Singing in the New Year A Vocal Competition Sponsored by Maurer Law 7 th annual, Singing in the New Year - A Vocal Competition presented by First Night Spokane and iheartmedia KISS 98.1 Contest Rules and Information OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE OR PAYMENT WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING. (1) GENERAL These rules govern the Singing in the New Year A vocal Competition ( Competition ) for the year 2017, video submission uploaded by Oct 13th, with 20 participants chosen and announced Oct 16 th to go on to the live competition held on Thursday Oct 26 th, (River Park Square Third Floor, 808 W Main Ave) and culminating with a semi-final on Friday December 29th th that will result in 3 finalists moving on to the finale Sunday December 31 st, held during the annual First Night Spokane New Year s Eve event on December 31, in downtown Spokane. (Spokane Convention Center 334 Spokane Falls Blvd.). All participants ( Participants ) in the Competition must be at least 10 years old (with parental consent) in order to be eligible to participate.
2) GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CONTEST During the individual qualifying competition on First Thursday, October 26th, 2017 (Beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 9:00 p.m.) the 20 performer s that were previously selected on Oct 13th th from our video submission, will compete at this event. There will be 10 contestants that will move on to our Semi-final on December 29 th. During the qualifying event, Participants are voted on by a judging panel. Semi-final will be held on Friday, December 29 th with 3 contestants moving on to the grand prize finale held on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at the First Night Spokane event. The Top 3 Participants will perform in front of a panel of judges. Only One (1) winner will be selected as the Grand Prize Singing in the New Year winner. (3) ENTRY AND JUDGING INDIVIDUAL CONTESTS As stated above, Participants who receive the highest score will qualify to compete in the semi-finals on December 29 th based on program rules. At the competition finale, judges, who are selected and approved by First Night Spokane & iheartmedia personnel will evaluate each performance based on the following: 1. Judges will evaluate Participants in each of four (4) categories: a. Singing Ability / Quality of Voice (rhythm/pitch/phrasing) b. Appearance (Clean and wearing performance attire) c. Stage Presence (movement/confidence/command) d. Audience Reaction / Interaction (engaging the crowd/audience applause) 2. The four categories listed above will be scored on a 1-to-10 scale in which 1 is the least possible score and 10 is the best possible score. 3. Judges scorecards will be used to determine the highest-scoring Participant from the top 10 finalists. 4. Participants are permitted to enter into multiple individual qualifying contests; once a Participant is determined to be a winner of an individual qualifying contest that Participant is no longer permitted to enter into additional subsequent individual qualifying contests. 5. Order of competition will be determined by random selection performed by First Night Spokane or parties of iheartmedia members. (4) COMPETITION 1. All performances are limited to no more than 4 minutes. 2. In the event that a Participant endures a technical malfunction ( Malfunction ), as determined by First Night Spokane and iheartmedia members the Participant will have the option to re-start his/her performance at no penalty. 3. Malfunctions include but are not limited to: skipping of digital audio; microphone cutting out / dropping out; echo or feedback through speakers.
4. Malfunctions do not include: Participant movements/actions causing audio to skip; Participant turning off handheld microphone while performing. 5. If it is determined by First Night Spokane & iheartmedia members that a Participant actively caused a Malfunction, that Participant may be disqualified from that individual qualifying contest. 6. During a performance, Participants are not permitted to yield the microphone to any other persons on location for the purpose of aiding the Participant; failure to follow this may result in disqualification. 7. Participants are permitted to engage the audience in singing along to background vocals during the performance of a song. 8. Participants are not permitted to distract other Participants at any time; failure to follow this may result in disqualification. 9. Participants are not permitted to use any obscene gestures or language during performances; failure to follow this may result in disqualification. 10. Participants are not permitted to use props of any kind. 11. Participants may be disqualified from competition if it is determined that he/she is involved in a confrontation with any persons attending the individual qualifying competition events, including but not limited to other Participants, First Night Spokane & iheartmedia members, patrons of the competition location, staff or management of the competition location. 12. In the event that multiple Participants are tied for first place at the finale competition, all tied Participants will be given the opportunity to select an additional song to perform; if a tie score persists, First Night Spokane and iheartmedia members will determine a winner. 13. All decisions made by Judges are to be considered final; arguing with, negotiating with or confronting Judges may result in disqualification; if it is determined that Participants, family members of Participants or anyone directly associated with Participants are conducting themselves inappropriately, the Participant may be disqualified. 14. All disqualifications and associated penalties will be determined by First Night Spokane and iheartmedia members with possible input from Judges. (5) SONG SELECTION AND REQUIREMENTS 1. Equipment for all performances throughout the entirety of the Contest will be provided by a representative of First Night Spokane. 2. Participants are required to use audio equipment provided by the DJ, including but not limited to microphones, speakers and vocal/audio processing devices; Participants are not permitted to use any additional equipment beyond what is provided by the DJ, unless it is a musical instrument cleared by First Night Spokane. 3. Participants may provide their own cd/karaoke cd of their choice. If Participant chooses to use their own cd/karaoke cd, they must provide this to First Night Spokane, 1 week prior to the event to ensure that it works
with the equipment provided. If it is found that the cd/karaoke cd is faulty or does not work with provided equipment, Participant may select another song and submit the following day. Words to the song will not be provided, since this is a vocal competition and not a Karaoke contest. 4. In the event that multiple Participants choose the same song for performance, participants will be asked to choose a different song based on first submission order. This is to avoid repeats and give participants originality and entertainment for those watching the competition. 5. Participants are not permitted to perform songs that contain lyrics or themes that are determined to be vulgar, obscene or sexually explicit. (6) SCHEDULE DETAILS 1. Video Auditions submitted by October 13th 2. Top 20 contestants contacted by October 16th. 3. Thursday, October 26, 2017, Live Auditions, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. event at River Park Square each contestant will sing 1 song. Top 10 chosen. 4. Saturday, December 2 nd, 2017 at 6pm all available contestants will sing a Christmas Carol at the Spokane City Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, as a promotion to the Singing in the New Year competition. 5. Friday December 29 th, Top 10 compete at the Spokane Library Event Center. Top 3 chosen to move on to semi finals 6. Sunday, December 31 st, 7:00 p.m. Top 3 will sing a song together Top 3 perform 2 songs each. 7. Sunday, December 31 st, 8:00 p.m. Top 3 sing a song together. Top 3 perform 2 songs each. 8. Sunday, December 31 st at 11:35 p.m. - Winner will be announced on the outdoor main stage! (7) GRAND PRIZE COMPETITION 1. The Grand Prize competition will be held during the annual First Night Spokane event on Saturday, December 31, 2017 at the Spokane Convention Center and will follow the same rules outlined previously for all individual qualifying competitions, except for the allocation of the final Grand Prize. 2. The final Grand Prize of $1,000.00 in cash will be awarded to the one (1) individual Participant who receives the highest/best individual score from the Judges during the Grand Prize competition on Saturday, December 31, 2017. 3. The final Grand Prize of $1,000.00 is not transferrable and may not be substituted in any way. (8) RESTRICTIONS 1. Employees of First Night Spokane & iheartmedia, its licensee, the licensee s parent, subsidiary and affiliated entities, any advertising and promotional agencies, its participating sponsors and all members of immediate families and/or households are ineligible to participate or win.
2. Previous winners of Singing in the New Year are ineligible to participate.
