FISH BITES The Marlins continue a 10-game homestand tonight (7:10 p.m.) with the second of three games against the New York Mets, who are only 0.5 game behind the Fish for second in the NL East. Miami is starting RHP José Fernández, who in six career starts against the Metropolitans has gone 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA. New York is countering with RHP Jacob degrom, who in eight previous starts against the Marlins is 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA. The Marlins have gone 7-3 over their last 10 games and are looking to get back to a season-high tying 9-games over.500. The Marlins are celebrating their eighth All-Star Saturday, honoring Dontrelle Willis, with the first 10,000 fans receiving a 2005 All-Star Bobblehead, presented by Stanley Tools. It is also Star Trek Night at Marlins Park, and the Marlins have teamed up with CBS Consumer Entertainment to honor the 50 th Anniversary of the franchise. Special Event package buyers will receive a limited edition Star Trek Night gift item. Tonight's national anthem will be performed by Isabella Pena, and ceremonial first pitches will be thrown by former Marlins starter Dontrelle Willis and former FSU tight end Nick O'Leary. Tonight s game is the sixth contest of 10 straight against NL East opponents, with the homestand continuing against the Phillies (July 25-27), before playing four against the Cardinals (July 28-31). Miami is 5-3 thus far on a 20-game stretch without an off-day to begin the second half. LAST NIGHT VS. THE METS Christian Yelich hit a game-tying home run in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Marlins fell to the Mets, 5-3. The Mets went up 1-0 after the first and built a 2-0 lead after four frames. With one on and one out in the sixth, Yelich went deep to center field, marking his career-best 10 th home run of the season. New York, however, scored once in the seventh and twice in the ninth to go up 5-2. In the ninth, Martín Prado drove in the final run of the game with a pinchhit single to right. Miguel Rojas and Yelich both went 2x4, with both doubling. Adam Conley allowed two runs over 6.0 innings with one walk (intentional) and two strikeouts. David Phelps (4-5) took the loss. THE PRINCE AND HIS CASTLE In his last home start, July 8 vs. Cincinnati, José Fernández improved to 25-1 with a 1.43 earned run average in 36 career home starts. Fernandez's ERA is the second-lowest through his first 36 home starts among pitchers who debuted in the earned-run era (1912 in the National League and 1913 in the American League). The Red Sox Rube Foster had a 1.36 earned-run average over his first 36 career home starts (1913-1916). - Elias - KID KKKKKKKKKK In 18 starts this season, José Fernández has recorded 10+ strikeouts seven times. He is tied with Max Scherzer and David Price for third most such games by a starter this season, behind Clayton Kershaw (9) and Stephen Strasburg (8). His seven starts with 10+ strikeouts is a single-season Marlins record, ahead of Ricky Nolasco's five in both 2009 and '08. For his career, Fernández has 16 such games, most ever by a Marlins starter, and despite missing a year's worth of time, ranks T-9 th among all active Major League starters since 2013. HOT TIMES AT MARLINS PARK Since starting the season 1-7 at home, the Fish have gone 23-13 (.639) over their last 36 at Marlins Park. Miami's home winning percentage since April 21 ranks third among National League clubs, behind San Francisco (.667; 26-13) and the Cubs (.650; 26-14). On the season, Miami has played the fewest home games in the NL (44), yet are tied with the Mets and Pirates for the league lead with 17 saves. The Marlins.236 average against ranks fourth behind Chicago (.205), Los Angeles (.220) and Washington (.221). SWEET SWINGIN' LEFTY Christian Yelich has been putting together his finest season since coming to the Majors, batting.320 with 10 home runs, 54 RBI, a.396 on-base percentage and.499 slugging percentage. His average, HR, OBP and SLG are all career-bests, while his RBI total has tied a career best, last done in 2014. He needs four doubles to have 30 in each of the last three seasons and become the sixth Marlins player in Franchise history to have three-or-more consecutive seasons of 30+ doubles. Dating back to June 27, 2015, Yelich owns the second-highest average among all Major League hitters at.337, behind only Jose Altuve (.345). QUICK FISH The Marlins have legged out 91 infield hits this season, tied with the Rockies for second in the Majors, behind St. Louis (99). J.T. Realmuto leads Miami with 15, which is tied for eighth in the National League, behind league leader Jonathan Villar (21). Ichiro Suzuki ranks second on the club with 11, followed by Martín Prado with 10. Ichiro is the active leader in infield hits with 678, followed by Alex Rodriguez (300) and Jose Reyes (276). MULTIPLE FISH WITH MULTIPLE HITS Miami is one of just three National League teams to feature two-or-more players with 30+ multi-hit games this season. Overall record on this date: 10-11 Christian Yelich (33) leads the Marlins and is T-5 th in the NL, along with Martín Prado (31; T-8 th ) and Marcell Ozuna (30; T- 10 th ). The Colorado Rockies have four players, represented by Carlos Gonzalez (36), DJ LeMahieu (34), Nolan Arenado (31) and Charlie Blackmon (30), while Arizona has two with Jean Segura (35) and Paul Goldschmidt (30). 