FISH BITES The Marlins open a seven-game homestand tonight with the first of four against the Phillies at 7:10 p.m. Right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne (0-1, 3.70) will get the start for Miami; he is 0-0, 8.44 in three career relief appearances against the Phillies. Philadelphia will call on right-hander Ben Lively (1-5, 4.36), who is making his first career appearance against the Fish. Miami is coming off a three-game road trip to Washington (0-3), which followed a three-game homestand against San Diego (3-0). After this series, the Nationals come to Miami for a three-game set from Sept. 4-6. YESTERDAY AT WASHINGTON Stephen Strasburg tossed a shutout to complete a three-game sweep of the Marlins at Nationals Park with a 4-0 victory. J.T. Realmuto snapped a 0x17 slump with a 3x4 day, falling a home run short of the cycle. Dee Gordon also had a multihit game (2x4), but the Fish were 0x6 with runners in scoring position, 1x22 on the series. Adam Conley started and turned in a strong effort for Miami, allowing just two runs on seven hits (two home runs) over 6.0 innings. VS. THE PHILLIES The Marlins took three of four from the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park last week, taking a 7-5 lead in the season series. Philadelphia has a 223-186 lead in the all-time series, but Miami has a 106-98 advantage in South Florida, including a 28-24 lead at Marlins Park. HOME SWEET HOME The Marlins, who were swept in Washington to open this week, return home tonight, where they have excelled of late. Miami is 10-1 (.909) at home in August, currently the best single-month home record in Club history, ahead of a 9-1 mark in June of 2006. A win tonight would clinch a new Club record, and would also clinch the best home record in a calendar month by any team in the Majors this season, besting the Dodgers' 14-2 (.875) mark in July. - Stats LLC SUMMER SURGE The Marlins are 49-36 (.576) since May 28, tied with Boston for the fourth-best record in the Majors since that date, trailing only the Dodgers (.753/61-20), Cleveland (.612/52-33), and Washington (.607/51-33). The Marlins enter play today 5.5 games behind Colorado for the second NL Wild Card berth. Miami is 13-6 since August 11, tied with the Cubs and Washington for the best record in the National League, trailing only Cleveland (16-4) in the Majors, according to Stats LLC. RECORDS ON THE (DEAD)LINE With September 1 looming tomorrow, several notable marks are on the line tonight for Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton, as well as Marcell Ozuna. Stanton currently has 18 home runs in August, tied with Rudy York (1937) for the most in August in MLB history. Stanton and York are tied for the second-most homers in any month in MLB history, trailing Sammy Sosa's 20 in June of 1998. Also, Stanton has 30 home runs since July 1, one behind Albert Belle (31 in Aug./Sept. 1995) for the MLB record for consecutive months. Also, Stanton (51) and Ozuna (31) have combined for 82 homers this season. That is the seventh-most before September by a pair of teammates in MLB history. They have a chance to move up that list tonight, as the sixth-highest total was 84, by Babe Ruth (43) and Lou Gehrig (41) in 1927. The most ever was 99 by Roger Maris (51) and Mickey Mantle (48) in 1961, followed by: Sammy Sosa (55) and Henry Rodriguez (31) with 86 in 1998; Barry Bonds (57) and Rich Aurilia (29) with 86 in 2001; Alex Rodriguez (48) and Rafael Palmeiro (38) with 86 in 2002; Ken Griffey Jr. (47) and Alex Rodriguez (38) with 85 in 1998); and Ruth/Gehrig in 1927. - Stats LLC ELIAS SAYS record on this date: 7-15 Giancarlo Stanton hit his 51st home run of the season Tuesday night, increasing his MLB lead to 14 homers over Aaron Judge. That gap continued entering play today. Only two other players led the Majors by as many as 14 home runs at any point in any season since 1876. Babe Ruth did it in seven different seasons (1919 21, 1924, and 1926 28). His lead of 36 homers over runner-up George Sisler late in the 1920 season was the largest such margin ever. The other player to hold a lead of 14 homers was Jimmie Foxx, who finished the 1932 and 1933 seasons with leads of 17 and 14, respectively; Ruth ranked second in both of those seasons. TWO DOZEN Giancarlo Stanton is the first player in the Majors to hit 12-plus home runs in back-to-back months in 15 years, and just the 15th player (17th time) to ever accomplish that feat. The last player to do so before Stanton was Alex Rodriguez in 2002 (12 in July & Aug.), when he finished with 57 home runs. Only three players have ever homered 12+ times in three consecutive months: Babe Ruth in 1920 (May-12, June-12, July-13; finished with 54); Jimmie Foxx in 1932 (May-13, June-12, July-12; 58); and Mark McGwire in 1999 (July-16, Aug.-12, Sept.-12; 65). - Stats LLC PUTTING IT TO BED Since returning from the disabled list (right back strain) on July 29 and taking over the closer's role, Brad Ziegler has flipped the script on his season. Prior to his DL stint, he was 1-2 with a 6.52 ERA (29.0 ip/21 er) in 34 appearances, and 0x2 in save chances. Since his return, Ziegler has tossed 12.0 scoreless innings across 12 appearances, and has converted all nine save opportunities. His scoreless innings streak is the fifth-longest active streak in the National League, behind leader Stephen Strasburg (20.0); it is the longest active streak among Miami pitchers, and tied with Vance Worley (July 28-Aug. 8) for the third-longest streak of the season, behind Edinson Volquez (16.0 from June 3-8) and Dustin McGowan (13.1 from May 30-June 20). IN A PINCH Ichiro Suzuki had a pinch-hit single Tuesday night, giving him his 23rd pinch hit of the season, extending his single-season Club record. Suzuki leads the Majors in pinch hits this year, ahead of Pat Valaika (15). He is five pinch-hits behind John Vander Wal (28 in 1995) for the MLB single-season record. Suzuki is also second in Club history in career pinch hits (47), trailing Wes Helms (56).
