FISH BITES The Marlins, looking to snap a four-game losing streak, play the Mets in the third game of their four-game series at Citi Field, the Marlins' final visit to New York this season. Starting for Miami is right-hander Jake Esch, who was recalled today from Triple-A New Orleans and is making his Major League debut. The Mets counter with right-hander Bartolo Colon (12-7, 3.44); he is 7-4, 2.85 in 12 career starts against Miami, with his lone no decision coming in his only start this season. On this trip, the Fish, 0-2, will visit New York for four games (0-2) before heading to Cleveland for three this weekend. It will be the Marlins' first visit to Cleveland since 2012 and just third all-time during the regular season. TODAY'S TRANSACTION The Marlins today placed RHP David Phelps on the 15-day Disabled List with a left oblique strain (retroactive to Aug. 27) and recalled RHP Jake Esch (#67) from Triple-A New Orleans. Esch, making his Major League debut, was 12-10, 4.31 in 26 starts combined with New Orleans and Jacksonville this season. LAST NIGHT VS. THE METS The Marlins fell to the Mets, 7-4, at Citi Field, dropping their fourth-straight contest, which matches their season high. Miami jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Christian Yelich s two-run home run, but the Mets scored three in the bottom of the frame off Tom Koehler (9-10) to take the lead for good. The Mets added two runs in the sixth and another pair in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Yelich, who was batting in the cleanup spot for the first time in his career, snapped a stretch of seven straight games without a homer for Miami. J.T. Realmuto added a solo homer in the ninth and Dee Gordon drove in Jeff Francoeur, who tripled, but the Marlins' ninth-inning rally fell short. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING Jake Esch, who is making his ML debut with tonight's start, is looking to become the 11 th Marlins pitcher to start and win his ML debut. The last Marlins' pitcher to start and win his debut was Justin Nicolino, who won on June 20, 2015 at Cincinnati, 5-0. The others are: A.J. Burnett (1999), Brad Penny (2000), Jason Grilli (2000), Josh Beckett (2001), Scott Olsen (2005), Anibal Sanchez (2006), Ryan Tucker (2008), Adalberto Mendez (2010) & Anthony DeSclafani (2014). OLD GUYS RULE Tonight s game could feature a match-up of the two oldest active players in MLB, with Bartolo Colon (43) the oldest and Ichiro Suzuki (42) the second-oldest currently playing in the Majors. The pair have faced each other 107 times, with Ichiro going 29x106/.274 with three home runs off Colon. The 106 at-bats are Ichiro s second-most against one pitcher, trailing only 122 against John Lackey. For Colon, he has faced Ichiro more than any other hitter, and the 29 hits he s given up to Ichiro are his most vs. any one player. In addition to facing off 107 times during the regular season, the two also faced each other eight times in the 2001 ALCS with Ichiro going.625/5x8 off Colon, giving Ichiro a career mark of.298 (34x114) off Colon, regular season and postseason combined. KYLE WITH A K Kyle Barraclough notched one strikeout Monday night to give him 100 on the season; he is the first Marlins reliever ever to record 100 strikeouts in a season. The Marlins' previous high for a reliever was Robb Nen s 92 strikeouts in 1996. Barraclough, who has worked 61.1 innings on the year, leads all NL relievers (fourth in the Majors) with 14.67 strikeouts per nine innings. He trails only Edwin Diaz (16.29 K/9 IP), Dellin Betances (15.80), and Andrew Miller (15.15). THE X MAN COMETH Xavier Scruggs, who was recalled on Aug. 19, is hitting.333 (10x30) in 11 games with the Marlins, including hitting his first Major League home run on Aug. 20 in Pittsburgh. In the Marlins' past three games, he has five hits, two doubles and two RBI. In consecutive games, Sunday-Monday, the team managed just two runs, with Scruggs driving them both in with two-out doubles. Monday night he had a two-out RBI-double in the eighth inning to put Miami ahead 1-0 in their 2-1 loss. On Sunday, Scruggs hit a two-out RBI double in the second inning to put Miami ahead 1-0 in their 3-1 loss. MY FAVORITE MARTIN Martín Prado is currently fifth in the National League with a.319 batting average and is fourth in the NL with 160 hits. He has 44 multi-hit games, including 17 threeplus hit games and four four-hit games, which are both tied for most in the NL. Prado is hitting.446 (50x112) against left-handed pitchers, best in the Majors; The.446 average against lefties currently sits as the third-highest single-season average since 1974, behind Jeff Bagwell's.457 (48x105) mark in 1994 and Ryan Braun's.450 (50x111) average in 2007. ROAD WORK J.T. Realmuto and Martín Prado are currently ranked first and second in the National League (second and third in the Majors) in road batting average. Realmuto is hitting.352 (77x219) on the road, Prado is hitting.350 (90x257) away from home; the only hitter in the Majors with a higher road batting average is Houston s Jose Altuve (.411/104x253). The Marlins all-time best road batting average was Jeff Conine s.357 road mark in 1994. As a team, the Marlins lead the Majors with a.279 batting average on the road, compared to a.256 mark at home, which is fifth in the NL. POWER RESTORED Christian Yelich s first-inning home run last night snapped a streak of seven straight games, Aug. 23-29, without a home run for the Marlins. The seven straight homerless games was the team s longest stretch of the season and longest since going nine straight games without a home run, April 6-15, 2013. J.T. Realmuto added a ninth-inning home run last night, giving Miami its first multi-homer game since Aug. 19 at Pittsburgh, when they hit three homers. CLOSE ONLY COUNTS IN... Miami has been involved in 22 consecutive games decided by three-or-less runs, marking the longest such streak in Franchise history and the longest by any team this season. The previous mark was 16, done by the Padres from April 30-May 15. Miami's previous record was 12, done two times, and most recently from July 21-August 1, 2013. Miami's last game decided by more than three runs was August 6, when it dropped a 12-6 decision to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. - STATS LLC MOVIN' ON UP MIAMI MARLINS (67-65) RHP Jake Esch (MLB Debut) at NEW YORK METS (68-64) RHP Bartolo Colon (12-7, 3.44) CITI FIELD, FLUSHING, NY Wednesday, August 31, 2016 7:10 P.M.
