FISH BITES The Marlins open a seven-game road swing with the first of three games tonight against the defending World Series Champion Chicago Cubs at 8:05 p.m. EDT. RHP Dan Straily (4-3, 3.56) is making his fourth career start and fifth appearance against the Cubs, going 1-1 with a 6.11 ERA. The Cubs are countering with RHP Eddie Butler (2-1, 4.42), who in two prior appearances against the Fish (one start) is 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA. Miami just completed an 8-2 homestand against the Angels (2-1), Phillies (3-0) and Diamondbacks (3-1). Following this series, the Marlins will travel to the Steel City to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in a four-game weekend set. The schedule then has Miami going home for two games against the Oakland Athletics, sandwiched between off-days, going back on the road for three in Atlanta, and then returning home again for another 10-game homestand. YESTERDAY VS. D-BACKS Miami fought back from two deficits to come away with a series win, downing the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-5, at Marlins Park. The D-backs struck quick, scoring a run off Vance Worley in the first inning. In the bottom of the second, Tyler Moore came to bat with two on and two out and connected for his second homer of the season to put the Fish up 3-1. Following an Arizona run in the third, Derek Dietrich scored Christian Yelich with a sac fly to center field. The D-backs, however, plated three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Dietrich struck again in the fifth with another sacrifice fly, this time scoring Giancarlo Stanton, to equal the score at 5-5. With one out in the seventh, Dietrich doubled to center field. One batter later A.J. Ellis completed an epic 14 pitch at-bat with an RBI single to center to drive in the game winner. The Marlins' bullpen provided 5.1 scoreless frames, giving up just two hits, over the remainder of the game. Nick Wittgren (1-0 ) earned his first win of the season, while AJ Ramos secured his eighth save. ELIAS SAYS A.J. Ellis fouled off eight two-strike pitches before delivering a two-out seventh-inning RBI single that proved to be the game-winner in the Marlins 6 5 victory over the Diamondbacks yesterday. Only two other players in this century drove in the winning run of a game on an at-bat of at least 14 pitches: Jose Lopez of the Mariners against the A s in 2009 (9th inning), and Kevin Youkilis of the White Sox against the Royals in 2012 (14th inning). STANDING TALL Miami wrapped a 10-game homestand yesterday that saw them go 8-2, tied for the second-best 10+-game homestand in Franchise history. The Marlins went 9-1 over a 10-gamer from May 6-15, 1996, and 8-2 from August 18-28, 2006. STEADY EDDIE A SOLID CHOICE Marlins' starting pitcher Edinson Volquez today was named the National League Player of the Week for May 29- June 4, his first career weekly award. Volquez locked down the honors by striking out 10 batters in his first career no-hitter on Saturday against Arizona, the sixth in Club history and the 150th in NL history. However, he was also 2-0 on the week, allowing just one run on three hits over 6.0 innings in a win over the Phillies on May 29, which snapped a season-opening seven-game losing streak. This is the third Player of the Week award for Miami this season, as J.T. Realmuto (April 3-9) and Marcell Ozuna (April 10-16) were the NL's first two winners of the 2017 campaign. PITCHING WITH CONFIDENCE Coming into tonight's start, Marlins' starter Dan Straily has posted the fourth-lowest hits-per-9.0 innings ratio in the National League at 6.38. He trails Max Scherzer (5.94), Robbie Ray (6.13) and Lance Lynn (6.22). Additionally, Straily has recorded a.195 average against, which also ranks fourth in the NL behind Scherzer (.186), Lynn (.192) and Ray (.193). Over his first six starts of the season, Straily went 1-3 with a 4.65 ERA while allowing five home runs and getting a run support average of 3.8. Over his last five outings, he has gone 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA, allowing two home runs while garnering a run support average of 9.4. - Stats LLC ALL THE COMFORTS OF...THE ROAD As a team, the Marlins are hitting.278 on the road, the highest average in the National League and second to only Houston (.290) in the Majors. Miami's 249 road hits rank fifth in the NL behind Atlanta (296), Washington (292), Colorado (280) and Pittsburgh (251). The Fish are averaging 4.68 runs per game in visiting ballparks, which ranks fourth, behind the Mets (6.09), Washington (5.90) and Colorado (4.77). Miami's staff has allowed a total of 199 hits on the road, fewest in the National League and second-fewest in the Majors, behind only the Minnesota Twins (172). ON THE ROAD AGAIN J.T. Realmuto is back on the road, where he has hit considerably better this season, posting a.384 average (33x86), which ranks third in the Majors. He trails only Jose Altuve (.424) and Aaron Hicks (.388) in road average. He has recorded at-least one hit in 20 of 22 road games this season, and had a 15-game road hitting streak snapped in his last appearance, May 24 at Oakland (0x3); that currently stands as the longest road streak in the Majors this season. THE FRIENDLY CONFINES TO THE ALLEGHENY Christian Yelich has excelled at both ballparks on this trip, recording hits in 23 of 24 career games combined at both venues. In 12 career games at Wrigley Field, Yelich has hit.396 (21x53) with at-least one hit in each of those 12 games. It is the longest active hitting streak by a visiting player at Wrigley, and the longest since Hunter Pence went 17 games from 2012-2016. He has had equally impressive numbers in the next city on this trip, as he has hit in 11 of 12 career games at PNC Park (.363/17x47) with five home runs and nine RBI. His five home runs at PNC are the most outside of the NL East, and is tied with his total at Citi Field for the second-most at any road ballpark (six at Nationals Park). BULLPEN REBOUND Over the last eight games, Miami's bullpen has turned things around, surrendering just seven runs over 32.2 combined innings (1.93 ERA). In 15 games prior to the current stretch, Marlins relievers had allowed 36 earned runs (42 total) over 51.0 innings for a 6.35 ERA. On the season, Miami's bullpen ranks sixth in the National League with a 3.92 ERA, while its 10 wins are tied with Cincinnati and the Dodgers for third, behind Arizona (11) and Pittsburgh (11). TORONTO (W/OAK) BIRTHPLACE REDLANDS, CA BORN DECEMBER 1, 1988 OPENING DAY AGE 28 CONTRACT STATUS SIGNED THROUGH 2017 ACQUIRED FROM CINCINNATI IN A FOUR-PLAYER TRADE ON JANUARY 19, 2017 Straily gets the call tonight for the Marlins as they open a seven-game road trip with the first of three against the Cubs here at Wrigley Field. Straily appeared in seven games (one start) for the Cubs during a brief stint on the North Side in 2014. This will be his first career start in the Friendly Confines. He has no record and a 12.15 ERA (6.2 ip/9 er) in four career relief appearances here. Three of those were as a Cub in 2014, when he combined for a 14.54 ERA (4.1/7), and the fourth was one of his three relief appearances for the Reds last season, on April 13 (2.1 ip, 2 er). Has a 6.00 ERA (21.0/14) in four road starts, compared to a 2.27 ERA (39.2/10) in seven starts at Marlins Park. Has earned a win in three consecutive starts, longest stretch of wins in consecutive starts since having four straight from August 7-23 last season, which tied his careerlong streak (also, Aug. 28-September 13, 2013). Has held opponents to a.195 (43x221) batting average this season, which ranks fourth in the NL behind Max Scherzer (.186), Lance Lynn (.192), and Robbie Ray (.193). Remained in the game to retire the side and dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the frame before departing. Took loss in first start of season, April 5 at Washington, surrendering five runs on six hits (one home run) and two walks over 3.1 innings.
