Background information on our organizations can be found below. League of Astonishing Strings China Tour 2016 The tour will take place from March 10 20, 2016 and is truly a once in a lifetime experience for the participants on many levels: Tour will include five performances in some of the world s best concert halls including the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center which has hosted many distinguished ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra. Performances will take place over an 11-day period mimicking a professional tour schedule, giving the students a rare opportunity to experience the life of a professional touring musician. China is on the front page of the newspaper almost every day and this tour will provide the young participants with an opportunity to visit, explore and interact with a country which is an emerging superpower. Tour stops include Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Xuzhou. Tour will provide two valuable opportunities for cultural exchange with the people of China and with the other performing ensembles. In summary, the SSSG and GYD students have been given an opportunity to achieve something that even most professional orchestras and dance companies in North America could only dream of. This tour will give these young musicians a sense of what it s like to work at a professional level and help prepare them for a professional career if they choose to go in that direction.
About the SSSG Founded in 1972, the mission of the Suzuki String School of Guelph is to build a sense of community through the love of music and the arts, and to nurture self-esteem in an atmosphere of mutual commitment and respect. Through music, the school strives to nurture the growth of young people who will contribute to our society as well-rounded, skilled, community-minded citizens. Over the past four decades, the SSSG has raised money, organized activities and performed at countless community events to meet its goals to advance the art of music, build our community, provide accessibility to music education for all members of our communities, create the next generation of positive community members and leaders, and strengthen culture and civil society. The SSSG offers weekly private lessons, regular group lessons, orchestras, chamber music and parent enrichment classes. There are no auditions to enter the program every child is welcome. We have a bursary fund available for families in need of financial support. Our students are also performers. We see the need for young people to gain confidence, sensitivity and leadership skills through performing with others. We put on two mass concerts a year at the River Run Centre, as well as solo recitals, joint concerts with other youth arts organizations, performances at the local Kiwanis Music Festival, and school concerts and performances at many community festivals and events throughout the year. Senior students perform at a very high level both in solo and group performances. Many of them do RCM exams and are scholarship winners at the Guelph Kiwanis Music Festival and provincial finalists at the Ontario Music Festivals Association. They have participated in tours and student exchanges in Ontario, Alberta, Newfoundland, Quebec, Manitoba, USA, Poland and France. They are thrilled to be touring China in March 2016!
