CELEBRATING 12 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA Hickory Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2005 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Members and friends of ASGA, Well, folks, we certainly rose to the occasion during the month of July whether it be suffering through the heat/humidity/ thunderstorms on the golf courses, frolicking at pool parties, cookouts, & local pubs, attending multi-chapter/joint-chapter events, or relishing in the new friends & members that we have acquired. We did it all and quite well, I might add! On behalf of the Hickory ASGA members, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members (at the time of this writing) during the month of July Ann Burgin (Newton), Steve Ward (Hickory), Ron Williams (Morganton), and William Honeycutt (Morganton). We are very pleased to have you as a part of our group and encourage you to take advantage of our golf outings and/or socials both locally and regionally. We have also enjoyed our guests and new friends - Kim Welch, Matt Southers, Anne Spivey, Lori Holloway, and Kim Starnes and hope that all of you will seriously consider becoming members as well. Along that same line, my personal thanks goes to Bill Lautzenheiser (Membership Chairperson) and other Hickory ASGA members, who have brought prospective members to our attention. I am so excited about the networking that you have done! As a result, we have attained a record number of members, with many new acquaintances, who are interested in joining our chapter in golf and/or social capacities. Thanks for your hard work in promoting ASGA! I would like to congratulate the Wilmington Chapter for its success in hosting the NC/SC Challenge in Southern Pines. The package price, the courses, the amenities, the accommodations, the entertainment, the prize money, and mostly, the friends all combined to form a first-class event. Thanks to Tony Zitney, Teresa Helms, and the entire Wilmington Chapter for making this wonderful opportunity available to us. We had a blast! Please refer to your postcard of August events and phone or email the appropriate contact person to participate in any or all of the following: Nine & Dine on the 4 th, monthly meeting on the 11 th, jointchapters at Lincoln Country Club on the 13 th, invitation from UpState on the 20 th, Couples Tournament at Brushy Mtn. on the 21 st, board meeting/cookout on the 24 th, and additional Nine & Dine on the 25 th. If you re not havin fun, its your own fault, ha! I look forward to seeing all of you in August. Sincerely, Judy FOURTH of JULY SOCIAL Independence Day gave new meaning to the word BLAST when Hickory ASGA members/guests gathered for a pool party and cookout at Richard s house, Monday, July 4 th, at around 11:00 am. Also, as is July tradition, it was a sweltering day, with a forecast of thunderstorms; however, the rain showers were limited to the very early morning after which, folks NEXT MEETING: THURSDAY August 11th The Hickory Chapter of ASGA will hold its next monthly meeting on Thursday, August 11th, 2005, at the Oyster Bar/Ramada Inn on I-40 & Fairgrove Church Rd., at 6:30pm, with socializing beginning at 6:00pm. Ann Burgin Ron Williams July 4 th host, Richard, with Bill S., John, Larry, & Lib) Bathing beauties Peggy, Lib, Judy, Charlene, Donna, & Diane NINE & DINE in JULY Once again, the Nine & Dine golf event, which was slated for Thursday, July 7, 2005, at River Crest, was cancelled due to rain/storms/tornados, which were spurned by Tropical Storm Cindy. However, the cancellation of the nine did not interrupt the dine, as Hickory ASGA members/guests (Larry, Bill L., Brenda, Peggy, Gary, Charlene, Judy, and Ann) met after working hours at Backstreets for drinks and dinner. Also, a golf event (in lieu of the cancelled Nine & Dine) was scheduled for the following Sunday, July 10 th, at Orchard Hills, 1:45 pm, $25, ORCHARD HILLS Peggy scheduled a last minute golf outing (in lieu of the Nine & Dine cancellation) at Orchard Hills on Sunday July 10, 2005. Participating were eight ASGA members (Betty, Larry, Bill L. Terry Burke, Judy, John, Richard, & Diane) and three guests (Ron Williams, Ron s son Brian, & Judy s Dad, John). In a play your own ball, handicapped round, the net winners (in their particular divisions) were: Men 1 st place Terry with an 89/66; 2 nd place Bill L. with a 95/73; Women 1 st place Judy with an 89/64; 2 nd place Betty with a 103/78. After suffering through a particularly hot, torrid front nine, the group was able to cool off somewhat on the back nine later in the evening, with an overcast sky. Still, all agreed, it was time to take our showers! Brian Williams won the raffle. ASGA Hickory at Orchard Hills NINE & DINE REVISITED in JULY Hickory ASGA members/guests finally got to play their second Nine & Dine golf event of the summer (amidst threatening remnants of Hurricane Dennis). Prior to the game at 5:00 pm, the golf pro, Dave, gave free instructions on the proper grip of the golf club during the swing; then, participants practiced it on the driving range. Those attending from the Hickory Chapter were Betty, Dana, Charlene, Peggy, Brenda, Judy, Bill L., and Richard. 100 golfers enjoyed the amenities of the Residence Inn (complimentary buffet breakfast, hospitality room with complimentary beer/wine, accommodations with fully equipped kitchens/living areas, and a pool), the Mint Julep nightclub, the Deercroft Golf Club on Friday & Saturday (offering a delicious afternoon meal of BBQ/chicken on Saturday), the Whispering Woods Golf Club on Sunday, and prize money totaling $4,000! On Friday, Charlene landed just three (3) feet shy of Hole No. 16 at Deercroft, receiving her choice of a golf shirt in the pro shop for closest to the pin and Betty s foursome won 5 th place/$25 each. Taking home prize money from Saturday play at Deercroft were Peggy ($75/3 rd place) and Dana ($100/2 nd place) You go, girls! On Sunday, Betty s foursome won 4th place - temporarily - until the scorecards were revisited; and alas, she had to relinquish her earnings. A bummer there! Although it was a weary group of ASGA members, who traveled back to Hickory in the hot, humid weather on Sunday (stopping en route to grab a bite to eat) all agreed that the amenities, the prize money, and the camaraderie with old and new friends had been fabulous! Congratulations to the Charlotte Chapter, who was the winner of the challenge. The Raleigh Chapter will host the NC/SC Challenge in 2006. The Hickory Chapter wishes to express it thanks to Teresa Helms, Tony Zitney, and the entire Wilmington Chapter for hosting this event. They certainly know how to do it up right! Thanks again!
