There are several pleasant country walking routes which involve climbing out of the valley and using footpaths which occasionally can be a little rough and muddy at times. During bad weather the walk tends to stay close to the village along quiet country roads. The Garden Centre Cafe/Restaurant makes an excellent place to enjoy a hot beverage or even lunch, with a selection of freshly made meals and desserts

Bury Hospice Walk & Talk When: Every 1 st & 3 rd Tuesday of the month (Starting on Tuesday 19 th June) Time: 10:30am Duration: Approx. 60 minutes Meeting Point: Main Reception at Bury Hospice, Rochdale Old Road, Bury BL9 7RG Walk Leader(s): Chris Green About this walk Starting at the top car park at the hospice we join Castle Hill Road & head up towards the Church Inn. This is a quiet area of countryside, flanked by green fields occupied by horses. We make our way towards the Pavilion residential community & Restaurant on Elbut Lane, then take a pleasant walk around the Lodge where there are birds, ducks & swans nesting at certain times of the year. Please note, the walk around the lodge can be muddy during wet weather & appropriate footwear is recommended. This walk is mainly on level ground. **Light refreshments can be enjoyed at the hospice following the walk & sandwiches & salads may be available if ordered before the walk begins. Buggy & Sling Friendly Walk When: Every Tuesday Time: 1:00pm Duration: Approx. 60-90 minutes Meeting Point: By the Fountain in Prestwich Village Walk Leader: Betty-Ann Bristow-Castle About this walk... Our buggy friendly walk welcomes new mums, dads and child carers to join us for refreshing stroll through areas of Prestwich. Routes may vary pending on the weather and may include; walking through areas of Prestwich Clough & St Mary s Flower Park before returning to one of the village s baby friendly cafes, OR walking through Heaton Park, where there are a variety of well laid paths & wildlife to be seen. This walk also stops to visit one of the park s cafes before returning to Prestwich Village. There are optional hop on & off points to these walks, depending on how long you wish to be out for and this is best shared in advance through the group s Facebook page, however, the main meeting place & time stated above will remain the same. Ainsworth District Community Health Walk When: Every Tuesday (Starting on Tuesday 19 th June) Time: 1:00pm Duration: Approx. 90 minutes Meeting Point: Outside the Duke William, Well Street, Ainsworth, BL2 5SQ Walk Leader(s): Brian Cooke & Brian Oseman About this walk Starting outside the Duke William Public House, this circular walk takes in the pleasant countryside around Ainsworth, past woodland & farmland with some lovely views to be had along the way. There are a few alternative walking routes mainly along good paths and level ground, however most routes do include crossing one or more footpath stiles, which may be challenging for anyone with limited mobility or poor balance. Some routes include a visit to the local Garden Centre Café, where walkers can choose to purchase a drink or light refreshment before heading back to the Duke William where the walk ends. Strong sturdy footwear is recommended.

Wednesday... BEATS (Bury Exercise & Therapy Scheme) Community Health Walks When: Every Wednesday Time: 1:00pm Duration: Approx. 30-45 minutes Meeting Point: Castle Leisure Centre Walk Leader(s): Siobhan Pimlott, Paula Rees/ Brian Cooke About the walk... This 1-mile circular walk heads down through the underpass, following the dual footpath where it joins the Irwell River. The walk then continues along the Riverside to the footbridge where it then turns right and heads south alongside the Route 6 Cycleway past the Community Fire Station and heading west along Magdalene Road, back along the dual pathway, through the underpass and returning to Castle Leisure Centre. This is our shortest walk within our Walking for Health led walk offer and is aimed at beginners and those returning to exercise after illness or injury as well as those who maybe living with one or more long term health conditions. This walk is mainly on level ground, although the footpath alongside the river may be a little muddy at times and sturdy footwear is recommended. *This walk is buggy & wheelchair friendly!! * Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead!

Thursday... Radcliffe District Community Health Walk When: Every Thursday Time: 1:00pm Duration: Approx. 90 minutes (Including a 15-minute rest/coffee break) Meeting Point: Radcliffe Leisure Centre Walk Leader(s): Jean Foster & Paula Rees About this walk Starting at Radcliffe Leisure Centre, this circular walk heads along the locally known 'banana path' to the old canal side. Once on the tow path there are a couple of route options that can be use, but typically this walk incorporates a canal side stroll with pleasant countryside views and associated wildlife. There will also be a café stop, where walkers can enjoy a wellearned coffee/tea break before continuing with the return walk back to Radcliffe. Please Note: Whilst this walk is mainly flat under foot and uses established pathways, it may be muddy in places (especially after bad weather) and may include crossing a short field path and tram lines. Walkers are advised to wear sturdy, comfortable footwear & a warm, waterproof coat in bad weather.

Friday... This 3-mile circular walk follows the same route as the 1-mile route on a Wednesday up until the footbridge, where it then crosses the River Irwell and heads into Burrs Country Park, following the River footpath to the Activity Centre, where walkers can sit outdoors & enjoy a short rest before heading back to Castle Leisure Centre, (so please bring along a flask/cold drink & light snack if you wish). These walks are mainly on level ground, although the footpath alongside the river may be a little muddy at times and sturdy waterproof footwear is recommended. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead!

Saturday... Prestwich District Community Health Walk When: Every Saturday Time: 10:30am Duration: Approx. 60-75 Minutes Meeting Point: St. Mary s Church, Church Lane, Prestwich Walk Leader(s): Ann Bowes & Brian Oseman About the walk... This woodland, water & lake circular walk lasts usually just over an hour. There are some uneven surfaces which can be a little muddy at times, especially in bad weather. The walk usually includes walking through areas of Prestwich Clough, Drinkwater Park and Waterdale Park, although the route may vary depending on conditions.

CONGRATULATIONS! To 3 of our amazing Walking for Health Volunteer Walk Leaders who have won the 2018 Rambler s Volunteer of the Year Award in the Inspiring Walkers Category. Eileen, Ann & Brian have been Volunteer Walk Leaders for our Bury Walking for Health scheme since the very beginning. Between them, over the past 3 years they have collectively delivered over a remarkable 400 Walking for Health walks, equating to over 600 volunteer hours, helping to improve the health & wellbeing of over 300 unique walkers with an outstanding participation to their walks recording over 4,500 attendances so far. Not only have these 3 individuals been long standing, dedicated volunteer walk leaders to our scheme, but each has also played a significant supporting role in helping to mentor and guide new volunteers through their Walk Leader Training enabling us to grow & expand our scheme and walking offer to other communities within the borough.. A special thank you on behalf of Bury Sport and Physical Activity Service goes out to each of you and to all of our amazing Volunteer Walk Leaders who give up their time each week to lead walks for our Bury communities.

Although these walks are not part of the Walking for Health scheme (As they require the use of Nordic Poles & include a small charge for instruction), there is no doubt that these walks are still of great benefit to our physical health & wellbeing. Furthermore, as we will provide the Nordic Poles for you, there s no need to worry about the expense of purchasing additional walking equipment. *Just remember to book your place in advance* using the contacts overleaf & bring along a pair of comfortable shoes and a waterproof coat if you have one.

How you can get involved Walk with Me is a series of local walks, led by trained walk leaders in association with Bury Sport & Physical Activity Service and the National Walking for Health Scheme. Our walks are free, fun and friendly perfect to help you get active and meet new people. If you d like to take part, all you have to do is come along to the start point of one of our walks a few minutes early, so that one of our trained walk leaders can take your details. Then you re free to take part in as many walks as you like, as often as you like.
