FISH BITES The Marlins continue a six-game road swing with the second of three games against the Cincinnati Reds tonight at 7:10 p.m. LHP Caleb Smith is making his seventh start of the season and first career start against Cincinnati. The Reds are countering with Tyler Mahle, who is making his first career start and appearance against Miami. The Marlins entered this road trip off a 4-2 homestand against Colorado (2-1) and Philadelphia (2-1). Miami has won three consecutive series for the first time since August 18-27, 2017. Following this series, Miami will continue its road trip with three games against the Cubs in the Windy City, Monday-Wednesday. LAST NIGHT VS. CINCINNATI The Marlins dropped their second consecutive game, a 4-1 decision to Cincinnati. The Reds had a big first inning, scoring all four of their runs on back-to-back home runs surrendered by Wei-Yin Chen, and were limited to just four hits over their final seven trips to the plate. The Marlins received their only run on Lewis Brinson's fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to center in the fifth inning. Miami loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but couldn't capitalize. Of Miami's five hits, Brian Anderson had two. J.T. Realmuto singled to third in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games. Chen took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts over 4.0 innings. vs. THE REDS The Marlins took the 2017 series, 5-2, winning two of three in Cincinnati from July 21-23, and three of four in Miami from July 27-30. Miami has gone 39-62 in the Queen City, including a 20-30 mark at GABP, and trail the all-time series, 86-110. Last year's series win in Cincinnati was Miami's first at GABP since taking two of three in 2014, and was only their sixth since the ballpark opened in 2003. REAL GOOD ON THE ROAD J.T. Realmuto is a career.319 batter on the road, and owns a.335 road avg. (199x594) since 2016, third-highest in the Majors over the stretch behind only Houston's Jose Altuve (.381; 257x675) and Washington's Daniel Murphy (.337; 187x555). As a team, the Marlins lead the Majors in road batting average since 2014 with a.261 mark. Detroit ranks second at.259, followed by Kansas City (.259), Houston (.258), and the White Sox (.255). EMERGING ARTIST Caleb Smith has struck out a combined 19 batters over his last two starts, marking the sixth-most strikeouts in consecutive starts in Franchise history (see chart at right). Smith ranks fourth in the National League (seventh in MLB) with a strikeout rate of 33.9% (41/121). He trails Max Scherzer (37.4), Robbie Ray (36.3), and Patrick Corbin (34.7) in the NL. He owns a swing/ miss percentage of 25.5%, tied for sixth-best in the Majors with Gerrit Cole, behind Scherzer (27.2), Jacob degrom (26.5), James Paxton (26.5), Eduardo Rodriguez (25.8), and Justin Verlander (25.6). DID I CATCH A NINER IN THERE? Caleb Smith is looking to become just the third pitcher in Marlins history to record nine-or-more strikeouts in three-or-more consecutive starts. José Fernández made four consecutive starts with nine-or-more strikeouts from May 9-26, 2016. Jesus Sanchez had three straight from September 13-26, 1998. STARTING FRESH The Marlins starting rotation has been keeping games close this season, and since April 22 they rank third in the Majors with a 2.31 ERA (62.1/16). The Yankees lead the Majors at 1.98, followed by the Cubs at 2.15. Since that date, Marlins starters have provided six quality starts over the 11-game stretch and limited opponents to a.204 average against, fourth-best in MLB (Yankees-.172; Astros-.182; Cubs-.199). Prior to April 22, Marlins starters had only five quality starts through the first 20 games and a.255 average against, 21st in MLB. BLOWN AWAY Miami's bullpen is on track to annihilate a franchise record for strikeouts by relievers. The Marlins' pen leads the National League and ranks second in the Majors (Yankees-166) with 142 punchouts. Miami relievers are on pace to record 742 strikeouts for the season, which would shatter the current record of 570, done in 2016. Last season, the 'pen recorded the second-most strikeouts in a single season with 559. LIFE ON THE ROAD IS NOT EASY Miami's ERA on the road ranks last in the Majors at 6.83, while their home ERA sits at 3.27. That marks the largest ERA differential in the Majors. Baltimore ranks second at 1.78 (4.27 at home/6.05 on road), followed by Pittsburgh (3.42/4.95) and Washington (3.04/4.57), who are both at 1.53. BEAT THE STREAK The Marlins have gone 7-8 in the 15 games since J.T. Realmuto's return from the DL. In that time, Realmuto has hit.333 (18x54), which includes a current 12-game hitting streak. The 12-game streak is the longest by a Marlin this season and is the longest of his career, besting an 11-game run from July 25-August 8, 2016. Over his streak, Realmuto has hit.340 (16x47). His current streak is tied with Wilson Ramos for the longest active hitting streak in the Majors. Hechavarria opened a career afternoon with a bases-loaded triple in the first inning, and followed it up with a grand slam in the third, giving him seven RBI on the day. He became the fourth player in Club history to reach that mark. In addition, he broke the NL record for single-game RBI by a Cuban-born player (previously six by several players, including Orestes Destrade for the Marlins on 8/27/93 vs. San Francisco). It was the second-highest total for a Cuban in the Majors since 1920, tied with Rafael Palmeiro (7/28/03 at Seattle for Texas) and Roman Majias (9/21/63 vs. Minnesota for Boston), falling one short of Jose Canseco s record of eight (6/13/94 at Seattle for Texas). - Stats LLC.
