Notes from the Board Columnist: Dave Hinderliter Hello! Feel free to pull up a chair while I tell you about our first 2018 Continental Dance Club Board meeting. We started our meeting by discussing 2017, both the good and the bad. I kind of look at our club as a business - if we don t make money, well, we go out of business and close the doors. We did not make a profit last year. Fortunately, due to the efforts of the smart people who have run our club in the past, there was a savings account to fall back on. We owe those former board members a big thank you. We discussed how ballroom dancers get started, how they finally get to the point of feeling confident enough to go to a dance club like ours and make an entrance. For me, I remember, it was less intimidating coming to Continental the first time than my first time walking into a dance studio. How many of you have taken dance lessons at a studio? I have been doing that, and at the very same studio, since 2006. It took me a year or so before I finally got the courage to go other places to social dance. My point is, help spread the word we do not want anyone to stop going to their home studio; we are NOT a dance studio and are not any studio s competition. We are a fun dance club! If you are taking lessons at a studio, that is a great investment in yourself kudos to you. Now come practice and have fun with us at Continental. If you already know how to dance, by all means, come on out! We all feel the best thing we have going for us is the fact we have a great place to dance and socialize every Sunday evening. If you are new, you fill out very little paper work and your entry is free that first time; tell Jane that your new best friend Dave is buying tonight! Then, every month, we have a special Sunday with a theme and great food is always involved pitch-in style. Our meeting was kind of bittersweet. We were saying goodbye to Diane and Carol, who have served on the board for more than six years. We will miss them and want to thank them for all their time and effort, always giving 110%. The sweet part of the evening was welcoming Tanya Marshall and Nancy Lutz to the board. Continued on page 4 February 11 Mardi Gras Party Colors are purple, green and gold Bring snacks page 2

Dance Instruction February From our Dance Instructor Chairman Ben Davis Scott and Yulia Shook will return to the CDC to teach our advanced dancers the Rumba. Scott and Yulia have often been our instructors for a variety of dance lessons. Scott has been teaching ballroom dancing for over 25 years. Yulia married Scott in 2005 and now teaches with her husband. The beginner lesson will also cover rumba, and will take place in the small ballroom. Notes from the Board Continued from page 1 We thank our last month s professional instructor Olga Cansino who taught Viennese Waltz. And we thank our member volunteers, who taught our beginner dancers American Dances Smooth. Please invite your friends to come and learn to dance or to join us in learning some new dance steps. Both beginning and intermediate dance lessons are available only WITH paid admission to the dance. Please, no video recording of the lesson without permission of the instructor. Tanya will be taking over the special Sundays role. Karon Wagner was not at the board meeting, but we are all grateful for her efforts last year with our special Sundays. Tanya is an experienced event planner, but will need lots of help. Please Volunteer!!! Nancy is going to take over Diane s role as treasurer, and Rhoda will be filling Carol s shoes as secretary. We are looking forward to the New Year, eagerly anticipating seeing a bunch of new faces, along with those of members whom we ve not seen in a while. See you on the dance floor! MY CDC Nancy Lutz The curtain has fallen on Thursday-night ballroom dance lessons that once drew crowds, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported in 2014, as owner Nancy Lutz prepared to close the almost forty year old steak house so popular with ballroom dancers. For Nancy herself, the curtain had definitely not come down on dancing. Together with professional instructor Xavier Medina, she competed in the 2015 Meals on Wheels Dancing with the Stars fundraising event, and to this day continues to attend both Indiana Seniors and Continental dances and special events. An Elementary Education major at Butler, Nancy completed her Masters at Ball State, going on to teach fourth grade in Williamsburg, Virginia. Following her high school sweetheart and husband-to-be to Noblesville and then Kokomo, Nancy taught first grade for three years. In 1983, Nancy and Dave (Dave had been vice president of a floralsupply company), bought Calloway s Steak House, renaming it Lutz s Steak House. The three Lutz children grew up doing dishes and bussing tables. Calloway s came with a dance floor, Nancy recalls, and over the years, the couple concentrated on customer service, at the same time creating a Mecca for good music and dancing along with the great food. After Dave died of cancer in 2009, Nancy, with the help of her loyal staff, was able to keep the business going until the end of 2014. Today the site houses a childcare facility. This development might be viewed as a symbol of her life coming full circle, reminiscent of her days teaching little uns, Nancy muses. As one of the two newest members of the CDC Board, Nancy brings a wealth of business expertise and dedication to service along with her obvious love of dance. As compared with other groups, Nancy particularly appreciates Continental Club s emphasis on ballroom dance and its friendly people. Not much has changed through the years at Lutz s Steak House, wrote Betsy Reason in The Times. It s a place loyal customers have been patronizing for 32 years, where everybody seems to know everybody. It s obvious - Nancy Lutz and CDC are a perfect fit!