30-30 CLUB A.J. Ramos, who picked up his 31 st save Tuesday night, recorded his 30 th save of the season on Monday to become just the fourth Marlins pitcher to have two 30-plus save seasons. Ramos set his career high with 32 saves last season. Steve Cishek (2013, 2014), Juan Carlos Oviedo (pitching as Leo Nuñez in 2010, 2011) and Robb Nen (1996, 1997) are the only other Marlins to have multiple seasons of 30+ saves. Additionally, Ramos earned a save in seven of 10 team games from July 5-19, marking the second time he accomplished the feat this season (also, April 24-May 5). Prior to this year, it had only happened twice in team history, done by Steve Cishek (July 20-29, 2014) and Antonio Alfonseca (June 30-July 13, 2000). Suzuki is batting.343 (61x178) this season and is four hits away from becoming the 30 th player in Major League history to record 3,000 hits and tying Roberto Clemente for 29 th on MLB's all-time hit list (Elias). In research provided by Stats LLC, Ichiro Suzuki will become just the second player ever to reach 3,000 hits through his first 16 Major League seasons, following Pete Rose, who recorded 3,164. 16 JOSÉ FERNÁNDEZ PITCHER HT / WT 6 3 / 243 B / T R / R José Fernández is making his 19 th start of 2016, his 11 th at home. He has not allowed an earned run in five of his last seven home outings. He is 6-0 at home in that time with a 0.38 ERA (48.0 ip/2 er). His home ERA since May 9 leads the Majors and his six wins are tied for first. Fernández will be facing New York-NL for the third time this season, second at home. In his last home start vs. the Mets, June 5, he struck out a career-high tying 14 batters, while limiting the Mets to no runs on four hits and no walks. Marked 14 th career 10+ strikeout game, fifth this season, passing Ricky Nolasco for most in Club history. He has had two more double-digit strikeout games since then. On the season, he has seven double-digit strikeout games, tying him with David Price and Max Scherzer for third-most double-digit strikeout games in the Majors this season. Clayton Kershaw has nine of these games and Stephen Strasburg has eight. His 11 wins are one away from tying his career high of 12, done in 2013. In his first start after the All-Star break, July 18 at Philadelphia, Fernández became the third-fastest pitcher (by games started), behind Dwight Gooden (61) and Yu Darvish (62), since 1900 to reach 500 career strikeouts as a starter, according to Elias. However, he was the fastest starting pitcher to 500 strikeouts by inning, doing so in his 400 th career inning. Also in that game, he tied his career-high for strikeouts with 14 (also 6/5/16 vs. NYM, 4/22/14 at ATL and 8/2/13 vs. CLE) and allowed two runs on four hits (one home run) and two walks. Is averaging 13.30 strikeouts/9.0 innings, highest in Majors this season. Max Scherzer is second at 11.43, followed by Stephen Strasburg (11.04) and Noah Syndergaard (10.99). Over career, has averaged 11.26 SO/9, second-highest among MLB starters since 2013, behind only Yu Darvish (11.79). In his last home start on July 8 vs. Cincinnati, Fernández improved to 25-1 with a 1.43 earned-run average in 36 career home starts by allowing one unearned run in the Marlins 3-1 win over the Reds. Fernández s ERA is the second-lowest through his first 36 home starts among pitchers who debuted in the earned-run era (1912 in the NL and 1913 in the AL). The Red Sox s Rube Foster had a 1.36 earned-run average over his first 36 career home starts (1913-1916). - Elias On July 2 at Atlanta, Fernández allowed a career-high nine runs (six earned). He was the first Major League pitcher since Josh Beckett on 5/7/10 to strike out at least eight batters while allowing at least nine runs in a game. In his start on June 11 at Arizona, had an eight-game winning streak snapped. It was the longest of his career and the longest by a Marlins starter since Dontrelle Willis won eight straight from May 25-July 13, 2003. It fell one shy of tying the Club record. Additionally, the eight wins came in consecutive starts, equaling a Club record done by Chris Hammond in 1993. It was the longest consecutive-start win streak in the Majors since Chris Sale won 10 straight starts from October 2, 2015-May 19, 2016. In research provided by Elias, Fernández was 8-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 78 strikeouts over eight starts from April 28-June 5, becoming just third pitcher to go 8-0 with an ERA that low and that many strikeouts over an eight-start span (since Major Leagues started keeping track of earned runs just over 100 years ago). Randy Johnson went 8-0 with a 1.10 ERA and 86 strikeouts over eight starts spanning the 1999 and 2000 seasons; and Clayton Kershaw went 8-0 with a 0.74 ERA and 80 strikeouts over an eight-start stretch in 2014.
