1 Volume 2, Issue 8 August 2014 NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSLETTER 4th of July Celebration Wesley and Ben, 10 year old scouts, wrote this article to fulfill their Communicator Webelo Badge requirement. Spring Creek Ranch Neighborhood 4th of July 2014 activities celebrated our countries freedom. A parade of kids and adults rode bikes starting at 9:30 a.m. circling back to the Grey Goose Road Pavilion. They marched and rode to remember our troops marching all over the world. Wesley watched flags and shiny red, white and blue decorations walk and drive by his house to find a brunch awaiting. At the Pavilion, Debbie Gardner s hard work came to life. Fresh fruit, muffins, donuts, cereal and milk lined the picnic tables. Neighbors provided a flag ceremony accompanied by instrumental and vocal chords of patriotic music. Children smiled and ran around playing games to win prizes. Ben mentioned that a raffle for one or two prizes might encourage him to come every year. We surveyed 26 neighbors about improving food and activities in our neighborhood. Out of three holidays the Fourth of July placed at 46% being the most favored. Our results also found that meats would improve next year s celebration with a preference of 62% for steak or bacon and sausage. Lynn Wilkey commented, Activities that allow boys and girls to play are the best. An amazing 77% clearly found organized baseball participation or watching would improve this wonderful neighborhood holiday for adults and kids alike! Copyright 2014 Peel, Inc. 3 Spring Creek HOA Parks and Pavilions We are excited about the new park and pavilion in the neighborhood along the power line trail. The sprinklers and grass have now been installed so the new park area should be looking better all the time. We want to make sure that you are all aware that the pavilions in the neighborhood can be reserved by HOA members. Hopefully you will be able to use these pavilions for an upcoming party or family reunion. To reserve a pavilion simply call or text Shauna Sparks at We are all jointly responsible for the safety in the pavilion and park areas. The HOA is a legal entity made up of all the members. As an HOA we carry insurance to protect against damage to our joint property (the parks, pavilions, trials, fences etc.) and to protect against lawsuits. The insurance is based on the types and number of structures that are in the common areas of the community and on the types of activities that are expected to take place in these areas. For that reason, when we use the common areas like parks and pavilions for personal use or parties we need to follow a few rules. 1 - Requests for any special equipment in the common areas need to be approved by the HOA. Due to our insurance requirements, bounce houses, water slides and similar devices cannot be approved. 2 - The common areas cannot be used for business activities or money making events. 3 - Third party businesses like caterers, party planners, equipment rental services etc. need HOA approval and proof of liability insurance before facilitating activities in the common areas. 4 - Please clean up any trash after you use the common areas/ pavilions and return any tables to their regular configuration. Spring Creek is a great neighborhood and will only continue to get better. Thanks for your support and all that you do as members of our community to make this an exceptional place to live. Sincerely, Luke Chamberlain Spring Creek HOA Board Member Your Community at Your Fingertips 5:23 pm Download the Peel, Inc. iphone App Copyright 2014 Peel, Inc. Spring Creek Ranch - August
4 HOA Reminders The monthly HOA Board Meetings are typically held on the third Tuesday of each month. Please check the calendar on events.html to verify the date and location. Remember that front yards must be installed within 6 months of breaking ground on your new home. Front yards must be sod (pre-cut pieces) only, with an automatic sprinkler system. Vinyl fences must be tan in color. Please visit the resources page on the HOA website for links with detailed information. Monthly statements can be ed (contact K&R) HOA dues can be paid via ACH drafting (contact K&R). You have the option to pay monthly or yearly. If you re able to do so, paying yearly provides the HOA with more operating funds to complete projects throughout the community sooner rather than later. No gravel driveways or horse fences permitted. Those currently in existence must be converted to landscaping/concrete or the fencing must be removed by September 1, When you take your pet for walks in the neighborhood, please remember to pick up after them. There are two new dogipot stations (dog waste removal systems) located along the walking trails. WEBSITE PHOTOS Do you take great photos? Do you take great photos? We are looking for great photos to add to Spring Creek s website. We d love to show the natural beauty of our community online. Photos of the creek, wildlife, wetlands, lake, mountains, etc. would be ideal. All photos should be submitted electronically in high resolution to springcreekhoacec@gmail.com. Photos taken with iphones may not be high enough quality. By submitting your photo you agree to allow your photo to be published in future issues of the Spring Creek Ranch Neighborhood Newsletter and on, 4 Spring Creek Ranch - August 2014 Copyright 2014 Peel, Inc.

6 TENNIS TIPS By USPTA/PTR Master Professional Fernando Velasco The Modern Game: The Backhand Approach Shot In previous newsletters, I offered tips on how to execute the basic strokes for players who are just beginning to play tennis or who want to resume playing. I am now offering suggestions on how to play the modern game mostly geared towards players who are happy with hitting the ball over the net and controlling the point with consistency. These players may be already playing for leagues or in tournaments and are looking for more weapons on the court. In this issue, I will offer instructions on how to execute the Top Backhand Approach Shot. This shot is used when an opponent hits a soft shot that has bounced high over the net. The player will take advantage and will charge to the net, thus hitting with top spin high over the net and hit with power. When the ball hits the court, it will take a big hop, forcing the opponent to fall back close to the fence, or to hit the ball on the rise. This shot can be used as a winner or as an approach shot. In the illustrations, Kaylen Combs, one of the top players of the Grey Rock Tennis Academy, shows the proper technique to execute this stroke. Kaylen is coached by the Director of the Tennis Academy, Darin Pleasant, who is showing her the proper point of contact on step 2. Kaylen plays with her left hand. Step 1: The Back Swing: When Kaylen sees the opportunity, she makes a quick turn of her upper body and takes the racket high and back. The head of the racket is now at shoulder height, her shoulders are turned, the right hand gripping the racket and her left hand relaxed. Her weight is on the front foot as her momentum carries her forward to attack the ball. Her right wrist is laid back to allow maximum point of contact. Step 2: The Point of Contact: The success of a top spin shot is keeping the ball on the strings going from low to high in a 30 degree angle and accelerating the racket head around the outside of the ball. Kaylyn started the swing high and looped it to allow the head of the racket to drop down. She will be brushing around the outside of the ball as she makes contact with it. Her left shoulder is almost opening and her weight has is moving through the shot. Step 3: The Follow Through: In order to get maximum control and power, Kaylen is keeping her right arm extended through the shot. She has snapped her right wrist and has the head of the racket facing down. Her weight is going forward. Step 4: The Finish: Kaylen s upper body acceleration forced the head of the racket to wrap around her left ear, thus creating the most power and topspin on the ball. Her legs are already in position to move forward the net for a volley. Her right foot should naturally move forward due to her momentum and racket speed. From her looks, she apparently hit a very wide cross court approach shot for a defensive return. Step 5: The Volley Winner: Once Kaylen hit, she moved to the net for a winner. By the smile on her face, her backhand approach shot was successful and she won the point with a backhand volley. Look in the next Newsletter for: The Modern Game: The Swinging Forehand Approach Shot Court Time at no additional cost and being able to reserve court time seven days in advance. 6 Spring Creek Ranch - August 2014 Copyright 2014 Peel, Inc.
