Presenters Corby Guenther Training Manager Bingham McCutchen corby.guenther@bingham.com Jeffrey Roach President EncoreTech jroach@encoretech.com Session Description With budgets tight and resources stretched thin, it's harder than ever to get people to training and to keep their attention when you do, so it is vital that you are able to engage the interests of your audience and convince them of the value of what you have say. Whether you're conducting hands-on training with a small group, creating e-learning materials or delivering a presentation to a packed ballroom, it's not enough to simply provide information. You also need to win them over to see that your ideas or the tools you're teaching will benefit them. We discuss methods for creating more effective presentations by targeting your message to your audience, including interactive elements to maintain their attention and engaging their emotions to win them over to your point of view. Title Slide ILTA 2009 We ve eschewed the official ILTA template in favor of a custom title slide, that allows us to use text and color to generate a specific response within our audience. What sticks out for you? Is it the word audience? We hope so, because that s our intent. Nothing is more important to a live presentation than the audience. Notice we ve also eliminated all logos, branding and references to the speakers and their respective companies. Not only do these take up space, but they also distract the audience. In most situations, you can assume that the audience knows where they are, who you are, and who is sponsoring the event. They re here for your content, so use your canvas wisely to make your ideas come alive. 2 of 45
Slide 3 ILTA 2009 Of course the challenge of working this way is that your presentation may not be very portable. One of the decisions are presenter has to make is whether there will be a handout to accompany their presentation. Each situation is unique, but you shouldn t feel compelled to always provide your audience with a handout. 3 of 45
Slide 4 ILTA 2009 If you do want to provide a handout, keep in mind that it s impossible to share a copy of a presentation that has been designed to be delivered live. And that s the purpose of this particular presentation. Remember, our goal is to make you a better presenter. 4 of 45
Slide 5 ILTA 2009 This doesn t mean you shouldn t consider a handout, but the reality is that the handout will likely take on a different form than the slides used in the presentation. While we are on the subject of handouts, feel free to brand those as much as you like. Unlike a presentation, handouts are designed to be passed around. As we move through the presentation, please keep in mind our objective: to make you a better presenter. You re on your own when it comes to strategizing your handouts ;-) 5 of 45
