February 2015 Issue I I N T H E L NAMING PROCESS FOR NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS! At the January 26, 2015 Work Session, the Superintendent and Board Members discussed the naming process for the new elementary schools. Dr. Neill and Board Members agreed that a starting point in the process would be Cahaba Elementary School and Magnolia Elementary School. Anyone wishing to provide input or suggestions may email: newschool@trussvillecityschools.com. It is planned for Board Members to discuss the input and suggestions at the February Work Session and then place two names on the agenda for consideration for thirty days. Board Members could then make a naming decision at the March Board Meeting. The 1st Naming Opportunity for the new Hewitt-Trussville Stadium! Wendy Mann and Pam Smith purchased the naming of the radio room in honor of their father John H. Paine, past Voice of the Huskies. 1st Robotics Team at Paine Primary School This year. all second grade students participated in a computer programming activity in their computer class. The robotics team sponsors were looking for students who displayed an aptitude for robotics, as well as an interest in the programming activities. Twenty-four students were selected to be a part of our very first team. Academy of Finance During the 2014 Fall Semester, the Academy of Finance students in Ms. Howell s classes competed in the Alabama Council on Economic Education s Stock Market Game. The competition is sponsored each semester by Sterne Agee, a wealth management and investment banking firm. Out of the 1074 teams competing from schools in the state of Alabama, Hewitt-Trussville High School had a team finish among the top 30 teams. The students were Josh Parker, Caleb Woodard, Jordan Price, John Humphries, and Blake Hatcher (not pictured). The students were awarded $25.00 for their efforts. The Academy of Business and Finance students learned many lessons on the importance of investing and look forward to having more students compete this semester. The team was in the tip 100 in the state and top 30 in the north region. Great Job Students! 3rd Grade Teachers at Paine Intermediate School have kicked off a voluntary book study on Classroom Management. A group of 3rd grade teachers felt the need to learn more about managing classrooms effectively, so they voluntarily decided to enhance their knowledge base by participating in a book study led by one of our very own teachers, Mrs. Anne Owens. The group will meet periodically throughout this semester until they complete their reading.

Recipe Club At HTMS HTMS Charity Basketball Game 2015 10th Year benefitting 2015-16 HTMS Cheerleading Candidates There will be a mandatory parent meeting for anyone interested in trying out for 2015-16 HTMS cheerleader! The parent meeting will be on Tuesday, February 17 at 5:30 pm in the HTMS auditorium! Tryout material will be taught during a mandatory clinic March 2-5. Tryouts will be held immediately after school on March 6th! The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research Event Date: 2/3/15 at 6:30 HTMS Main Gym Game night admission $5.00 Activities include: all completion cheer teams pre-game performance, 8 th Girls Basketball team vs Basketball Cheerleaders, Dance Team/Athletes performing at halftime, Seventh Grade Basketball Teams vs their Parents, choir, pep-band, and of course the always popular 8 th Grade Boys Basketball Team as our cheerleaders. As part of club time, and an extension of science class. A group of 7th graders "Skyped" with a wildlife biologist from Canada! This was so cool and a very authentic learning experience. PAINE CAMPUS LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR The Trussville Community participates in the annual Valentine "Love Your Neighbor Food Drive," and the Paine Intermediate family will participate once again this year!! We are asking everyone to bring snacks and breakfast food items to give. The drive will run February 9-13, 2015 to benefit TEAM- Trussville's local food bank. More details to follow from PI. TRUSSVILLE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT T.E.A.M. For immediate release TRUSSVILLE, AL The Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) is pleased to announce a community-wide food drive to be held in February. This sixth annual Love Your Neighbor food drive will be held in conjunction with Valentine s Day. Collection points will be manned at various locations and times during the week of February 16. A drive through kick-off will be held on Saturday, February 14, from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot at First Methodist Church of Trussville. TACC Executive Director Diane Poole says, We try to make it easy for people in our drive-through world to donate, so on that Saturday, people can actually drive into the parking lot, drop off their non-perishable items to volunteers, and then drive on out. They don t even have to get out of their cars. Celebrity volunteers plan to be on-hand at the kickoff at First Methodist Church to greet contributors. Area churches which participate as T.E.A.M. members include Clear Branch United Methodist Church, Deerfoot Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Trussville, First Methodist Church of Trussville, Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Faith Lutheran Church, and Cahaba Springs Presbyterian Church, and Holy Infant of Prague Catholic Church. In addition, the McSweeney Foundation is also a member of T.E.A.M. Drop-off locations include participating T.E.A.M. churches (listed above), the Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Trussville fire station on Main Street in downtown Trussville, McSweeney Foundation/MCM Custom Vehicles, and T.E.A.M. All locations will gladly accept donations Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during that week. Most of the participating churches will also conduct drives on Sunday, February 15 and February 22. You may also leave donations at the T.E.A.M. location any time.
HTHS Library thanks the Republican Women of Trussville. On January 14, they donated the book An American Life: Ronald Reagan. The book was donated to the library in honor of HTHS student Kristen Bittle and other students who entered their essay contest, What is a good American citizen?. THANK YOU!
