4 RAMSEY SMITH Head Coach Sixth Season at Duke Duke, 2001 Ramsey Smith enters his sixth season as the Duke men s tennis head coach. He was announced as the 11th head coach in Duke men s tennis history in June, Smith, a former Duke men s tennis standout, served on the Blue Devils coaching staff for three seasons as an assistant coach and associate head coach prior to accepting the head coaching position. He returned to his alma mater in the season as an assistant coach. After just two seasons he was promoted to associate head coach for the campaign. In five seasons at the helm of the Duke program, Smith has compiled an overall record of and a Atlantic Coast Conference ledger with four straight 20-win seasons. He has taken the Blue Devils to the NCAA Championship in each of his five seasons, winning the first round match each time. Under his watch, Duke has had one ITA National Doubles Team of the Year, one ITA National Rookie of the Year, one ITA Arthur Ashe National Sportsmanship and Leadership Award winner, seven All-Americas selections, three ITA Regional Seniors of the Year, three ITA Regional Rookies of the Year, two ACC Players of the Year, one ACC Rookie of the Year, 10 All-ACC selections and 21 named to the ACC All- Academic team. Last season, the Blue Devils finished the year 25-6 to match the 1999, 2000 and 2012 squads for the second most wins in program history. The team completed the season ranked seventh in the final ITA rankings for the highest final team ranking since the 2006 season. The Blue Devils advanced to the quarterfinals for the eighth time overall and the second consecutive season. Henrique Cunha, Fred Saba and Michael Redlicki competed in the NCAA Singles Championships, while Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler as well as Redlicki and Jason Tahir competed in the doubles competition. Cunha and Hemmeler reached the semifinals of the competition to earn All-America honors and concluded the season as the nation s top-ranked duo. The squad completed the regular season second in the ACC standings with a 9-1 ledger and finished with an undefeated 15-0 mark at home for the first time since the campaign. Cunha, Saba and Redlicki were selected to the All-ACC team, with Cunha earning ACC Player of the Year recognition for the second time in his four seasons. Hemmeler paced the squad with 35 singles wins, including a team-leading 25 wins in the dual season. Chris Mengel was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the third consecutive season as the team led the conference in representatives on the All-ACC Academic Team. In , the Blue Devils finished the year 25-6 and completed the season ranked eighth in the final ITA poll. The team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2001, while Cunha and Mengel also competed in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. Duke concluded ACC play with a 9-2 ledger to finish second in the final regular season standings and reached the championship match of the ACC Championship for the third straight year, falling to Virginia by a 4-1 score. Both Cunha and Mengel were selected to the All-ACC team, with Cunha picking up all-conference honors. Saba paced the squad with a 10-1 record in ACC singles play, joining teammates Mengel and Luke Marchese as the only Blue Devils in program history to reach the 10-wins mark. In Smith led the Blue Devils to a overall record, the school s highest win total since Duke went 9-2 in ACC play to tie for second in the conference and made the ACC Championship finals for the second straight year. Smith also guided his squad to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championship and the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. He coached three players to 30-win seasons in singles, marking just the third time it has happened in school history. Both Reid Carleton and Cunha received All-America honors in singles and doubles. The two players advanced to the quarterfinals in the NCAA doubles championships while Cunha also made the quarterfinals in singles and Carleton the round of 64. 4

5 In Smith was named the ITA Carolina Region Coach of the Year after leading Duke to its best season since The Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 and made the finals of the ACC Tournament for the first time since winning the title in Duke finished the season with a 20-9 record and was second in the ACC with a 9-2 record. Smith coached Cunha to one of the best seasons in school history, as he earned ITA National Rookie of the Year and ACC Player of the Year honors while receiving the No. 1 seed in both singles and doubles at the NCAA Championships. Cunha made the semifinals in singles and teamed with Carleton to earn All-America status by reaching the quarterfinals in doubles. The duo was named the ITA National Doubles Team of the Year after ranking No. 1 in each of the final five polls. In his first season as the Blue Devils head coach, Smith guided Duke to a 16-9 record and 7-4 mark in the ACC. The first-year head coach turned things around for the program, posting a.640 winning percentage after the team went (.440) in , its first losing season since The Blue Devils advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the year ranked No. 23 nationally. Kiril Dimitrov was named to the All-ACC squad. Smith has excelled on the recruiting front in his four seasons. His first year he brought in Cunha, who earned National Rookie of the Year honors. The second class under Smith was the No. 1 rated recruiting class in according to Tennisrecruiting.net. The