin Bour leads MLB with seven home runs. Bour leads the Club in RBI (15) and is tied with Melky Cabrera and Carlos Correa for fourth in MLB, while JT Riddle (13) is tied for 10th and Giancarlo Stanton (12) is tied for 14th. FRANCHISING With his 15th home run of the season Friday night, an opposite-field shot in the fifth inning, Giancarlo Stanton broke a tie with Mike Lowell to become the Marlins all-time RBI leader with 579. Stanton already owns Franchise records for go-ahead RBI (154), game-winning RBI (75), home runs with (223) and extra-base hits (415). He currently ranks second in total bases (1722) and fifth in hits (851). On September 6, 2006, Anibal Sanchez, making just his 13th career start, threw the fourth no-hitter in Marlins' history in a 2-0 win over Arizona at Sun Life Stadium. It was the 233rd no-hitter in Major League history (127th in NL), the 19th by a rookie, and the second by a Venezuelan pitcher. Last night, Edinson Volquez tossed the sixth no-hitter in Marlins history. It was the 294th in Major League history (150th in NL) and the seventh by a Dominican pitcher. Giancarlo Stanton has 13 home runs and 36 RBI against Arizona since the start of 2010.
