The Pack enters the event with a 16-5 (0-4 ACC) record, while the Bears roam into town at 9-5. NC State has won two of its last four matches, while Brown has dropped four straight. Brown and NC State has faced off in each of the previous two seasons, splitting those contests. The Bears downed the red and white, 4-0, in 2004, while the Pack upset a No. 59 Brown squad one season ago, 4-3. NO. 29 IN ITA POLL: NC State sits at No. 29 nationally, four spots lower than its previous ranking, in the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Tuesday, March 21. Last season the Pack finished the year ranked No. 46 after starting the season at No. 75. This year NC State started the season at No. 45, which stands as the highest season opening position for the team since the ITA began preseason distinctions in the late 1980s. CAVADAY CRACKS FILA SINGLES RANKINGS: Sophomore Nick Cavaday is currently ranked No. 43 nationally in singles according to the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the ITA. With an 8-8 record, Cavaday has anchored the No. 1 singles spot for the Pack during all but one match that he has participated in. Against ranked foes, Cavaday posts a 1-6 record, downing No. 48 Bruno Agonstinelli of Kentucky, 6-2, 6-3. Ending his freshman season at NC State with a No. 108 national ranking in singles, Cavaday posted a 14-9 solo mark last year, while going 5-5 in ACC competition. BANADA, SHAW GAIN RECOGNITION IN DOUBLES: Senior doubles combo Val Banada and Will Shaw are currently ranked No. 76 nationally in the combo poll. The duo boasts a 11-7 record, all at No. 1, and have downed two ranked opponents thus far. 2005-06 WOLFPACK MEN S TENNIS ROSTER Name Ht. Wt. Cl. WOLFIES STEADILY CLIMB RANKINGS: NC State has jumped 16 spots in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings since the first poll was released on Jan. 10. Of the nine polls so far, the Pack has improved upon its ranking six times. Here s a look at where the team has landed. The 16 wins mark the first time an NC State squad has won that many matches since coach Henry Brandon s 1983 team. The most victories any Pack team has ever collected in one year came under legendary coach J.W. Isenhour, with the 1978 and 79 teams both earning 19 bragging rights. The 79 group collected the lone conference title in school history, while the 78 version earned the program s first NCAA bid. TOP WINNING WOLFPACK SEASONS CLASS W-L 1978 19-2 1979 19-3 1980 17-2 1977 17-3 2006 16-5 1983 16-8 DOUBLES POINT IS THE KEY: Although the Pack has only surrendered points in 12 of its 21 matches this spring, the doubles point has been a critical part to the teams success. NC State has won doubles 16 times, dropping it at Kentucky, at Louisville and against Duke, Wake Forest and Virginia. Team duos currently hold a 46-17 record in doubles play, with junior William Noblitt and sophomore Ben Zink standing at 15-2 with eight wins at the No. 2 spot. Senior Will Shaw and freshman Jay Weinacker both have five wins at No. 5, with Weinacker holding six more at No. 6. WATCH OUT FOR WEINACKER: He might be a freshman, but he certainly doesn t play like one. Jay Weinacker currently leads the team in spring singles wins with an 17-2 record. In reality, Weinacker s success thus far might not be such a surprise considering that he enrolled at NC State after being ranked No. 1 in the USTA Southern Section at the end of his prep career. PACK VERSUS RANKED TEAMS...: When it comes to taking on ranked opponents, NC State seems comfortable with the challenge. So far this season, the Wolfpack have taken on eight nationally ranked teams, picking up victories in three of those contests. Against No. 71 Old Dominion, the Pack won two doubles and four singles bouts to take a 5-2 decision. At No. 19 Kentucky, NC State won four singles bouts to pull the upset, 4-3. The Pack, however, wasn t as fortunate at No. 34 Louisville, falling 6-1 while picking up just one singles and one doubles victory. On the road against No. 31 South Carolina, NC State collected all doubles and four singles matches to pick up the win, 5-2. The Pack dropped a heartbreaker at home to No. 4 Duke, 4-3, collecting three singles bouts, before losing to No. 31 Wake Forest, 5-2, on the road. NC State later fell at Virginia Tech, 4-3, and Virginia, 6-1.... Banada later topped No. 77 Doug Stewart of Virginia, 7-5, 7-5. In doubles play, the Pack is 3-5 against ranked pairs. Cavaday and freshman Chris Welte knocked off Old Dominion s Henry Cancado and Eidy Igarashi (No. 33), 8-6. Seniors Val Banada and Will Shaw trumped Jeremy Clark and Jakob Gustafsson (No. 47) of Louisville, 9-8 (3), before downing South Carolina s Geraldo Knorr and Yevgeny Supeko (No. 47), 9-7. ACC IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN: In the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings revealed by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday, March 21, all but one of the 12 Atlantic Coast Conference teams were ranked in the top-68, with six landing in the top-25. The Wolfpack blew by Navy, before besting UNCW, 5-2, on Friday, March 3, then beat Elon, 5-2, before routing ECU on Sunday, March 5. NC State will partake in one more doubleheader this season, this time on the road. On Saturday, March 18, the Pack flew by Charlotte, 6-1, before having its way with Davidson. NOBLITT GRABS ACC HONOR: Junior William Noblitt picked up Co-ACC Player of the Week honors for the week of January 23 after posting a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles during the first week of the spring season. Noblitt helped the Pack get off to a 3-0 start with shutout wins over High Point, Gardner-Webb and North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Jan. 21. Against High Point, Noblitt took down Jake Notton at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1, after winning at No. 3 doubles with sophomore partner Ben Zink, 8-6, over Ben Deloume and Notton. Noblitt won again at No. 2 singles over Gardner-Webb s Kern Phillip, 6-0, 6-0, and later grabbed a fourth victory at No. 2 doubles with Zink, besting NC A&T s Jared and Jeremy Martin, 8-1.
