CELEBRATING 13 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA Hickory Chapter - American Singles Golf Association February 2006 Winter doldrums? Not if you are participating in our chapter s activities. What a wild and wonderful start to the New Year - the Hollifield Holiday adventure; the January 8 th Panthers playoff action and social at my house; the golf at Lakewood and more Panther success on Sunday, the 15 th ; the numerous impromptu golf outings in unusually good weather; the freezing weather for golf at River Crest on the 22 nd ; and the not-so-good Panther performance on the same day. And let s not overlook the January 12 th record-setting monthly meeting at the Oyster Bar with 27 members and guests! Compare that to last year s January meeting where we had a total of 10 members/guests present. We have twice as many members as ever before with a constantly expanding list of prospects. Still, this is no time to relax our recruiting. There are literally hundreds of quali- fied singles out there that would love to join our group, to enjoy all we offer as we share in what they bring to the table. It s up to each one of us to reach as many of them as possible and encourage them to join us in one or more of our events. Once exposed to the Hickory group, most new-comers quickly become members. Truly, with your help, the sky s the limit! - - Bill Lautzenheiser Golf allows us to build and transform personal character. Out of the surge of competitive spirit rise the gamut of our highest and lowest instincts. It is such a naked occupation. We are exposed far beyond the limits we normally allow. The lighter and darker sides of our persona or being may be exhibited within a single hole Tom Stewart Board Meeting Late December The Board of Directors of the Hickory Chapter of ASGA convened on December 28, 2005, at the Round Wheels Lounge/Holiday Inn Select in Hickory at 6:00 pm. In attendance were board members Judy, Bill L., and Peggy; ensuing board members Betty, Larry, and Claudetta; and member-at-large Mike. Foremost on the agenda was the approval of the proposed 2006 Calendar of Events. In addition, members discussed the importance of sharing updated, accurate information in a timely and consistent manner. Upcoming January events, which were reviewed by the board members, included the following: Card Social at Bill L. s on the 8 th ; Saturday golf at Lakewood on the 14 th ; and Sunday golf at River Crest on the 22 nd. Hollifield Gold Holiday Hickory ASGA member, Larry Hollifield, hosted a non-asga New Year s golf outing at Myrtle Beach on December 30, 2005, through January 2, 2006. The weekend began on Friday evening with delicious seafood at Bimini s, followed by dancing at the 2001 Nightclub to the sounds of the legendary Fantastic Shakers. On Saturday, the golfers assembled at The Witch Golf Links at 9:00 am and played an 18-hole Captain s Choice round in beautiful, 65-degree weather. Taking home honors with a (one over par) score of 72 was the team of Claudetta, Kim, and Bill. Peggy won a closest to the pin on a Par 3 prize. Afterward, the group enjoyed a late lunch at the Hard Rock Café at Broadway. They arrived back at their condos just in time to dress for the evening, which began by visiting 88 s a popular piano bar located at Rossi s Italian Restaurant - and ended by bringing in the New Year at the 2001 Nightclub with band, Coco Loco. Some indulged in late breakfasts. On Sunday (another picture-perfect day), a Captain s Choice Stableford round was played on-site at Myrtlewood s Pine Hills Course. The first place team (with a +15 and score of 71 ) was Judy Crago, Reggie, and Bill. Winning closest to the pin on Par 3 s in the male and female divisions were Ron and Peggy, respectively. Again, the group met up for a late lunch this time at another famous spot, Hamburger Joe s. Although a few people were scheduled for golf on Monday, rainy weather prevailed, and everyone decided to return home early. Thanks to Larry for the scheduling, coordination, and execution of the weekend package. It was a blast well worth considering again next year! Wildcards and Wild Cards Hickory ASGA members/guests began gathering at game