CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Jacksonville Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2009 St. Johns Golf and Country Club May 31, 2009 What a great day we had Sunday as the Singles group from Jacksonville played at St. Johns Golf and Country Club. We had twenty golfers and a perfect day weatherwise. Five foursomes played a variable game, where we counted best ball on par five s, two best balls on par four s and three best ball s on par three s. We had a two way tie for first, and the team of Florrie Redick, Bernie Connelly, Julie Baumer and Tony Ruberti won the card playoff. The team of John Maloy, Hatti Reddinger, Rita Thaggard and Bill Land finished second. We also paid out for gross and net skins. Bill Lampier had two skins, along with John Maloy and Julie Baumer. Hatti Reddinger, Florie Redick, Bridget Baxendale, Bernie Connelly, Steve Dreisback and Bill Land had one each. The shot of the day goes to Julie Baumer, a potential new member who belongs to Marsh Landing. She had a gross birdie on number 13, which gave her a net 0 on the hole. She sunk a 35 foot putt for the shot of the day. The course was in outstanding condition in spite of just having the greens punched about a week ago. The greens were still fast and true in spite of all the little holes. Everyone was impressed with the course condition and the treatment by all the staff. St. Johns has the finest staff in the state. Everyone had dinner at the club which was also outstanding. It was worth the couple of extra bucks we had to pay to play a superior course. ~Mitch Stewart Osprey Cove Golf Club June 13, 2009 It was Hot Hot Hot but we did have a breeze when the ASGA group drove to Georgia for the meet at Osprey Cove GCC. Fifteen brave souls made the trip. We met early for lunch before golf in the club house and after some goodnatured kidding by all and some fun, we braved the heat and a tough course for golf. The winners for the day on the men s division were Frank Rubino-net 65 and Bob Harmon-net 68. In the women s division, first and second place went to a tie of Florrie Redick and Hattie Reddinger-net 67. Temperatures were in the mid 90 s with the heat index close to 100 degrees!!! Whew this is more like August weather then June! ~Hattie Reddinger Bent Creek Golf Course June 28, 2009 We played Bent Creek on Sunday, June 28 and had a good time. It was HOT. I had selected a 12 noon tee time (midnight might have been better) because of the afternoon thunder shower possibility and the morning church conflict. I was right about the storms - they started about 6:30. We had 12 players at the start. One got dehydrated and quit after 3 holes. Too much Gatorade. Eight of us went to dinner at Chilli's and had a very good dinner and awards banquet. Bob Harmon won the overall contest with a net of 68! I donated a couple of sleeves of balls to the closest to the pin on two par threes. Connie Jongwaard won one and Rita Thaggard the other. The golf course was in great shape and the people at the course did everything they could to make us feel comfortable including free range balls. Look forward to returning sometime in the future. ~Hugh James National Website: www.singlesgolf.com E-Mail: ASGANational@aol.com Office Hours: 8:00am to 4:00pm, M-F (Eastern) National Office: 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE To join ASGA or renew your dues, contact the National Office at above number or go to www.singlesgolf.com/join Play golf with singles from other chapters - - for a complete list, go to www.singlesgolf.com/events Monthly Meeting: Third Wednesday of each month Next Meeting: Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 Meeting Location: Copeland's Restaurant on Southside Blvd. Bring donations for Amelia Island raffle to meeting Spread the word Invite a friend Our Website: ww.jacksonvillesinglesgolf.com Our Hotline: 904-619-8644 See next page for list of officers and board members.) Players included members Lyda Wilder, Rita Thaggard, Barbara Dean and Steve Barber. One new member, Rob Glendinning, played for the first time as well as 2 potential new members, Earl Burris and David Tidwell. Prior to play we met at Giovanni's restaurant in St Augustine for an early lunch with tee times starting at 2 pm. Prizes were awarded after play in the course's snack bar. Rob Glendinning won the prize for lowest actual score and Rita Thaggard for best net score. ~Lyda Wilder Windsor Parke Golf Course July 26, 2009 The golf outing on July 26 at Windsor Park was a great success. The weather was fine, and we had a good turn out with 16 people. CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2009 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, the national office has signed an agreement with the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up s o m e g r e a t courses nearby and have arranged for 10am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. Date: November 12-15. Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf (including cart with GPS & range balls), enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and Friday night s themed Cheeseburgers in Paradise, where the best dressed parrothead will get $100. So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at 704-889-4600. Scotland a Definite Since we did our survey last month, we ve spent a lot of time researching the kinds of things that will make our visit to Scotland a memorable one. We were all a little surprised to see the players at the Open Championship wearing long sleeves. This wasn t a fashion statement. It can get a little bit nippy in Scotland, even in the Summer. So if you play Scotland you ve got to understand Scotland. Expect the unexpected and the trip will be even more enjoyable! Please stay-tuned. We don t want to announce anything until it s on paper. For updates, continue to visit the Scotland website, SinglesGolf.com/Scotland New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. We will post 2-3 options on a website and will send out a national survey for your input. Chicago Celebrates Tenth Anniversary Congratulations to our fine folks up in ChicagoLand for celebrating their tenth year as a chapter of the American Singles Golf Association! The leadership has done a great job over the years keeping the troops happy and we thank them for that. New Chapters / West Coast + East Coast It s been a busy spring and summer with the implementation of a new start-up section on the website. Persons interested in setting-up new ASGA chapters can find the process simplified by going to SinglesGolf.com/start. We d like to thank Connie Vickroy who has started the Bay Area (San Francisco) Chapter of ASGA and Hallie Currigan, for starting the Savannah Chapter. If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc. in a distant city and think they d be an ideal candidate for getting a new ASGA chapter started, please have them contact us. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
