November 21, 2009 9 a.m. SETTING THE SCENE The Huskies head south to the U.S. Naval Academy for the Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 21. This will be Bloomsburg s first visit back to the Classic since the 2007-08 season. That year the Huskies had three champions and seven total placewinners. Among the winners were Mike Sees, Dennis Bermudez and Matt Moley. The other placewinners were George Hickman, Rick Schmelyun, Jesse Hasseman, Nate DiStefano, Ian Moser, Mike Spaid and Jason Guffey. Action gets underway at 9 a.m. LAST MATCH The Huskies lost to in-state rival Penn State on Sunday by a score of 23-15. The Huskies held a 9-4 lead after three bouts on the strength of a win by fall from freshman Danny Gaylord and a win by decision from Frank Hickman. Later the Huskies took a 15-14 lead after back-to-back victories from Nate Graham and Derek Coffey. The Nittany Lions, ranked 15th in the country, pulled out the last two matches to earn the win. STUTZMAN ON THE HUSKIES MATCH WITH PSU I was pleased with most of the day, said Stutzman. I thought it was an awesome experience, however I feel as a program we need to learn to win those matches so we can elevate ourselves to the next level. In order for our team to win against great competition we need to fight for 7 minutes or 420 seconds. HUSKIES PROBABLE LINE-UP Wt. Name Yr. Rec. HEAD COACH JOHN STUTZMAN John Stutzman begins his fifth season as head coach of the Bloomsburg University wrestling team in 2009-10. Under his tutelage, he has produced 18 wrestlers who have qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships and produced an All-American in three consecutive years (the first time since 1985-89 that Bloomsburg has produced an All-American in at least three straight years), while recording 40 dual meet victories. He was named the 2007 EWL Coach of the Year, earned national recognition as a team, produced the 2007 EWL/PSAC Freshman of the Year as well as the 2009 EWL tournament s outstanding wrestler. Prior to becoming Bloomsburg University s head wrestling coach, he was an assistant coach for seven years at the Division I level. During those seven seasons, Stutzman worked at three very successful universities: the University at Buffalo, Northern Illinois University and Bloomsburg. Throughout that time, he assisted in the development and maturation of six conference champions, 22 Division I NCAA qualifiers, and two Division I All-Americans. He has recruited six classes that have been ranked in the top 25 nationally. In addition to his college coaching duties, Stutzman has coached with the New York Athletic Club at the 2004 and 2008 USA Olympic Freestyle Trials, as well as the 2006, 2007, and the 2009 World Team Trials. During this time, I coached five Three World Team Trials participants, Two Olympic Team Trials participants, and one USA National Team Member. He was also an assistant wrestling coach for the 2009 NWCA All-American tour in Seoul, South Korea. and was the assistant wrestling coach for Team USA for the University Team in Poland in 2009. DESSINO EARNS EWL AWARD Mike Dessino has been named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Wrestler of the Week for Nov. 11, 2009. Dessino, a freshman competing at 165 pounds, helped lead the Huskies to two dual meet wins against Boston University and Millersville. Against the Terriers Dessino posted a 7-4 win by decision over 2009 Colonial Athletic Association place winner Chris Inglin. Against Millersville he beat 2009 East Regional champion and NCAA qualifier Scott Brooks by a final score of 5-2. MOLEY AND SCHMELYUN RANKED IN PRE-SEASON Matt Moley and Rick Schmelyun are ranked nationally in the Intermat NCAA Division I preseason rankings for the 2009-10 season. Moley, a senior who wrestles at 157 pounds, is ranked second in the country at his weight by Intermat. He is a two-time All-American earning a sixth place finish last year as a junior after an eighth place finish as a sophomore. Moley was selected as one of the participants in the NWCA All-Star classic to be held in November in Fullerton, California. A year ago, Moley, who was ranked in the top 10 of his weight class all season long, led the Huskies with a record of 36-8, including a dual meet record of 12-1. Of his 36 wins, 21 (more than 58 percent) came by way of fall, technical fall or major decision. At the Eastern Wrestling League championships Moley captured his first EWL title with a win over his longtime rival from Edinboro who came into the event ranked number one in the country and undefeated. Moley earned an 8-5 win and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the event. He was also named the EWL Wrestler of the Week on Nov 30th. He will enter his senior year just two wins shy of 100 and just 28 wins shy of setting a new school record for career victories. Schmelyun is ranked 19th in the preseason poll by Intermat. Schmelyun, who wrestles at 165-pounds, posted a mark of 32-15 as junior and qualified for the NCAA championships for the first time in his career. He was one of the leaders in Division I lead for pins in his weight class with 15. Among his 15 pins were five in less than a minute, including one in 38 seconds. During the season Schmelyun finished fifth at the EWL championships and was second in the PSAC championships. For his career, he is 88-48. HUSKIES INVITED TO NWCA NATIONAL DUALS The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the 2010 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals will be presented by Hibiclens. The two day tournament will be held January 9-10, 2010, at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Bloomsburg University wrestling team is one of 16 Division I teams that has been invited to the event. This is a great honor for our wrestling program, said Bloomsburg head coach John Stutzman. I am excited for the student-athletes as our program continues to grow. It really does show that you can compete at a high-level here at Bloomsburg. Still, we are not where we want to be, but we are making strides to achieving our team and individual goals. At 133 pounds freshman Danny Gaylord trailed by a score of 10-5 in the third period of his match with Bryan Pearsall of Penn State. Gaylord though soon turned the match around with a quick takedown, then put Pearsall on his back and earned the win by fall in 5:28. At 141 pounds Frank Hickman got behind by a 6-0 score, but the red-shirt freshman picked up five takedowns and had two, three-point near falls to post a 19-12 victory and give Bloomsburg a 9-4 lead in the match. #15 Penn State 23, Bloomsburg 15 125- #8 Brad Pataky (PSU) won by tech fall over Jason Guffey (BU), 22-7, 7:00 133- Danny Gaylord (BU) won by fall over Bryan Pearsall (PSU), 5:28 141- Frank Hickman (BU) dec. Bloomsburg head coach John Stutzman is thrilled for Moley. It s a great honor to wrestle in this event, said Stutzman. This is great for the Bloomsburg, our team and for Matt who has worked extremely hard and it is a honor that is well deserved. Moley will be the seventh wrestler from Bloomsburg to participate in the NWCA All-Star Classic. Ron Russo was the first Bloomsburg selection in the 1969 event and posted an 11-5 win over Len Groom of Northern Colorado. In 1974 the late Shorty Hitchcock lost his bout 5-3 to Mel Renfro of Washington State, while in 1981 Don Reese tied Jim Gibbons of Iowa State 6-6. In 1985 the Huskies had both Ricky and Rocky Bonomo take part in the Classic. Ricky lost 7-1 to Mark Perry of Oklahoma State with Rocky falling to Barry Davis of Iowa, 20-9. In 1989 Dave Morgan was the last Bloomsburg wrestler to take part in the event losing to Joe Pantaleo of Michigan, 6-1. The NWCA All-Star Classic is an All-Star wrestling dual pitting the top collegiate wrestlers in the nation against each other in a showcase that is often a preview of the NCAA Division I Championships. The event will include 10 collegiate weight classes along with several local feature bouts involving college wrestlers. This year s event will be held at Cal State Fullerton s Titan Gym.
