Lakeville South COUGAR WRESTLING

Guidelines What is a Lakeville South Wrestler? A Lakeville South Wrestler always follows the Ten Commandments of Wrestling. Ten Commandments of Wrestling 1 Thou shall not make excuses 2 Thou shall listen to coaching staff 3 Thou shall not miss practice 4 Thou shall not do other activities to risk injury 5 Thou shall have team leadership 6 Thou shall not miss weight 7 Thou shall not have poor sportsmanship 8 Thou shall not quit 9 Thou shall not be intimidated 10 Thou shall not forget what parents have done Practice Times: Practice will run from 3:15pm to no later than 5:30pm on school days. There may be an occasional Saturday and alternative time practices when athletes are in school breaks during the season. There may also be morning practices during the school week and these practices will begin at 6:00 am. Wrestlers must shower at the school to get ready for academic school day. Practice Dress: All wrestlers must wear a school appropriate T-shirt and shorts to practice. During the practice time, there will be no sweatshirts or sweatpants worn to lose weight. Practice time is a time to learn the sport of wrestling, not to lose weight for a future weigh in. Any extra weight will need to be lost after regularly scheduled practice time. This will be strictly enforced!!

Practice Attitude: Team members are to show good character on the mat as well as off. Foul language will not be tolerated! Childish stunts, including but not limited to Hazing will not be tolerated. Hustle in and out of demonstrations and coaching discussions. Get to work after being told to do so. Once wrestling begins, wrestlers are not to sit down unless told to do so. During demonstrations, wrestlers may take a knee or remain standing. Skin Issues: The coaching staff will perform regular skin checks during the season. However, If a wrestler finds something that looks suspicious, it needs to be brought to the attention of the coaching staff immediately! Wrestlers will need to get a skin form to bring to the Dr. s office for the Dr. to sign. No wrestler can wrestle without a signed form!! Period!!! Be responsible!! Practice Absent Procedures: if a wrestler is going to absent for any reason, on any occasion, The head coach must be notified by email or phone on or before the day the wrestler is expected to be absent! A parent email or phone call will not automatically excuse an absence. Excused absences are deemed by coaching staff. Unexcused absences will not be tolerated and could result in dismissal from the team. Any missed practice will require a make-up practice. Time and place TBA Injury Policy: 1.) If a wrestler becomes injured, they are still required to attend practice; dress for practice, and do what you can to contribute to the team in any way. 2.) If you feel a need to see a trainer, you must dress for practice, see a coach, and go before practice begins. If you are not back before practice begins, you will need a note from the trainer. If the trainer is not in do not wait come back to practice immediately. Line-up/Determination: The Varsity and Jr. Varsity line-ups are determined by wrestle offs or by wrestling at the Varsity level in an open weight class. Wrestle off eligibility will be determined by coaching staff. We will limit wrestle offs to no more that 3-5 a season. If a person is in the varsity line-up, they must lose two straight matches by the same guy to lose their Varsity spot. To Wrestle-off you need to notify coaches one week in advance. You also need to be within five pounds of the weight you are wrestling off for at time of wrestle-off (unless otherwise noted by coaches). For Individual Sections: determination between two Varsity wrestlers will be a best 2 out of 3 wrestle off. Lettering Criteria: In order to earn a varsity or junior varsity letter, wrestlers will need to earn 20 points during the regular wrestling season. Wrestlers will earn 2 pts for competing in Varsity and Jr. Varsity Tournaments, and 1 point for dual meets. (See attached Form for full Criteria) Academics: All wrestlers are student athletes!!! This means that the student comes first! However, missing practice for homework is unacceptable! Wrestlers must be able to balance the school load and the athletic load at the same time. Wrestlers who are struggling in certain academic areas need to be responsible and ask for help from their respective teachers, deans, etc. If it is determined that academic responsibilities are not being meet, the wrestler will face

adverse consequences that are out of the hands of the coaching staff. Academic penalties are set by the school district and school administrators will make the final call. Rules that must be followed by each member of the LSHS wrestling team. No one is exempt!! Period!! 1. BE ON TIME! This means ready to wrestle or work out at the start of practice (3:15pm). All tardy wrestlers must have a note from their parent, teacher, or trainer explaining why they are late. No Exceptions!! 2. You must attend every practice! Again, if you are not able attend practice; the coach must be notified by email or with a phone call from parent, Dr, Teacher, etc. 3. You must make weight for every dual meet or tournament! This is every single wrestler s responsibility. 4. All roster spots (Varsity, J.V., freshman) filled by that particular wrestler must participate in all tournaments and dual meets. If not, you will forfeit your spot in the weight class. 5. Skin Issues must be reported to the coaching staff immediately! It is the wrestler s responsibility to obtain a doctor s note. 6. All wrestlers are to be respectful at all times! No disrespectful actions will be tolerated toward coaches, referees, teachers, trainers, managers, cheerleaders, etc. 7. Proper uniform must be worn at each practice, tournament, and dual meet. It is the wrestler s responsibility to keep their issued uniform clean and ready for each event! 8. Always keep a positive attitude! Negativity will not be tolerated! In summary, all wrestlers must pursue victory with honor. If you think it is the wrong thing to do, it probably is. Please sign the below documenting that you understand the rules and will follow them as a member of the LSHS wrestling team. Signature: Date:

Off Season Expectations When the season ends, which is the day after the last postseason competition, there is approximately 1 month between the completion of high school wrestling and the beginning of Freestyle and Greco seasons. The LSHS coaching staff encourages all of our Cougar wrestlers who are not actively involved with spring activities to compete in the Olympic style season. The Olympic style season starts in April and will conclude sometime in the July. This is an opportunity to work toward accomplishing the goals you have set for your high school wrestling season. Camps are not a requirement, however, we encourage you to attend the summer wrestling practices starting in June and ending in July. We will be looking into a Team Camp to attend. During the off season, all Varsity and J.V. wrestlers will a be asked to help out during youth events including but not limited to tournaments, fundraising, and Misc. events that will promote the sport of wrestling within the Lakeville community.

Parent Support Parents of any athletic community play a vital role in the short term and long term success of the program itself. The coaching staff deeply understands the importance of your role as parents. In addition, want to foster and continue to grow a healthy relationship going forward. The success of any program starts with trust, respect, and communication to name a few. So, as we move this Bus forward, I want to include you all in the past, present, and future of this wrestling program. The success of this program begins with a strong vision and parents that are willing and wanting to be a part of something special! I believe we have that Something Special right here in this community. With that said, parents, we will need your help with the following: Parent support to help in fundraising Parent support in organizing car pools to get athletes home from North of The River events Parent support with our home dual meets and tournaments Parent support in serving on or being a part of the booster club activities. Parent support at home with the ups and downs a wrestling season will bring, Thanks again for all you have done, are doing, and will do as we move the bus forward in a positive direction. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! Cougar Coaching Staff
