The Hewitt-Trussville HS Engineering Academy Civil Engineering and Architecture class has taken on the task of making seating for HTHS students during Husky Hour. One week into the project and the class has completed 10 benches. They now have to finish sanding, staininig and polyurethaning the new benches. Way to go students! ******************************************* Congrats to HTHS Student, Devin Johnson Devin Johnson was the youngest participant in the GM Automotive Service Educational program at Lawson State Community College this past summer. Devin completed two courses- Automotive Engines and Advanced Automotive Engines- with grades of 100% in both. Devin was even selected to work on an engine while the program was being observed by GM mechanics

Great Job Devin! *************************************************** Stream Day in Mrs. Gerhart's Environmental Science Class from HTHS Students collected animal samples, tested for soil nutrients, tested for water quality, and we will use this data to discuss natural resources, natural capital and ecosystem services as part of our unit. Page 10 of 22 *************************************** HTMS Student and Trussville Resident to be Featured in the Bright Lights of Times Square in New York City in the Annual Video Presentation by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) HTMS student Hannah Baker to Help Kick Off Down Syndrome Awareness Month in Unique Annual Video Presentation NEW YORK, NY - Hannah Baker, an 8th grader at HTMS in Trussville, Alabama, will appear in the bright lights of Broadway on Saturday, September 17, as part of the National Down Syndrome Society's (NDSS) annual Times Square Video presentation. The featured photographs highlight children, teens, and adults with Down syndrome, reminding the world in a very big way about the contributions and milestones of people with Down syndrome. These collective images promote the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome, which is the mission of NDSS. The photo of Hannah, who happens to have Down syndrome, was selected from over 2,000 entries in the NDSS worldwide call for photos. Over 400 photographs will appear in the video, which will be shown in the heart of Times Square. Hannah is pictured with her friend, Kari Balazs, who also has Down syndrome and is a student at Hoover High School in Birmingham, while at their favorite location, 30A on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The Times Square Video presentation kicks off Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. The video presentation will be followed by the 22nd Annual Flagship Buddy Walk in New York City. This year, Buddy Walk events will be held in more than 275 cities across the country, as well as select international locations, in and around October with over 325,000 people participating around the globe. Paine Elementary student Caroline Mauldin wrote an essay on why the Paine Mascot should be named, "Champ". Here is her essay stating why the Paine Husky should be named Champ: "The new Paine husky should be named Champ. The new husky should be named Champ because as a Husky we are champs with our attitude and with our grades. If you are a Champ you show good character including having sportsmanship, showing kindness to everybody, being respectful, and always being helpful. The Paine husky should be named Champ because by showing good character and having a good attitude champ is the perfect role model for young students. I think the husky should be named Champ so each and every student will try to be more and more like Champ!!!" Way to go Caroline! You hit a homerun with your essay!

Page 18 of 22 Paine Elementary music teacher, Dr. Brian Cocke, collaborated with Paine Elementary fourth grade teachers to design and present a program on September 22 that focused on 4th grade social studies standards and PACE (the TCS character education program). Dr. Cocke integrated the standards with music through his classes with fourth graders. Parents filled the bleachers to affirm their children and their new learning. After the program, parents were invited to stop by the fourth grade halls to view students' work that was posted in the hallway.