time on Sunday, January 8, 2006, at Bill L. s home on Lake Hickory for some football and card games. Twenty-two (22) people participated in the social, as follows: Hickory members (Ron, Richard, Peggy, Mike, Priscilla, Lib, Larry, Claudetta, Charlene, Diane, Brenda, Betty, Ann B., Bill L., & Judy), other chapter members (Kathie Alonso/Asheville, Terry Burke/Asheville, Diane Gaskin/UpState SC, & Fran Yukish/Upstate SC), and guests (Effie White, Gail Hand, and Donna Walton). Football set the pace for the afternoon as the Carolina Panthers stunned the New York Giants at Giants Stadium in an NFC wildcard playoff game with a sweeping 23-0 victory. Panther fans were spellbound as they watched the Cool Cats intercept three (3) NY passes and hold the Giants to more than 35 yards from their field goal for the entire day. Amid the sports revelry, participants enjoyed their favorite drinks along with an array of tasty snacks meat/cheese cold cut sandwiches, shrimp, BBQ d frankfurters, Mexican bean dip, pizza, chips, nuts, and dessert pastries. Guests also enjoyed the electronic slide show (of the year s ASGA events) that was displayed on Bill s computer all afternoon. some wild card games of their own poker and Rook as the evening progressed. Nobody in this golf group is shy when faced with a bit of competition. Thanks to Bill L. for hosting the Sunday social as well as to all those who attended and/or brought goodies. The Hickory Chapter extends a special invitation to our out-of-town ASGAer s to come back and visit with us again soon both on and off the golf course! Richard, Diane (Upstate), Mike, Terry (Asheville), Judy, and host, Bill L. January Meeting It was another record-breaking event as twenty-seven (27) members/guests attended the Hickory Chapter s regularly scheduled monthly ASGA meeting on Thursday, January 12, 2005, at the Oyster Bar/Ramada Inn at 6:30 pm, with Bill Lautzenheiser presiding. Those present were members Ann B., Bill L., Ann D., Judy, Gary, Brenda, Diane, Kim, Larry, Bill S., Richard, Lib, Anne S., Peggy, Dana, Claudetta, Betty, Mike, Priscilla, & Sharon Robinson (Asheville Chapter) and guests Darnell Setzer, Robert Waldrup, Reggie Sipe, Steve Canipe, Donna Walton, Sandra Creech, and Barbara Barnes. On behalf of the membership, he presented Past President, Judy Elmore, with a commemorative plaque and photo album. Treasurer Beginning balance $633.50 Dana reported $97 in deposits, $363.20 in withdrawals, and an ending balance of $459.30. Membership Betty announced that we have 32 members (with Mike Roane having joined in late December) and approximately 13 active prospects. Reggie Sipe will join this month. Updated fliers, marketing materials, and calling cards are available upon request. Communications/Newsletter Judy will send a photo of Hickory ASGA Saturday golf winners to local news media sports sections each month. Also, she will begin an Editorial section in the newsletter for anyone, who is interested in making comments. Golf Peggy and Larry finalized the plans for Saturday s outing at Lakewood, reminded everyone of the Sunday, 22 nd outing at River Crest, distributed a signup sheet for hosting Saturday golf monthly, announced the Upstate SC (Pebble Creek, 21 st ) and Asheville (Links O Tryon, 28 th ) outings, reviewed the upcoming multi-chapter events, and distributed updated handicaps. Socials Claudetta reserved tables at the Oyster Bar for the Sunday, 15 th, Panthers/ Bears playoff game at 4:30 pm. The winner of the half-the-pot ticket raffle was Robert Waldrup, who earned $33. After drinks and dinner, all enjoyed dancing to the music/entertainment of Mike Caldwell and Debbie Mitchum. Some of the many members/guests at the record setting January meeting. Past President Honored Judy Elmore, Past President of the Hickory ASGA, was honored by its members at their regular January meeting. On behalf of the Chapter, President Bill Lautzenheiser presented her with an engraved plaque a portion of which read with our sincere gratitude for all that you have done, for all that you continue to do. She also received a photo album with more than 200 pictures of the past year s outings. Judy thanked everyone for the