Music in the Park The Sounds of Cypress is Coming to The end of summer is fast approaching, and the school bell will soon be ringing. What better reason to have a party? Come and join your neighbors at the pool on Saturday September 18th, as we celebrate another great year in. There will be fun and games leading up to what promises to be the highlight of the summer. At 7:00 PM, we will be treated to an outstanding performance by The Sounds of Cypress Concert Winds. The Sounds of Cypress is a dedicated group of musicians that perform repertoire ranging from Americana to Zydeco. (By the way, that s A to Z.) Something you may not know about the group is that two of your neighbors play a key role. Patrick Howard is their President (and Percussionist), and Dee Dee Flores is the Artistic Director and Conductor. So, be sure and put September 18th on your calendar and come enjoy fun and games, and a great evening concert. Keep Our Neighborhood Clean By an ehow Contributing Writer Even a small amount of litter can mar the appearance of a neighborhood. A soda can tossed on a lawn or accumulated cigarette butts along the curb degrades the neighborhood and encourages more litter. Clean up our neighborhood and promote a sense of responsibility Pick up debris on your property and the surrounding areas, sweep walks and curbs and properly dispose of yard waste. Keep Our Neighborhood Clean - (Continued from Cover Page) Sweep the sidewalk and curbs in front of your house. Be willing to pick up litter in public areas in the neighborhood. Resist the temptation to limit the effort to your personal property. Cultivate a sense of ownership regarding the entire neighborhood, and encourage others to do the same. Set good example by keeping a neat, tidy property free of trash, garbage and clutter. Take the trash cans from the curb after pickup. Routinely pick up litter and dispose of it properly. DRIVING SAFELY IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD Neighborhoods are full of all different kinds of people who use the streets, sidewalks, and crosswalks. People driving through a neighborhood may assume that it is a safe place to drive and doesn t require much attention. On the contrary, neighborhoods can be full of surprises and drivers must be constantly vigilant to avoid them. One moment of carelessness or recklessness in a neighborhood could result in a costly accident. Knowing the common hazards and how to negotiate them can help motorists navigate a neighborhood without problems. Common Hazards There are many different types of obstructions or hazards that drivers must watch out for in a neighborhood setting. These include: Children at play. Children often play in and around streets. They may suddenly run out in front of a car to chase a ball without looking. Roadway obstructions. Neighborhood streets can become crowded with all kinds of obstructions, such as parked cars, trash and recycling bins, and bags of leaves or discarded materials. Children, pets, and others may dart out between parked cars or from behind obstructions without warning. Blind corners. Sometimes it can be hard to see around corners because of blocking trees, bushes, mailboxes, light poles, fences, or other obstructions. Pedestrians crossing. Kids walking to or from school or people walking around the neighborhood with kids or pets may cross the street at the corner or in the middle of the street, sometimes without looking both ways. Bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles. These two-wheeled vehicles have as much of a right to use the road as do automobiles. Although bicycles and scooters travel slower than cars, this should not be a problem in a neighborhood in which the speed limit is reduced. ** Do your part to help eliminate these types of hazzards and keep our residents safe (Remember that emergency vehicle access to our homes is critical); avoid parking in the street whenever possible, remember that per the Deed Restrictions, Section 10: No boat, trailer, recreational vehicle, camping unit, bus, commercial use truck, or selfpropelled or tow-able equipment or machinery of any sort or any item deemed offensive by Declaring or the Association shall be permitted to park on any Lot except in an enclosed structure or behind a solid fence so as not to be visible from the street, except that during the construction of improvements on a Lot, necessary construction vehicles may be parked (Continued on Page 5) Electricity is ON SALE at StarTex Power! This restriction shall not apply to automobiles or small noncommercial passenger trucks in operable condition, provided that any such vehicles are parked on an improved driveway which has been approved by the New Construction Committee. Storage of approved vehicles on the driveway or street rightof-ways is defined as parking without movement for a period of forty eight (48) hours or more during a period of seven (7) consecutive days. Safety Tips To avoid having an accident because of the above potential hazards, it is important for driver s to respect others use of the road in residential areas and to do the following: Drive slowly. By driving at or under the reduced speed limit in neighborhoods you can prevent a severe accident. Exercise caution at intersections and turns. Look in all directions for potential hazards. If there are children nearby, know that there is a possibility that they will walk out in front of you without looking. Don't tailgate slower vehicles. Be polite towards bicycles and scooters and keep a safe following distance until you can clearly pass them at a passing distance of greater than three feet. Give pedestrians the right of way. Look for people in the road or people who are looking to cross, and slow down or stop for them especially if there is a crosswalk. Use your lights. At night, always use your headlamps to illuminate the road. In especially dark areas where there are no other vehicles present, you may turn on your high beams to help with visibility.