three players in the class combined to win 62 singles matches as freshmen, led by Mengel who went and earned ITA Regional Rookie of the Year honors. In the third signing class, Smith picked up his second international recruit with Raphael Hemmeler coming from Switzerland and also signed blue chip recruit Jason Tahir, a top-10 player from New York. The two combined for 52 wins in singles as freshmen and Hemmeler won a team-high 30 matches in doubles. In his fourth class, Smith brought in the third ranked recruiting class according to Tennisrecruiting.net. The class was headlined by Michael Redlicki, a native of Chicago, who was a blue chip recruit ranked sixth by Tennisrecruiting.net. Smith also signed his third international recruit with Bruno Semenzato coming from Brazil. Smith also started the Royal Blue Club while he was an assistant coach for Duke, a Duke tennis fan club that gives special promotions for men s and women s matches. Smith has also helped the Blue Devils raise money for new indoor and outdoor courts and scoreboards as well as a new video system with cameras on all six indoor and outdoor courts. A native of Hilton Head, S.C., Smith lettered four seasons at Duke from and ranks third all-time in school history with 119 career singles victories. He helped the Blue Devils to four-year records of overall and an undefeated 32-0 mark in conference regular season action. From Duke claimed four ACC Championships, four top 10 national rankings and three NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearances. Smith finished his career with a singles record and doubles ledger. A staple in the ITA singles and doubles rankings, Smith was ranked as high as No. 5 in singles in 2001 and No. 5 in doubles in 2000 with Doug Root. He was ranked in the top-10 in singles for four consecutive rankings during his senior season. Smith was a two-time All-America earning the honor in 2000 and He was named All-ACC three times in 1999, 2000 and Smith was named the ACC Tournament MVP in the 2000 and 2001 ACC Championship victories. In addition, he was a two-time recipient of the Tennis Magazine/Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award and was named to the ACC s 50th Anniversary Team in After receiving his bachelor of arts degree in economics from Duke in 2001, Smith played one year of professional tennis. He posted an ATP world ranking of 603 in singles and 723 in doubles before suffering a career-ending shoulder injury in September of He reached the semifinals at Futures Tournaments in Malibu, Calif., Chetumal, Mexico, and Little Rock, Ark. Following his professional career, Smith worked with the Stan Smith Billy Stearns Tennis Academy, where he served as a coach, camp organizer and academy secretary for three years. He also spent three summers ( ) as a full-time fly fishing guide with Alaska West Sportfishing. During his three seasons as an assistant coach, Smith helped lead Duke to a overall record and mark in the ACC. Under his tutelage the Blue Devils produced five All-Americas, eight All-ACC selections and one ACC Tournament MVP in just three seasons. Duke made the NCAA Tournament each year, advancing as far as the round of 16 in That season the Blue Devils also captured the ACC Tournament Championship with a 4-3 win over Virginia after trailing 3-0 in the match. Smith successfully completed the USTA High Performance Coaching Program in Carson, Calif. in 2007 and is a USPTA certified Teaching Professional. Born September 4, 1978, Ramsey and his wife Kathy currently reside in Durham with their daughter Sofie. 6 JONATHAN STOKKE Assistant Coach Fourth Season at Duke Duke, 2006 Jonathan Stokke enters his fourth season as an assistant coach at Duke University. He was named to his position with the Duke men s tennis team in July, highly ranked junior players under the guidance of Stan Smith and Billy Stearns at Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, S.C. In , Stokke helped guide the Blue Devils to a 25-6 record to match the 1999, 2000 and 2012 squads for the second most wins in program history. The program also reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in school history and earned a No. 7 listing in the final ITA rankings for the highest final team ranking since the 2006 season. The team completed its home schedule with an undefeated 15-0 record, marking the first undefeated regular season for the squad since the campaign. Stokke became the second coach under head coach Ramsey Smith to be named the ITA Carolina Region Assistant Coach of the Year and the third in the program s history. Stokke graduated from Duke in May, 2006, with a degree in sociology and a certificate in markets and management. In 2006, he earned All-America honors in doubles with teammate Joey Atas. He was a two-time All-ACC selection in 2003 and 2004 and was named the ACC Tournament MVP in He also is the only player in school history to win the ITA National Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership award, claiming the honor in He also earned the USTA Sportsmanship Award that season, joining Ramsey Smith as the only other player in school history to do so. Stokke also picked up numerous academic honors, including a selection to the first ever Academic All-ACC team and three seasons on the ACC Honor Roll. During the campaign, Stokke helped direct the Blue Devils to a 25-6 record and the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament while earning a No. 8 listing in the final ITA rankings. The team also reached the ACC Tournament finals for the third consecutive season, the