When trailing Achondrite approaching the 800m, commenced to race fiercely and, when awkwardly positioned close to the heels of that runner approaching the 700m, shifted out. Amami then raced wide and without cover for the remainder of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be slow to recover. Exterminate after being slow to begin, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarter of Flying Legend. A short distance later Exterminate had to be eased when crowded between Achondrite and Flying Legend, which shifted in. Banteux from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Flying Legend when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider S Clipperton stated that he had to make some use of his mount in the early stages to establish the lead. He said his mount travelled well thereafter, however, when Achondrite commenced to improve to his outside near the 500m, Flying Legend immediately became under pressure and was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be 1/5 lame in the off-hind leg. Trainer Mr L Bridge was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Flying Legend trialling or racing again. Mr Bridge advised that Flying Legend would now be spelled. RACE 2: Syngenta Provaunt Plate 1200m Maisaa slow to begin.
Iskander began awkwardly. Prince Fawaz began awkwardly and made contact with Citrouille. Prince Fawaz was then shifted behind runners in the early stages from its wide draw. Shaibanat after being slow to begin, then had to be steadied when crowded between Iskander and Doin Shots, which shifted out abruptly. Shaibanat was then shifted behind runners from its wide draw. When questioned regarding his riding rounding the home turn, J Parr stated that, when trailing Maisaa, it was his intention to place his mount to the outside of that runner on straightening. He said that near the 300m, when endeavouring to shift to the outside of Maisaa, he was disappointed for this run when Olympic improved to his outside and as a result Shaibanat was then directed back to the inside of Maisaa to secure clear running. When questioned as to whether there was an opportunity for him to improve between Compatriot and Maisaa rounding the home turn, he stated that he wanted to ensure he provided his mount with clear and uninterrupted running by shifting to the outside of the field and for this reason, although a significant run had developed to his inside, he was focused on following Maisaa. J Parr was advised that in similar circumstances he should leave his options open so as to ensure that he capitalises on advantageous positions as they present themselves. Citrouille near the 1150m, when attempting to shift in behind Prince Fawaz, had to be eased away from the heels of that runner. Apicius hung out approaching and rounding the home turn. Jetski Rider B Shinn could offer no tangible explanation for the disappointing performance, other than the colt raced like a horse that had reached the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr D Beadman advised he will report back on the immediate racing plans for Jetski, at which time the matter will be finalised. B Shinn was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out fully to the end of the race. Compatriot a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be slow to recover. RACE 3: Bayer Exteris Stressgard Handicap 1200m Kopite began awkwardly. Ellie s Encore after being slow to begin, did not muster any early speed despite being ridden along. Little Red Shoes raced keenly in the early stages and approaching the 800m had to be restrained from the heels of To Your Health (C Reith), which shifted in when not clear. C Reith was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
Koonunga when questioned, rider J Ford stated that he was instructed to race prominently. He said from his wide barrier he rode his mount along in the early stages, however, when runners drawn to his inside improved quickly, rather than race wide and without cover, he elected to restrain his mount and obtain a trailing position behind Mollyfied near the 800m. He added that the mare did not feel comfortable in its action throughout the middle stages and when placed under pressure in the straight did not stretch out as he had hoped. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slow to recover. Alart raced wide and without cover throughout the event. examination revealed the mare lost its off-hind plate. A post-race veterinary Mollyfied when questioned, rider App. J Van Overmeire stated that despite being ridden vigorously in the early stages to race prominently, when other runners showed superior speed, he was unable to lead and, therefore, elected to take a trailing position. He said that his mount travelled well in the middle stages, however, soon after straightening was a beaten horse and failed to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be 3/5 lame in the near-foreleg. Trainer Mr G Ryan was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Mollyfied trialling or racing again. RACE 4: ICL Tri Smart Handicap 1200m Bubbles N Troubles began awkwardly and was then shifted behind runners from its wide draw. Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight until near the 100m, where it was shifted to the outside of Gentle Persuasion. Unguarded after being slow to begin, was then crowded between Charretera and Reginae, which shifted out. When questioned, rider T Clark stated that his mount travelled well throughout the event, however, was disappointing in the manner in which it weakened over the final 100m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be 1/5 lame in the near-hind leg. Stable representative Mr W Freedman was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the filly trialling or racing again. Bring The Magic from the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. RACE 5: Turfculture Impala Fungicide Handicap 1900m Seababe after beginning only fairly, was then crowded between Marcellina and Makdanife, which was carried out by Cape Wickham. When questioned regarding her riding, App. J Duggan stated that she was able to obtain a trailing position behind Scotty Be Gotti throughout the event. She said that approaching the 600m, when her mount was only travelling fairly, it was her intention to save ground and look for inside runs. She added that passing the 600m when she observed Scotty Be Gotti commence to lay out and lose ground, she attempted to improve to that runner s inside, however, when Scotty Be Gotti shifted back in a short distance later she was then disappointed for this run and became held up for some distance approaching the 400m. App. Duggan further stated that, whilst there was an opportunity for her to shift to the outside of Scotty Be Gotti after the 600m, which would have afforded her clear and uninterrupted running, she elected to maintain a trailing position behind Scotty Be Gotti, bearing in mind the manner in which her mount was travelling. Stewards advised App. Duggan that she had erred in remaining behind Scotty Be Gotti after the 600m when it was available for her to shift to its outside, rather than endeavour to improve to its inside. Stewards advised App. Duggan that her riding lacked the necessary judgement of an
apprentice rider in the metropolitan area and accordingly the Stewards referred App. Duggan to the Riding Skills Panel for remedial training. Never Been Another from the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Cape Wickham rider C Lever stated that his mount was inclined to lay out throughout the event and he attributed this to the gelding not handling the tight turning circuit of the Gosford track. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stewards deemed the performance of Cape Wickham to be unacceptable and as such trainer D Pfieffer was advised that the gelding will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being permitted to race again. Mandalong Tapit when questioned regarding the colt settling towards the rear of the field when Stewards had been notified that it was to be ridden positively in the early stages today, rider J Collett reported on return to scale that his instructions, after arriving in the mounting enclosure, had been expanded upon to having Mandalong Tapit positioned where it was comfortable. The matter was adjourned so as to allow the Stewards to interview trainer Mr G Nickson. RACE 6: Turfcare Australia Handicap 1600m Invicta Stewards permitted R Thompson to ride the gelding 0.5 kilogram over its allotted weight of 53.5 kilograms. Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Harmattan - Stewards considered a protest lodged by H Bowman, rider of 2 nd placegetter Harmattan against White Boots being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 50m. After considering all the evidence, the Stewards established that near the 50m White Boots commenced to shift out slightly and made slight contact with Harmattan. Bearing in mind the minor nature of the interference suffered to Harmattan, the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred Harmattan would have beaten White Boots and the protest was dismissed. Laid in when placed under pressure in the straight. B Shinn (White Boots) was spoken to regarding his positioning of his whip relative to Harmattan over the final 50m and was advised that he should not place his whip in a position that may impede other runners. Hogmanay crowded on jumping between White Boots and Harmattan, both of which shifted ground. Tiger s Story slow to begin. Trainer Mr J Waters was advised that the gelding, which was beaten in excess of 50 lengths, would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to being permitted to race again. Bastia Prior to the declaration of correct weight, B Avdulla viewed the Stewards patrol films to ascertain if there were grounds to protest against the winner White Boots in respect to interference near the 150m. In addition, the Stewards also viewed the films to determine if there were grounds for protest for Bastia against Calculated, which was positioned between Bastia and White Boots. When B Avdulla was satisfied there were insufficient grounds to protest, and as Stewards were similarly satisfied, both parties declined to proceed with a protest. B Shinn, rider of White Boots, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under
AR131(a) in that near the 150m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Calculated, which was taken in and across the running of Bastia, which lost its rightful running and had to be checked. After taking further submissions, B Shinn was reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances when his mounts are giving him an indication of laying in, he should not endeavour to change his whip over to another hand and should place both hands on the reins in an endeavour to keep his mounts straight. Rider B Avdulla was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out to the finish of the race wherever possible. RACE 7: Dr Joe Vargas Handicap 1200m Clear The Beach slow to begin. Oriental Runner raced wide and without cover after the 800m. On straightening was hampered and carried wider by The Pharoah, which was bumped and taken out by Black Chilli. Hung in under pressure in the straight and approaching the 100m App. M Weir had to change her whip over to her right hand. Bella Vella approaching the 800m commenced to race strongly and approaching the 700m had to be restrained from the heels of Oriental Runner. Bella Vella then continued to race keenly thereafter. When questioned regarding the performance, App. R Dolan stated that he
anticipated racing prominently, however, when runners quickly improved to his inside, he elected to restrain and take up a position with cover behind midfield. He said that in his opinion his mount was not suited by travelling back in the field and, given the manner in which the mare raced throughout, was left without a finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr Grumpy when racing keenly in the middle stages near the 700m had to be restrained from the heels of The Pharoah.
