Swimming Appalachian State Swimming has been off to a great start this year. After winning our first home meet we have been practicing hard for our next meet this weekend, November 5th and 6th, at Elon. Over 300 swimmers will be at the meet with around 20 teams. We have introduced dryland workouts as well as the coach working with many swimmers on their techniques. The swim team will be bringing 50 people to our first away meet of the year and couldn t be more excited. We think we have a shot of placing well and have been working hard to do so. -article by Dan Wallace (Secretary) 2
All We Do Is Win! The Men s Ultimate team can t seem (3rd in the region last year), and Georgia to stop winning! The team traveled to (who was ranked #1 in the country a Raleigh two weeks ago to compete at the few years ago). Then there is little ole Wolf Pack Invitational No one even saw us coming Appalachian State who placed 9th out of 10 in the tournament. This tournament featured section last year and seeded 11th out of some of the top teams in the State and 16 at this tournament. No one even saw us Region including NC State, UNC, UNCW coming. (1st in our section last year), Virginia Tech 3
We walked into Saturday s games with a confidence and swagger like no other. We were determined to prove that the National Championship bid we had received two weeks earlier was no fluke and that we are one of the best teams in the State. The day started off with a game against Virginia Tech, the #1 seed in our pool and we figured since the Football team couldn t beat them it would have to be up to us. Stunning Virginia Tech 15-9 we moved on through pool play undefeated. This set us up for a crossover game against Georgia who was the overall #1 seeded team of the tournament, after a hard fought game we lost With Saturday s success, we earned a #1 seed in the bracket for Sunday, meeting UNCW in the first round. This game is a game that will go down in Appalachian State Ultimate history. After a dismal first half, we found ourselves down 8-3. Refusing to let our weekend end in the first round, the Nomads dug deep We walked into Saturday s games with a confidence and swagger like no other within ourselves and we pulled off the improbable comeback scoring 11 points in the second half to beat UNCW 15-14! Moving on to the semi-finals against UNC, unfortunately the Nomads could not keep up the intensity. We had spent it all in the previous game and we fell to UNC Defeated but still elated as we had just made it to the semi-finals of tournament that we finished 10th in last year. We ended up with 3rd place with UNC winning it all and Virginia Tech (who we beat) finishing 2nd. While we ended 3rd it is safe to say that Appalachian State was easily the second best team at the tournament. We move on from this success carrying a 12-2 record for the year. Looking to add to the wins, the Nomads are hosting our annual home tournament, the Blue Ridge Blowout, along with the Women s team this Saturday and Sunday November 5th and 6th at State Farm Fields. We are hosting 32 teams from around the Region. Hoping to create a home field advantage, we encourage everyone to come out and support us! - article by Daniel Niwnski (Vice President) 4
Women s Lacrosse The Women s Lacrosse team for Appalachian State traveled to Duke University on October 23rd and once again, proved to be a threat on the field. First the Mountaineers took on Duke. Fans were impressed by Appalachian s start, scoring multiple goals immediately. Duke soon realized that beating this team would not be an easy task. The game soon picked up and the two evenly matched teams played hard with the drive to win. Unfortunately, during the second half Appalachian lost their intensity enough to let Duke pull ahead. The team snapped back into game mode after Duke had a lead but to their dismay, did not have time to catch back up. The final score was Appalachian s team was disappointed that they lost their lead, although playing so well against Duke University was an accomplishment in and of itself. continued on page 7 5

Almost immediately, App had to get back on the field to face UNC-Wilmington. After losing such a close game, the girls were ready to win. Exhaustion was not an option. UNCW was unprepared for Appalachian s sturdy wall of defense, aggressive attack and numerous goalie saves. The game was high scoring and an enjoyable one to watch and play. App beat UNCW 10-6; their first time beating UNCW in their team s history. After their successful day, Kelsey Collins, a senior stated, In my four years of playing, this is by far the best team we have ever had. This weekend especially; we worked well with each other and played as a unit. Players and fans couldn t agree more and are excited to see what this cohesive team has in store. The Women s Lacrosse Team will head to East Carolina University for a weekend-long tournament on November 12th. The team looks forward to reporting their success! -article by Anna Norwood (Team Member) 7

Women s Rugby On October 23rd the Women s rugby team played our alumni in the annual Alumni/ Homecoming match. We had an amazing game and beat the alumni This was an especially triumphant game for us because this was the first time in about three years that we have won against our alum. Everyone that played did a great job listening and playing as a team. The next couple of weeks we will be practicing hard for our upcoming matches. We have games scheduled for the next three weekends. This upcoming weekend we are traveling to South Carolina to play against Clemson University. The following week we are traveling to Duke University and November 19th we are set to play UNCG s team in Boone. We are looking forward to our upcoming games and will be working hard to get in shape. -article by Susan Harrill (Vice President) Photo Competition! 12 Racquetball The Appalachian State Racquetball club attended a collegiate tournament in Lynchburg, Virginia during the October 21st to the 23rd weekend. Three students traveled where they knew they would meet their match. It was reported that students had an enjoyable time. Two more tournaments are schedule for the year; one in Lynchburg, Virginia and the other is scheduled in Raleigh, North Carolina at North Carolina State University. It will more than likely be a well sanctioned tournament held by the NCRA. We are very excited about our future plans and hope they all work out. -article by Patrick Scott Langley (Vice President) Support Club Sports by buying and wearing a Club Sports Shirt from the Bookstore! Men s Lacrosse The Fall Season for the Men s Club Lacrosse has coming to an end. Our final game against UNC resulted in a victory, 16 to 3. We are very pleased to get this win and look forward to the Spring Season and what will happen. Our record for this fall has turned out to be 1-2. This fall has been a building season for our team as we have new coaches and many new players. 13 Alpine Ski The Alpine Ski Team is anxiously awaiting the opening of Sugar Mountain, expected early November. In the meantime, the team s dryland practices have been off to a great start. We have been incorporating strength and cardio exercises into our routine twice a week. A second informational meeting yielded a few more eager skiers to join us for the winter, and the team is excited to get back on the hill after a long off-season. The team is also anticipating an impressive turnout at the movie premier of Matchstick Production s newest film, Attack of La Nina, on November 15th in the IG Greer Auditorium. The showing will be free to all students, and it will be a fun night with the Ski Team and Red Bull. We have recently finalized our schedule for the Spring 2012 semester, and the team will race both the slalom and giant slalom disciplines at five mountains throughout Virginia, West Virginia, and here in the High Country. Our home opener weekend will be at Sugar Mountain, on January 15th and 16th. Until then, we are waiting for snow and getting everyone geared up for the season. -article by Rosie Hewitt (Secretary) Upcoming Events November 5-6, Men s/women s Ultimate, Blue Ridge Blowout, State Farm Fields November 5, Climbing Competition, Alabama - Elon - Equestrian IHSA Western Show, Williamston, NC - Volleyball WCU - Women s Clemson - Ice Hockey vs. WFU, Extreme Ice Center, Charlotte, NC November 6, Equestrian IHSA Horse Show, Tanglewood Farm November 12, Men s Rugby vs. WCU, State Farm Fields November 16, Club Sports Council November 6, Next Club Sports Illustrated Check us out on 12
