FISH BITES The Marlins are looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Brewers in the finale of this three-game series today at 2:10 p.m. EDT. Miami looks to right-hander Dan Straily (5-4, 3.44) to halt its four-game losing streak, which is the Club's longest skid since losing five straight from May 15-19. Straily is 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA in five career appearances (four starts) against Milwaukee. Opposing him will be right-hander Junior Guerra (1-2, 4.54), who is making his first career appearance against the Fish. Miami is 0-2 on this 10-game, three-city road trip that will also see them visit St. Louis (July 3-6) and San Francisco (July 7-9) before the All-Star break. The Marlins are coming off a 5-5 homestand against Washington (2-1), the Cubs (2-2), and the Mets (1-2). YESTERDAY VS. MILWAUKEE A big second inning for the Brewers doomed Miami to an 8-4 loss yesterday afternoon at Miller Park. Miami jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich drew one-out walks, and then came around to score on a two-out double by Justin Bour. The Brewers went down in order in the first, and the Marlins followed suit in the second, before Milwaukee broke the game open. Starter Tom Koehler was touched for seven runs (three earned) on six hits in the frame. Miami got two back in the third on an RBI single by Marcell Ozuna and an RBI double by Martín Prado, but the Brew Crew never looked back after their outburst. The seven runs allowed by Miami in the second inning fell one short of a season high, which the Pirates accomplished on April 28 in Miami, when they scored eight runs in the second inning of a 12-2 win. AGAINST THE BREWERS Miami has gone 6-4 over its last 10 meetings with the Brewers, who lead the all-time series by a slim margin at 69-67 tie. The Fish are 29-37 all-time in Milwaukee, with a 26-31 record at Miller Park, where they have gone 4-4 since 2015. SWEEP INFO The Brewers are going for a three-game sweep of the Marlins today when the clubs' face off in the finale of this series. The last time the Marlins were swept by the Brewers was also in a three-game set at Miller Park, from July 19-21, 2013. Milwaukee is going for its ninth sweep of the Marlins in a series of at least two games since the all-time series began in 1998. In that time, the Brewers have swept Miami four times in Milwaukee (three at Miller Park). Five of the sweeps have been three-game sets, two have been four-game sets, and one was a two-game set. Only Cincinnati (11), San Francisco (9), and Tampa Bay (9) have swept Miami more often since 1998, while Pittsburgh also has eight sweeps. - Stats LLC UP NEXT Folllowing today's game the Marlins will travel to St. Louis for a four-day holiday set against the Cardinals. Miami enters the series looking to snap a three-game losing streak against the Redbirds, and have dropped six of the last nine meetings. The Fish have won three of their last four games at Busch Stadium, however. The Cardinals lead the all-time series, 109-73, and are 51-39 when defending their home field against Miami (19-14 at current Busch Stadium). MIXING UP THE BREW CREW All four of Dan Straily's career starts against the Brewers came in 2016 as a member of the Reds. Straily excelled, turning out a 3-0 record and 1.67 ERA. Only Adam Wainwright (0.82 in three starts) and Carlos Martinez (1.38 in four starts) had a better ERA against the Brewers last season (min. 0.1 IP per team game). He picked up a win in each of his last three starts against them, posting a 2.25 ERA (20.0/5) during the streak, with 19 strikeouts and three walks. NOT SETTING THE TABLE The Marlins have gone 5-9 since June 17. Since that date, they have batted.284 with runners in scoring position, the fourth-best mark in the National League behind San Francisco (.309), Atlanta (.296), and Washington (.285). However, the Fish have had the fewest at-bats with RISP in the NL over that same span, going 23x81. Philadelphia (90) has the next fewest at-bats with RISP, while Arizona leads the Senior Circuit with 144. Miami is 12th in the NL in runs scored (49) since June 17, and has had 10-plus at-bats with RISP just twice in 14 games; in the 13 previous games (June 2-16), when the Club went 9-4, it had nine such games, with 132 at-bats overall and 75 runs scored. