It is now a tradition that every four years we have an annual Olympics so everyone can show their incredible talent. It has been about 2,800 years since our first Olympics and the years will continue eventually. The Olympics were held in a religious part of Olympia near Greece s Southwest Coast. These games were in honor of the Greek god Zeus, the god of lightning and the sky. If an athlete won an event, they received a beautiful crown of olive branch leaves (it didn t poke your head) made from a sacred olive tree and glory for their beloved town. Unfortunately, women couldn t participate in the Ancient Olympics, but these women had their own festival dedicated to the Greek god, Hera who is the goddess of marriage and jealous wife of Zeus. As the Olympics started to get more popular, over 20,000 to 40,000 Greeks attended. It was also a part of Greek culture and religion. These ancient Olympics were quite different from our modern-present games. Instead of teams like today, the athletes would try individually to win the prize. In the old golden days, they wouldn t kick a soccer ball, the athletes would have to run, jump, test their strength, and wrestle. The Greeks would stop any war happening a month before the games started, so men would have time to train and win the events fairly. It was a lucky chance for merchants to sell foods and items since numerous people came to watch the attraction of the year. After 12 centuries, Rome Emperor Theodosius ordered in 393 A.D that all religious cults be forbidden. Now that you know about the ancient Olympics, what do you think is the difference? Would you liked to have seen the first Olympics? O c t o b e r 1 3, 2 0 1 6 The road to the Olympic leads in the end to the best within us. P a g e 2 Modern Olympics By: Jimena E. and Antonio P. This is the modern Olympics. This year, it took place in Rio, Brazil. It s a time to focus on abilities, not disabilities. Jason Shawndale Steen Would a mosquito virus cancel the Olympics? This year's Olympics took place in Rio, Brazil. It was the first time that the Olympics were released in South America. The U.S.A won 46 Gold medals, 37 Silver, and 38 Bronze. The gender that won the most medals were the females. Only 6226 male athletes went to the Olympics and there was 5,137 females that went to the Olympics. Only 84% of the tickets were sold of the 7.5 million ticket due to the fact that the Zika virus that s spreading throughout Brazil. The Olympic mascot was a Vinicius. The mascot is made up of the colors yellow, blue, green, and orange. It's a mix of a monkey and a cat that has the power to fly. Taxi drivers got free English lessons for people visiting from England or the United States. The Olympic opening ceremony lasted about two hours talking about stories of Brazil, and Brazilian competitors that competed all around the world. When the Ceremony ended, they lit the torch up then played the national anthem of Brazil. The Paralympics is the same thing as the Olympics but, they do the sports differently. The Paralympics is for people with special needs. The Paralympics started in September. Only 12% of the tickets were sold for the Paralympics. The Olympics were strongly affected from the Zika virus. Golf was finally played after 112 year absence in the Olympics. The last time it was played was in 1904. The slogan for the Olympics was Live Your Passion. There were 45 events for the Olympics. Each ticket was $1,526.00 to attend. The next Olympics are in 2020. The next country hosting will be Tokyo, Japan. They have already started to build the stadium where the Olympics are going to be held at. Japan s motto will be Discover Tomorrow. The open ceremony will be held on the 24th of July. The 6th graders have a new rotation because it helps students learn more and they will be prepared for seventh grade, according to Dr.G. We asked a few 6th National Clown day was on August 30th. We asked the teachers if it was hard to memorize each student's name from each period. They responded Yes, because it's a little challenging and we have elective class everyday. Some of the students said that they didn t like the rotation because the teachers give out a lot of books and their backpacks got really heavy. We also asked how do the students label their homework from each Who,Where, What? By: Dalila Sierra August 16, it was Sports Day, but not as many people as expected dressed up. Many people dressed up in their sport jerseys waiting to be like their idol. Everyone wants to be their favorite player either basketball, soccer, or football. Are you wondering why people dress up? People dress up for school spirit and to support their favorite player. If someone is inspired by their favorite player, they may want to be just like them though they are great just the way they are. Make sure to dress up to show your school spirit. You should dress up because this year we only had a few people who dress up and we definitely want more people dressing up. Are you going to dress up? National Clown Day By: Angel Verduzco Lights! Snacks! Put your Party Pants on for the Dance! BY: Ashley and Taylor ask? People may think clowns don t matter but they do. It is proven that a clown can make your day better by 54%. The amount of students that attended the dance were 92. We asked Abel A., What should be improved? He responded The party music and the snacks. Why stand around and be bored? Dance around! JV & Varsity Volleyball P a g e 4 What s Up? By : Angelica and Monica What are Varsity and JV throwing these days? August 26th was our Pixley game. As the volleyball players stepped onto the Pixley field they started stretching. As soon as the volleyball players were done stretching they entered the field and started their game. The Varsity team started their game, Pixley was winning at first then, Tipton got the ball back, and sadly lost. We lost as a team but, we still cheered for JV. JV was lost the first game 25 to 18, but they were fine because they weren t done yet. They played their second game and Tipton won 25 to 22. They all cheered but they hadn t won, so they played their third game and Tipton won 15 to 6. Then, the JV team cheered and jump while hugging their teammates. What is Bumping? As the players practiced, Sundale walks into the gym. They started to stretch as soon as they were done both teams started serving back and forth. After 5 minutes, the Varsity team was up to play Sundale. The Varsity teams were ready in their position and they started their game. Tipton started with the ball and the Varsity team made four points with Alejandro Vega s serves. Then Sundale got the ball and they were winning. Sadly, Sundale won the first game. Tipton got more aggressive at the net and won the second game 25 to 16. Will Tipton jump for joy? They put on their game face and played their third game. They got into their position, played, and won. They jumped and hugged their teammates knowing that they won. Then, JV team played their game. On the first game, they lost 24 to 18. The JV team kept faith but sadly lost 25 to 15. Alex serving against Sundale T i p t o n T i g e r T i m e s

P a g e 6 Why be Normal? By: Angel Verduzco If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be Why be normal? Well, ask the students at Tipton Elementary, they ll tell you why we shouldn t be normal because Wacky Day was on September 13th here at Tipton Elementary School. Just like National Clown Day, only a few people dressed up which is a serious problem. We need to have more school spirit and dress up. Not only is it for school spirit but it is for fun. It is to make our day more interesting. Also, it is to test our creativity and come up with new awesome costumes. All in all, we can all agree that Wacky Day here at our school was a great time to be alive just like Nicole said. Anyway, make sure to dress up next time for more upcoming dress up days. Scicon By: Vivianne, Daniela, Anthony, and Marlene Have you ever slept with a snake? Well neither have we but, you can if you visit Scicon. There you will see many different reptiles and animals. Why do the 6th graders have to go to Scicon? The 6th graders have to go to Scicon because it is an educational science camp. It is a hands-on outdoor learning activity that makes students learn more about science and many different animals. The 6th graders said they had a lot of fun because they had time to be with their friends and could go hiking. We asked some of the kids what they thought about Scicon and they said that they had so much fun and that they would like to go again another time in their lives. One of the students felt scared when they went to Scicon and he was happy to go back home because he could eat junk food again. They were all very happy to be back because they got to be with their loved ones again. T i p t o n T i g e r T i m e s
