New Orleans was a combined 5-11 against the I-Cubs at Zephyr Field the last two years, after posting a 16-4 mark at home vs. Iowa over the previous three seasons, but could clinch their first series victory of the season with a win tonight. YESTERDAY S NEWS Kenny Wilson s double in the bottom of the ninth scored Don Kelly from first base with the winning run as the Zephyrs walked off against the Iowa Cubs, 3-2. Elliot Soto began the winning rally with a leadoff single, and after Kelly reached on a force out, Wilson s line drive to right-center field allowed Kelly to race around the bases and narrowly avoid a tag at the plate to bring home the game-winner. The Z s got 6.2 strong innings from starter Kendry Flores, who retired the first 13 batters until Albert Almora s one-out double in the fifth. Destin Hood handed Flores a quick 1- lead with a first-inning RBI single to cash in a leadoff walk by Wilson, and Hood doubled the lead in sixth with his second home run in as many days. Almora put the Cubs on the board with a seventh-inning solo shot against Flores, and Juan Perez tied the score an inning later with a leadoff homer off Greg Nappo, who scattered a run and four hits over 2.1 innings of relief to get the win despite a blown save. ON THE HILL Dylan Axelrod makes his first start of the year after tossing 2. hitless innings of relief in his season debut on Sunday vs. Omaha, only his seventh relief appearance in 79 career outings at the Triple-A level between Charlotte and Louisville. year, Axelrod posted a 4.49 ERA (5 ER/1.1 IP) in 19 starts for Louisville, and had four quality starts in his last five assignments prior to a July promotion to the Cincinnati Reds. FAMILIAR RELATIONS New Orleans and Iowa meet for the seventh time in eight games over the first 16 days of the regular season. The teams will then not play again until the final third of the year, when they face each other eight times in a 12-day span from July 26-August 6. UNDER THE HOOD Destin Hood slugged his fourth home run of the season and has hit safely in 1 of 13 games this season, including all six contests vs. Iowa, against whom he is 1x21 (.476) with three doubles, three homers and eight RBI. He did not hit his third home run last year until his 58 th game, on July 17 with AA Reading. Hood s 15 RBI are tied with Albuquerque s Jordan Patterson for second-most in the PCL. WALK-OFF WILSON Kenny Wilson has hit safely in 11 of his 12 starts thus far, batting.311 (14x45), and is riding a six-game hit streak, the longest of the season by a Zephyr. His game-winning double was the first walk-off win for the Z s since last August 7 vs. Round Rock. Wilson, whose 37 stolen bases last year were second-most in the Southern League, has four steals in the first six games of the homestand to move into second place in the PCL with six stolen bases, three behind Omaha s Whit Merrifield. WE LIKE IKE Isaac Galloway charted his third multi-hit effort of the season and second in as many starts, after going 3x4 in the series finale vs. Omaha on Monday. After opening the year 6x32 (.188), Galloway has five hits in his last nine at-bats with a double, a home run and two RBI. GOLDEN GLOVES The Zephyrs have played 37. error-free innings since Austin Nola s fielding error in the eighth inning on Saturday vs. Omaha, the only miscue by a Z s position player this homestand. New Orleans has moved into the league lead with a.988 fielding percentage, committing six errors in 517 total chances. IN THE CLUTCH New Orleans is batting.197 (24x122) with runners in scoring position, and.134 (7x53) with RISP and two outs, ranking 15 th in the PCL in both categories. Oklahoma City (.187) is last in hitting with RISP, and Colorado Springs (.95) is last with RISP and two outs. ROSTER MOVES The Marlins have recalled right-hander Jose Urena and outrighted righty Dustin McGowan to New Orleans. Urena fired 5. innings of one-hit ball in his win over Omaha on Monday and was 1-1 with a 6.3 ERA in three starts. McGowan had been designated for assignment on Sunday after yielding two runs and six hits in 5.1 innings across six appearances for Miami. NAWLINS NOTES The Zephyrs have outhit the opposition only twice in 14 games New Orleans has scored in the first inning eight times, totaling 16 runs, their most of any frame Dan Black is hitless in his last five games, a drought of 14 at-bats Robert Andino struck out in all four at-bats last night, the first Zephyr to whiff four times in a game since Isaac Galloway last July 9 at Round Rock The Z s won a one-run game for the first time this year (1-2) after finishing with the league s second-worst record in one-run contests last season (15-23).
