Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi is starting for Miami, and will be making his fifth career Interleague start and first career start against the Tigers. Detroit counters with right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who is making his 17 th career Interleauge start and first against his former team. Miami entered its season-ending homestand fresh off its final road trip of the season (3-8), a stretch of 11 games in 10 days that saw the Club visit the Mets (1-3), the Phillies (1-2) and the Nationals (1-3), and split doubleheaders in New York and Washington. Looking ahead to Opening Day 2014, Miami will take on the Colorado Rockies at Marlins Park on Monday, March 31. LAST NIGHT For the second consecutive night, the Marlins walked away from Marlins Park with a 3-2 win. The entirety of Miami s scoring came in the Overall record on this date: 8-9 third inning, as Giancarlo Stanton stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded and promptly delivered a bases-clearing double. Detroit scored the first of its two runs in the fifth, and moved to within a run in the sixth. Tom Koehler earned his fifth win of the season, giving up two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Steve Cishek converted his 29 th straight save and 34 th of the season. VS. THE TIGERS This series marks just the fourth all-time between the two squads, and first since the Marlins dropped two of three in Motown from June 11-13, 2004. Miami leads the all-time series, 6-4, which includes a 3-1 record in South Florida. INTERLEAGUE NOTES Miami has a 7-11 record in Interleague Play this season, having won six of its last nine games following a sevengame slide. Last season, the Fish went just 5-13 against the AL. Despite going 27-42 in Interleague Play since 2010, Miami owns the second-most all-time Interleague wins (147) among National League teams, trailing Atlanta (148). The Marlins have the fourth-best winning percentage among NL teams at.510 (147-141), trailing Atlanta (.530; 148-131), St. Louis (.529; 135-120) and the Mets (.518; 146-136). The Fish lead all NL clubs in hit (2,559), runs scored (1,334), RBI (1,263) and doubles (538), and rank second in triples (57) and walks (898). The pitching staff leads all NL Clubs in complete games (tied with Arizona-18), ranks second in saves (75), has allowed the third-fewest home runs (254), ranks third in innings pitched (2570.1) and strikeouts (1,911) and is fourth in ERA (4.25). FEASTING ON THE AMERICAN LEAGUE Logan Morrison has posted a.429 average (15x35) in Interleague Play this season, recording at least one hit in each of the nine games he has played. He owns the second-highest batting average in Interleague Play this season (min. 38 PA), behind the Cardinals Allen Craig (.452). Going back to last season, Morrison has hit in 10 straight games against American League opponents, batting.421 (16x38) over that span. He is tied with Joe Mauer and J.B. Shuck for the second-longest active Interleague hitting streak, behind Jose Altuve s 12. - STATS LLC MAKING THE BEST OF HIS OPPORTUNITIES Steve Cishek on Wednesday established a new Club record for consecutive saves, nailing down his 28 th straight opportunity. He moved past the previous record holder, Todd Jones, who saved 27 straight games in 2005. He has recorded one save since, and his 29 consecutive saves marks the longest active streak in the Majors, ahead of Huston Street (25). His ERA since his save streak began on June 8 is 1.21, which ranks fifth among NL relievers (min. 35.0 IP), behind Kevin Siegrist (0.49), Craig Kimbrel (0.84), Tony Watson (1.07) and Luis Avilan (1.13). Cishek is the third closer this season to record a consecutive save streak of 28-games-or-longer, following Craig Kimbrel s 37-game streak from May 9-September 14 and Greg Holland s 31-game stretch from May 30-September 3. The three streaks of 28+ consecutive saves is equal to that of the previous two seasons combined, when Joe Nathan had 31 in 2012 and Jose Valverde and John Axford had 49 and 43, respectively, in 2011. - STATS LLC THE GOLD STANDARD If the 2013 season is the last of Placido Polanco s 17-year career, he is making a strong case to go out with the gold. In 92 starts (109 games), Polanco leads all qualifying Major League third basemen with a.990 fielding percentage (2 E/207 TC). He previously took home Rawlings National League Gold Glove awards in 2011 (third base) and 2009 (second base), as well as an American League Gold Glove award in 2007 (second base). He is one of just two players in Major League history to earn the award at multiple positions (Darin Erstad). ROAD RECORD DOESN T TELL THE STORY THIS DATE IN MARLINS HISTORY September 28 In the Marlins shutout win over the Mets (4-0) in 2003, Juan Pierre stole his 65 th base of the season. The 65 stolen bases is a singleseason Franchise record. Dontrelle Willis was the starting pitcher for Florida, and he picked up his 14 th win of the season, holding the Mets to three hits over 5.0 innings. The staff also posted the lowest opponents average and road ERA of any non strike-shortened season with marks of.251 and 3.87, respectively, while tossing the second-most innings (714.0) in any season, behind 736.2 in 2011. MARLINS STARTING PITCHER 2013: 4-6, 3.50 CAREER: 9-21, 3.89 Height: 6-2 Weight: 215 NATHAN EOVALDI Bats: Right Throws: Right RHP Acquired: From Dodgers with RHP Scott McGough in exchange for LHP Randy Choate and INF Hanley Ramirez on July 25, 2012. Eovaldi will make his final start of the season tonight as the Marlins meet the Tigers in the middle game of this three-game set. He is coming off a strong outing on September 23 against the Phillies. He tossed 7.2 shutout innings and allowed just three hits and two walks, while striking out five, earning the win in a 4-0 victory. Is 0-2 in four career Interleague starts despite posting a 1.80 ERA (25.0 IP/5 ER). He has tossed at least 6.0 innings in all of those starts, and allowed more than one run in just one of the outings. He has received just two runs of support over the four games. Opened the season by going at least 6.0 innings in nine of his first 10 starts; went 2-2 with a 2.82 ERA (60.2/19) in that time. However, has not reached that mark in three of his last seven starts, including a pair of 3.0 inning outings. He is 2-4, 4.54 (39.2/20) over that span, with a.293 batting average against. His run support per 9.0 innings average of 3.14 is third-lowest in the Majors this season (min. 17 GS). Since entering the league in 2011, his average is just 2.90, the lowest in the Majors for any pitcher with at least 45 starts. He went 3-0 with a 3.65 ERA (24.2 IP/10 ER) in six Spring Training starts for Miami before being derailed by right shoulder inflammation and placed on 15-day DL on March 31 (transferred to 60-day on April 18). Eovaldi made five rehab appearances prior to his reinstatement. He went 0-1, 3.00 (9.0 IP/3 ER) in two starts for Single-A Jupiter, with two walks and six strikeouts (one home run allowed).
