Stewards' Reports Print Warrnambool Racing Club Date: Thursday 3 April 2014 Track: Slow 6 upgraded to Dead 5 at 2.15pm Penetrometer: 5.59 Weather: Overcast Rail: Out 7.5m entire circuit Stewards Panel: Mr R Montgomery (Chairman), Mr G Bush, Mr S Bettess, Mr F Beattie & Mr J Rea Riding Changes / Jockey Information Race Horse Rider Replaced By Reason 2 King of the Gods Steven Pateman Patrick Flood Overweight 4 Backburn Trent Wells Patrick Flood Overweight Other Comments / Explanations: All horses engaged in jumping races today were examined by the Racing Victoria s veterinary surgeon Race 1 SCOTTS CATERING MAIDEN HURDLE - 3226 metres: Geeceegazza was scratched at 11.25am after stewards received a telephone call from trainer Chris Hyland who reported that he d been delayed en route to the course. Clangor shifted in abruptly when approaching the second hurdle and as a result jumped awkwardly. Clangor jumped the fourth awkwardly and knuckled on landing. In the early and middle stages Mateo over raced. Divi Filius jumped the eighth hurdle awkwardly, knuckled on landing and dislodged its rider. Divi Filius will be referred to the jumps review panel for assessment. Clangor was eased out of the event and failed to negotiate the final two hurdles. Clangor will be referred to the jumps review panel for assessment. Valediction knuckled after jumping the last hurdle. Clayton Douglas, rider of Mateo, and Tom Ryan, rider of Tambo, were both severely reprimanded for using their whips six times in a forehand manner prior to the 100m. In assessing the penalty, stewards took into account good records of both riders. Clangor and Divi Filius were examined by the Racing Victoria Veterinary surgeon subsequent to the race and no abnormalities were reported.
Race 2 WESTCOAST WILCLEEN BM125 HURDLE - 3226 metres: Steven Pateman was fined a sum of $200 for failing to fulfil his engagement on King of the Gods due to being overweight. King of the Gods & Must Have stood flat footed as the start was effected and lost ground 4L. At the seventh hurdle Royal Butler jumped awkwardly knuckled on landing almost dislodging its rider. Near the 350m Martin Kelly rider of Deltona accidently dropped his whip. Stewards interviewed Steven Pateman along with Des O Keeffe, CEO of the Victorian Jockeys Association, in relation to a large number of weight related offences that Steven Pateman has recorded in the last two years. Stewards advised that they will be working with Mr O Keeffe to find a suitable minimum weight in which Mr Pateman is unable to accept rides under. Mr O Keeffe informed the stewards panel that he would be contacting an expert on weight management issues and together with Mr Pateman, will form a strategy which will allow Mr Pateman to control his weight. Race 3 SCHWEPPES MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres: Street Spyder was resaddled behind the starting gates. Street Spyder was slow into stride. Listo Gitano raced wide without cover in the early stages. Downton raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Brad Rawiller, rider of Listo Gitano, performed below market expectations and could offer no explanation for the poor performance however suggested that Listo Gitano may be better suited with the addition of blinkers. Subsequent veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Track changed to Dead 5 at 2.15pm Race 4 BAILLIES LOGISTICS BM125 STEEPLECHASE - 3450 metres: Stewards accepted the explanation of Trent Wells for being unable to fulfil his engagements on Backburn. After jumping the seventeenth fence Viva Delspec faulted and was eased out of the event. Viva Delspec sustained a serious racing injury to the off side knee and was humanly euthanized. This incident will be referred to the Equine Welfare and Veterinary department and the Jumps Review panel. Tom Ryan rider of Prussian Officer, accidently dropped his whip after jumping the last fence. Steven Pateman, rider of Chaparro, which performed below market expectations, said the gelding was not suited to today s firm conditions and had to be ridden quietly. On getting back into the field, Steven Pateman asked Chaparro for an effort after returning to the course proper was unable to do so. His explanation was noted. A post race veterinary examination of Chaparro revealed no abnormalities. When questioned as to the reasons why he didn t ease Lucky Lindsay out of the race when it started to tale off near the 600m, Kosuke Kawakami explained that although Lucky Lindsay struggled over the latter stages of the race, the gelding had been and still was jumping extremely well. Stewards severely
reprimanded K Kawakami and notified him that in similar circumstances he would be expected to ease his mount out of the race. A post race veterinary examination of Lucky Lindsay revealed it is lame off hind. Lucky Lindsay will need a Veterinary certificate prior to racing. Race 5 WENDY RANKIN FLOWERS F&M BM64 HANDICAP - 1200 metres: Racing Victoria Veterinary surgeon inspected Must you Go, which was returning from injury, and declared it fit to race. Prior to the event Michael Roebuck, trainer of Angel Warrior informed stewards that Angel Warrior would be ridden back in the field today in an effort to finish the race off. Angel Warrior was ridden towards the rear of the field. Antikita jumped awkwardly and lost ground 2L. Rounding the home turn Must You Go was momentarily steadied away from Rubytoo when the mare shifted inwards. Approaching the winning post Must You Go was hampered when tightened for room between Distant Dreams which shifted in slightly and Miss Adelaide which when laying out shifted out slightly. During the incident Miss Adelaide brushed the hind quarters of Must You Go, shifted in abruptly and then had to be checked off the heels of Shysta. As no one rider was fully responsible for the interference, stewards took no action other than to notify Brad Rawiller that he must ensure that he keeps his mount straight when in similar circumstances in the future. Matthew Allen, rider of Antikita which performed below market expectations could offer no explanation for the poor performance other than the mare failed to run on after missing the start. A subsequent veterinary examination of Antikita showed no abnormalities. Race 6 GRAHAMS CLEANING SUPPLIES BM64 HANDICAP - 1400 metres: Lord Ore was crowded for room on jumping. Dashiell was impeded for clear running between the 350m to 200m. In the straight Boot Scootin hung out. Operation Twist had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the straight. When asked if he could offer any explanation for the improved performance of Operation Twist, winner of the race, trainer Darren Weir explained that the mare benefited from today s softer track conditions and also the further distance of today s event. Race 7 SUBWAY HOMEMAKER CENTRE SHOWCASE BM70 HANDICAP - 2044 metres: Approaching the 400m Kansha was unable to improve its position. Kansha then shifted to the outside of the weakening Caroun and in doing so brushed Manarola Magic. Kansha returned having struck itself in running causing an abrasion to its near fore heel. A post race veterinary examination of Caroun, which performed poorly, revealed no abnormalities.
Race 8 WARRNAMBOOL NISSAN SHOWCASE BM70 HANDICAP - 1200 metres: Racing Victoria Veterinary surgeon inspected Heavenly Hop prior to the event and declared it fit to race. Reddamour slow to begin. Falzzon & The Ten Bob bumped on jumping. Near the 100m Rubyone momentarily had to be eased to avoid the heels of Dasilva which shifted in slightly. Regan Bayliss rider of Reddamour which performed below market expectations explained that after being slow away he got into a suitable position in the middle stages of the race however the gelding failed to respond to his riding in the straight. A post race veterinary examination of Reddamour revealed no abnormalities. Brad Rawiller rider of Live for Today which performed below market expectations stated that the gelding felt lethargic en route to the barrier and during the running of the race. Brad Rawliier further explained that Live for Today failed to respond to his riding from the 400m. A post race veterinary examination of Live for Today revealed no abnormalities.