second under the guidance of Stokke. In his first season with the Blue Devils, Stokke helped guide the team to a overall record and 9-2 mark in ACC play. The season was highlighted by a trip to the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, a round of 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament and a trip to the ACC Tournament finals. Stokke led Duke to an impressive year in doubles with Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha posting a 38-7 record and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Individual Championships to earn All-America honors. Stokke joined the coaching staff of his alma mater after working as an assistant women s tennis coach at Wake Forest University for two years. Stokke directed the Demon Deacons to a overall record and an NCAA Tournament selection in He saw two players earn spots on the 2010 All-ACC team, including Martina Pavelec, who also received the ITA Carolina Region Player to Watch award. Prior to working at Wake Forest, Stokke spent two years providing instruction to In his career at Duke, Stokke played in four straight NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 three times. In 2006 he was a team captain on Duke s ACC Championship team. For his career Stokke had a overall singles record and a doubles mark. His 93 singles wins rank as the 11th most in Duke history while his 113 doubles wins are second only to Doug Root all-time. He was in singles and 28-9 in doubles in ACC matches. His 28 doubles wins are a school record while his 25 victories in singles rank tied for sixth most. He was ranked in the top 20 in the ITA in singles and top 10 in doubles during his playing career with the Blue Devils. During his junior tennis career, Stokke won three National hard court doubles championships at Kalamazoo and three National clay court doubles championships. He also played in the U.S. Open main draw in 2001 and 2002 and was a member of the 2000 USTA Youth World Cup team. He was awarded the USTA Sportsmanship award at Kalamazoo two times. A graduate of East Chapel Hill High School, Stokke was the recipient of two sportsmanship awards at the Super National Championships and was ranked as high as No. 10 on the 2002 USTA Juniors list. 21 SEASON IN REVIEW BLUE DEVILS END SEASON IN TOP 10: u Duke finished the season listed seventh in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, with the No. 7 final ranking representing the highest for the program since earning a No. 6 listing at the end of the 2006 season. The team started the season with a No. 5 listing and remained in the top 10 all season. INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS: u The Blue Devils closed the season with an all-time best three ranked tandems in doubles and tied the program s all-time mark with four players listed in the season s final rankings in singles. Senior Henrique Cunha and sophomore Raphael Hemmeler became the second duo in Duke men s tennis history to finish the season as the top-ranked duo in the nation, as Cunha and Reid Carleton became the first ranked duo after the 2010 season. Jason Tahir and Michael Redlicki closed the season as the 27th-ranked tandem in the nation, while Chris Mengel and Fred Saba concluded the season ranked 72nd. In singles, Cunha led the squad with a No. 5 listing, his fourth consecutive end of season top 10 ranking of his career. Redlicki closed his first campaign at Duke listed 38th, while Saba was the third Blue Devil to appear in the top 50 at No. 43. DUKE MAKES 23RD NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCE: u Duke was selected to the NCAA Team Championship field for the 22nd consecutive season and the 23rd time overall, receiving the No. 9 overall seed in the tournament. CUNHA WINS ARTHUR ASHE SPORTSMANSHIP AND LEADERSHIP NATIONAL AWARD: u Cunha became the second player in the program s history to earn the Arthur Ashe Sportmanship and Leadership National Award, joining current assistant coach Jonathan Stokke (2006) as the lone recipients of the award. The Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award is given annually to a player who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. DUKE TOTALS 25 WINS: u With their 25 wins on the season, Duke matched the 1999, 2000 and 2012 squads for the second-most wins in program history. The Blue Devils reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth consecutive season, while winning at least 22 matches for the third consecutive year in their lone regular season conference loss. BLUE DEVILS WIN NINE ACC MATCHES: u The Blue Devils notched a record of 9-1 in regular season ACC play during the season, reaching the nine-wins mark for just the fifth time in program history and the second straight season. That total matches the school record set by the 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2012 squads. The Blue Devils finished second in the ACC regular season standings, dropping a 4-3 decision at Virginia. CUNHA NAMED 2013 ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR: u A product of Jaú, Brazil, Cunha was named the 2013 ACC Player of the Year for the second time in his standout career at Duke. He became the first player in the program s history to be named ACC Player of the Year two times in his career, as he received the award as a freshman in In singles, Cunha was dominant throughout the regular season posting a perfect 17-0 ledger, including an undefeated 9-0 mark in ACC competition. Cunha was equally as dominant in doubles playing to a 33-3 overall record along with Raphael Hemmeler. 21