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY Marcell Ozuna is batting just.255 in 15 career games at Miller Park, with 14 hits in 55 at-bats. However, eight of those 14 hits have gone for extra-bases, including seven home runs. According to Stats LLC, he has an at-bat/home run rate of 7.86 at Miller Park, the fourth-best mark (min. 50 plate appearances) in the venue's history, behind only Wily Mo Pena (6.00), Shawn Green (6.91), and Michael Morse (7.67). Ozuna's power surge in Milwaukee is highlighted by a streak of four straight games with a homer from September 8-11, 2014. At the time he was just the seventh Marlin to homer in four consecutive games, tying the club record; Justin Bour has since added his name to that list, doing so from June 30-July 3, 2015. BRIGHTER DAYS The Marlins were just 8-20 in Milwaukee from 2011-2014, but have bounced back with an 8-6 record since the start of 2015. In that time, the clubs have taken different approaches to their victories, as Miami has scratched out its eight wins by an average margin of 2.6 runs per game, while the Brewers' six wins have come by a margin of 5.2 runs. Milwaukee has out-scored the Marlins at Miller Park since 2015 by a count of 77-67. - Stats LLC EIGHT IS GREAT MIAMI MARLINS (35-44) RHP DAN STRAILY (5-4, 3.44) at MILWAUKEE BREWERS (44-39) RHP JUNIOR GUERRA (1-2, 4.54) MILLER PARK, MILWAUKEE, WI SUNDAY, JULY 2, 2017 2:10 P.M. He is 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA (28.0 ip/5 er) in five career appearances (four starts) against the Brewers. All four starts came last season as a member of the Reds, and the relief appearance came in 2014 with the Cubs. Was 3-0, 1.67 in four start against Milwaukee in 2016. Only Adam Wainwright (0.82 in three starts) and Carlos Martinez (1.38 in four starts) had a better ERA against the Brewers last season (min. 0.1 IP per team game). Has earned the win in three consecutive starts against the Brewers. Has a 2.25 ERA (20.0/5) during the streak, with 19 strikeouts and three walks. Has a 2-0 record and 2.08 ERA (13.0/3) in three career appearances in Milwaukee, including two starts (2-0, 2.25). Over his last three starts, has combined to go 1-0 with a 1.56 ERA (17.1 ip/3 er), allowing just two walks while striking out 18. Went 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA (15.1/11) in first three starts on the road this season. Over his last four, he has gone 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA (23.0/10). Meanwhile, has a 2.31 ERA (50.2/13) in nine starts at home, which leads all National League starts with at least nine home starts, ahead of Jimmy Nelson (2.64). In his start on June 16 at Atlanta, he struck out eight without walking a batter. He is the only Marlins pitcher to accomplish that feat this season, doing it twice (also, April 22 at San Diego). He is also the first Marlins pitcher to have eight-plus strikeouts and no walks more than once in a season since José Fernández did it four times last year. Only five pitchers (six times) have done it three-or-more times in a season: Anibal Sanchez (4 in 2011), Fernández (4 in 2016; 3 in 2014), Kevin Brown (4 in 1996), Javier Vazquez (3 in 2011), and Ricky Nolasco (3 in 2008). Over his last 10 starts, since May 9, he is 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA (58.0/18). Since that date, his ERA ranks fourth among National League starters (min. 10 GS), behind Max Scherzer (1.73), Clayton Kershaw (2.26), and Jimmy Nelson (2.76). Has held opponents to a.214 (70x327) batting average this season, which ranks seventh among National League starters. He ranks eighth among NL starters in hits allowed per 9.0 innings (7.08). In his start on May 31 vs. Philadelphia, tossed 113 pitches over 6.2 innings, 81 of which were strikes. It was the highest strike count of his career, and his best strike percentage (71.7) in his 23 career games with 100-plus pitches. In his start on May 26 vs. the Angels, allowed a run in the first inning for first time this season. Has a 2.06 ERA (48.0/11) in innings 1-3 this season, but a 5.35 (37.0/22) mark in innings 4-6. Was forced to leave start vs. Houston on May 15 for precautionary reasons after being struck on the right forearm by a line drive off the bat of Evan Gattis leading off the fifth inning. Remained in the game to retire the side and dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the frame before departing.