recognition. Currently, Judy serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Hickory Chapter (per ASGA bylaws) and is the Communications Chairperson. She is beginning her third year as editor of the monthly newsletter and continues to remain active in recruiting efforts. Secretary Appointed The Hickory Chapter of ASGA is delighted that Ann Burgin has volunteered as our Secretary for the year, 2006. The Secretary is an appointed position, rather than an elected position; and, for the first time in the history of the Hickory ASGA all of the offices are filled! Thanks, Ann, for lending your time and talents to our organization. You will be a

great asset. Members-at-large may be appointed at any time throughout the year by Committee Chairpersons for various tasks, as necessary. Please feel free to volunteer! January Golf & Social Golf Whether a stroke of genius, an accurate weather forecast, or both - it was a great move on the part of the Golf Co-Chairs, Peggy and Larry, to reschedule the Saturday, January 14, 2006, golf outing at Lakewood Golf Club in Statesville on Sunday, the 15 th and promptly notify all of the membership. As a result of quick thinking, the golfers enjoyed a calm, sunny day rather than a bitterly cold, windy one. Participating in the ASGA handicapped Captain s Choice round were Hickory members (Peggy, Richard, Brenda, Bill L., Claudetta, Tom, Diane, Larry, Betty, Ron, & Judy), Asheville member (Terry Burke), and UpState SC member (Ray Overstreet). Winners, with a 60 were Brenda, Diane, Terry, and Larry. The 2 nd place team (Ron, Judy, and Tom) finished with a 61. Taking home Par 3 prizes were Diane, Tom, Judy, and Richard. Our thanks go to Larry and Peggy for coordinating the outing. Judy, Richard, Brenda, Ron, Claudetta, Betty, Diane, Tom, Terry (Asheville), Larry, Peggy, and Bill L. Photo by Ray Overstreet (Upstate) Social As if a beautiful afternoon of competitive golf were not enough, the revelry continued as golfers met together at the Oyster Bar for the 4:30 pm NFC playoff between the Carolina Panthers and the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. Excitement began early as the Cardiac Cats (58 yrd. Delhomme pass to Smith) scored on the 2 nd play of the game and never looked back to soundly defeat the Bears in a 29-21 victory. What a day fun, fellowship, fairways, AND football. Thanks to Claudetta for scheduling the social. Bill L., Richard, Peggy, Ray (Upstate), Judy, Ron, Priscilla, Diane January Golf at River Crest The forecast of cold and rainy proved to be just that on Sunday, January 22, 2006, as the original fourteen (14) ASGA golfers scheduled to play River Crest was trimmed to seven (7). Mike, Charlie, and guest Larry Hefner - dropped out at the turn, leaving Richard, Ron, Bill L., and Larry to brave the decreasing temperature and increasing rain. When the handicapped shamble was complete, Ron came out on top with a score of 85/62 and Richard placed second with a 93/63. Richard and Bill L. won closest to Par 3 pin prizes. No doubt, it was the coldest round played this year! Bravo! Larry Hefner (guest), Mike, Larry, Ron, Bill L., Richard, Charlie Richard (2 nd place & closest to pin), Bill L. (closest to pin), Ron (1 st place) January Board Meeting Officers of the Hickory Chapter of ASGA (Bill L., Betty, Judy, Peggy, Larry, Ann B., Dana, and Claudetta) attended the Board of Director s monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at the Round Wheels Lounge/Holiday Inn Select at 6:00 pm. Foremost on the agenda was the discussion of a change of venue for the regular monthly meeting due to the increase in attendance, noise, etc. (After the meeting Bill checked with the Dana at the Oyster Bar, who approved the use of an amplifier prior to their 8:00 pm entertainment.) Betty reported that we now have 33 members; Dana gave a financial update; Peggy/Larry announced the upcoming golf activities (Sat., Feb. 11 th, at Orchard Hills/Rock-Ola Grille and Sun., Feb. 29 th at NC National); Larry will retrieve the handicap software and assume that responsibility; Ann B. will investigate the printing of generic Hickory ASGA greeting cards & will make newsletter roster