Rodriguez, 9 THE ZEPHYRS The Zephyrs begin an eight-game homestand with the opener of a four-game set against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The Z's and Sky Sox began the year with a four-game series at Zephyr Field, the first four of 16 meetings between the clubs over the season's first 62 days, with Colorado Springs nabbing three games by limiting New Orleans to a.175 team batting average (22x126). YESTERDAY S NEWS Josh Rodriguez hit the second pitch of the game over the left field fence, and Brian Flynn tossed 7.0 innings of one-hit ball as the Zephyrs earned a series split with a 1-0 win over Iowa. Flynn struck out seven and retired the final 19 batters he faced after allowing a single to Chris Valaika and a walk to Josh Vitters with two outs in the first inning. He earned the first win in his last 10 starts between the Z's and Marlins, dating to a victory over Iowa on 8/17 last season. Following the Rodriguez homer, I-Cubs starter Tsuyoshi Wada held the Z's to just two more hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Henry Rodriguez picked up his first save of the season with four strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Rob Brantly got a hit in his fourth straight game, a double in the seventh inning. ON THE HILL Bryan Evans will make his fourth start of the season and second against Colorado Springs. The Sky Sox roughed Evans up with six runs and 11 hits in 4.1 innings, including two home runs, in Evans first career Triple-A start on 4/4. Evans is coming off a winning effort in his last start on Monday at Oklahoma City when he held the RedHawks to three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of a 14-8 Zephyrs win. Evans has surrendered four home runs in his first three starts, tied for fourth-most in the PCL, after serving up just one long ball over his final five starts of 2013 with AA Jacksonville. FAR FROM BOUR-ING Justin Bour went 1x4 on Friday at Iowa to extend his streak of consecutive games having reached base to 16. Bour had his 14-game hitting streak snapped the day before by going 0x4 day with an intentional walk. He also went his eighth straight game without a strikeout, a string of 30 at-bats, and his three strikeouts this season are tied for second-fewest among the league s 119 qualified hitters. His 22 hits are tied for fourth in the PCL, and his four intentional walks are the most in the league. THE WHIFF Flynn struck out a season-high seven Iowa hitters on Friday, and Henry Rodriguez added four to give the Zephyrs pitching staff its eighth double-digit strikeout game of the season. Z s pitchers struck out 33 I-Cubs in their four-game series and lead the PCL with 147 punchouts, 11 more than second-place Iowa. GOOSE EGGS The Zephyrs recorded their first shutout win since last 8/30 vs. Albuquerque. They had 12 shutout wins a year ago, the fourth consecutive season New Orleans posted at least 10 shutouts; only five other PCL teams (Memphis, Iowa and Tacoma in 2013, Nashville in 2012 and Omaha in 2010) have reached that plateau over the last four years. The Z's have played five 1-0 games in Des Moines since the start of the 2011 season, with last night marking the first victory. OH, HENRY! Despite pitching just 9.1 innings this season, Henry Rodriguez is seventh in the PCL with 20 strikeouts. His 19.29 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched ranks second in the league to Tacoma's Brandon Maurer (19.89). Rodriguez has fanned at least three batters in each of his five appearances, and has limited right-handers to a.087 average (2x23) with 15 punchouts. HOT ROD Josh Rodriguez belted his team-leading third home run and had the first leadoff homer by a Zephyr since Kevin Mattison last 8/13 at Omaha. He has hit safely in eight of his last nine games with a.378 (14x37) batting average in that span, including two homers, two doubles, three RBI, nine runs scored and three stolen bases. STRANDED The Zephyrs left four runners on base Friday and stranded 27 through their four games in Iowa (6.75 per game) and left 56 runners on base in the eight-game road trip. They also hit.190 (8x42) with runners in scoring position in Iowa and are hitting.233 with RISP this season, second-worst in the league ahead of only Nashville (.190). ROSTER MOVES Left-handed reliever Greg Nappo has been sent to AA Jacksonville with righty Collin Cargill joining the Zephyrs from Jacksonville. Cargill had a 5.40 ERA (3 ER / 7.0 IP) with four walks and five strikeouts in five appearances for the Suns. Nappo was 1-0 with a 12.27 ERA (5 ER / 3.2 IP) in three outings with the Zephyrs. NAWLINS NOTES The Z s have not grounded into a double play in three straight games, and their nine for the season is the third-fewest behind Salt Lake and Round Rock (8) Zephyrs hitters struck out five times on Friday, the first time in three games they had fewer than 10 K s. Their 134 for the season are third-most behind Oklahoma City and Iowa, which both have 136 The Zephyrs have been outscored 44-16 in dropping their last seven home games.

Evans allowed a tworun homer to the fourth batter of the game, Ben Paulsen, and Kyle Parker s two-run blast in the fifth knocked Evans from the game. The two home runs were the most Evans had allowed in a game since last 5/26 in his second start of the year at AA Jacksonville, a 2-0 loss to Birmingham. CONTROL ISSUES Evans walked two batters in each of his two starts against Oklahoma City and threw three wild pitches, two of them on 4/14 at OKC. He walked seven hitters through 78.2 innings in his 21 appearances (11 starts) in 2013 with AA Jacksonville had and not allowed multiple free passes in two consecutive games since the end of the 2012 season with Jacksonville as part of a stretch when he walked two or more hitters in each of his eight starts to close the season. Oklahoma City batters were 2x5 against Evans in his last start, including a walk to Austin Wates in the first inning and a home run by George Springer in the fifth. Batters leading off an inning hit.208 (16x77) with one walk against him in 2013, down from a.333 mark (38x114) the previous season. BEARING DOWN Opponents batting averages drop from.400 (14x35) with the bases empty against Evans to.207 (6x29) when runners are on base. Evans has also limited hitters to three hits in 13 at-bats (.231) when runners are in scoring position. BATTLING BACK Evans has excelled when he has fallen behind in counts.