additions/corrections; and Claudetta will coordinate a Ladies Night (dinner & play) on Feb. 10 th and a post- Valentine s Day group outing at the Zodiac Club on Feb 17 th. Bill distributed updated 2006 calendars, shared new website information. Optional January Outings Hampton Heights Eight (8) golfers enjoyed an impromptu outing at Hampton Heights on Friday, January 11, 2006, in an ASGA handicapped Captain s Choice round of golf that began in rather foggy conditions. The team of Betty, Richard, Mike, and Bill L. defeated the team of Diane, Terry, Bill S., and Don Willis with scores of 66/53.6 and 68/56.4, respectively. Six (6) of the

competitors then retired to Backstreets for a late lunch. Mike, Terry (Asheville), Bill S., Diane, Betty, Bill L., Richard, Don Willis Catawba Springs Priscilla, Betty, and Ron joined Bill L. for a guest day at the Lake Hickory Country Club Catawba Springs course on Monday, January 16, 2005, in a two-person shamble format. Bill and Priscilla managed to eke out a win by the end of the 17 th hole when the day became progressively colder and darker. Thanks to Bill for the invites! Godfrey s Gatherings It is fairly common to see numerous ASGA members gather at Godfrey s on Wednesday nights and Friday or Saturday nights. Godfrey s has started to bring in live bands on the weekend, often playing to a standing room only crowd. Check with them at 322-9111 to see who s playing. And expect to see fellow ASGA club members there. New Members/Prospects The Hickory Chapter of ASGA bids a sincere welcome to both Mike Roane and Clarence Owen, who are our newest ASGA members. Mike joined in late December, attended the New Years outing in Myrtle Beach, and is well into the swing of things. Clarence joined in January (after reading an ASGA news release in a local publication) and although he has not joined us at a function yet, we look forward to his participation. Congratulations, to both of you! Others prospective members last month include the following: Reggie Sipe, Larry Hefner, Gail Hand, Effie White, Steve Canipe, Darnell Setzer, Mike Heekin, Donna Walton, Barbara Barnes, Loyd Fox, and Sandra Creech. All of you - please feel free to join us any time at meetings, golf, and/or socials and we certainly encourage your membership. As we members can attest, ASGA has a tremendous impact on all of the lives that it touches! Welcome, Mike! Reminders! Non-ASGA golf scorecards should be turned in to Golf Co-Chairpersons (Peggy or Larry) in order to establish accurate handicaps at peggy.laughridge@carpenter.com (828) 322-7982 or lokman2868@yahoo.com (828) 632-3218. Also, if in doubt of golf play due to inclement weather, please phone the golf club, whose number is listed on the monthly postcard and newsletter. The golf host for the month is responsible for contacting the club when golf resumes or is cancelled/postponed. Rock Barn Ladies Invitational All ladies of the Hickory ASGA are invited to participate in the Rock Barn Ladies Invitational on April 22-23, 2006, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa. The two (2) day event includes rounds on the Jones and Jackson courses, buffet dinner/ entertainment, door prizes, tee prizes, 50/50 boards, Pots of Gold, gift certificates for flight winners, and spa access. As we talked, they shared that some of them were part of the Hickory ASGA contingency and were in Myrtle Beach enjoying a little golf and nightlife. Although I did not know them personally, I knew this group by legend. Since the Hickory, UpState SC, and Asheville Chapters publish their golf/ social calendars on each other s websites, I was familiar with Hickory s schedule and requested to join them on Sunday, January 15 th. We played golf at Lakewood Golf Club in Statesville, then continued our social activity by watching the Carolina/Chicago football playoff at the Oyster Bar in Conover, with dinner and drinks. I cannot remember when I have had a more enjoyable day of golf, fun, and laughs! My thanks and congratulations go to the Hickory Chapter because I could not have been more welcome or felt more at home than if I had been one of their members. - - Ray Overstreet, Member UpState SC Chapter of ASGA $5 ante.
