FISH BITES MIAMI MARLINS (29-37) RHP Jose Urena (1-2, 4.44) at NEW YORK YANKEES (34-30) RHP Michael Pineda (7-3, 3.74) YANKEE STADIUM, BRONX, NY Wednesday, June 17, 2015 7:05 P.M. The Marlins and Yankees begin the second leg of this four-game home-and-home set tonight at 7:05 p.m. Rookie right-hander Jose Ureña gets the start for Miami, while the Yankees counter with righty Michael Pineda; both are making their first career starts against their respective opponent. This marks the beginning of a five-game road trip for the Marlins, which will also take them to Cincinnati over the weekend (June 19-21). Miami went 5-1 on the homestand that ended last night, going 3-1 against Colorado and 2-0 against the Yankees. VS. THE YANKEES The Marlins and Yankees pick up where they left off last night, albeit 1,300 miles to the north, as they begin the second leg of a four-game home-and-home set. This is the Marlins first trip to the newest Yankee Stadium, as they have not met the Bombers in the Bronx since June 23-25, 2006, when New York took two of three. Prior to the two-game series in Miami this week, these Clubs had not met since the Marlins went 2-1 against the Yankees at Land Shark Stadium from June 19-21, 2009. The all-time series is knotted, 11-11, but the Yankees hold a 6-2 advantage in the Bronx. LAST NIGHT Miami blitzed the Yankees in a record-setting first inning on its way to a 12-2 win last night at Marlins Park. The Fish sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning and scored eight runs, a Club record for the opening frame. Derek had two hits and an RBI in the rally, while Marcell (two-run, bases-loaded single) and Adeiny (two-run triple) delivered the biggest blows of the inning. Dee finished with three hits, one of seven starting position players to record multiple hits, and Giancarlo hit his 24 th home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth. David Phelps was solid in his first outing against his former team, getting the win (4-3) after tossing 7.0 innings and allowing two runs on six hits and two walks, with five strikeouts. INTERLEAGUE NOTES The Marlins are 5-6 in Interleague Play this season, and have won two straight after snapping a three-game skid to the American League on Monday night. Miami has the third-best IL winning percentage among National League squads (.520/167-154), behind St. Louis (.524/151-137) and the Mets (.524/162-147). Miami leads NL clubs all-time in IL wins. RECORD RALLY The Marlins had an eventful first inning against the Yankees last night. The Fish set a Club record for the first inning with eight runs scored, and for the first time in Club history saw all eight position players record a hit in the first, including Derek, whose two hits marked the first time since August 20, 2012 at Arizona that a Marlins player had two hits in a frame (Carlos Lee, Jose Reyes, and Donovan Solano; fourth inning). They recorded seven consecutive hits for the fourth time in Franchise history, one shy of tying the Club record (May 15, 1998 vs. St. Louis). Lastly, Miami s nine hits in the inning were the second-most in any frame in Club history (fifth time, first at home), behind 10-hit innings in the aforementioned 2012 contest at Arizona and on September 9, 2011 at Pittsburgh (third inning). - Stats LLC HERE S TO ANOTHER ONE... For Marlins Hall of Fame broadcasters Dave Van Horne and Felo Ramirez, tonight marks another special night in their storied careers. For Van Horne, the current Yankee Stadium represents the 54 th stadium in which he has called a Major League game. For Ramirez, he will call action in the 63 rd stadium of his career. He, as well as Van Horne, will have called a game in all 30 of the current stadiums. NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME Giancarlo has hit 17 of his 24 home runs at night, while New York s Mark Teixeira has hit 16 of his 18 after dark. According to Stats LLC, they rank first and second in the Majors in home runs per at-bat at night (min. 100 AB), with going deep into the night every 8.82 at-bats (150 AB/ 17 HR) and Teixeira doing so every 9.50 at-bats (152/16). PITCHING IN Miami s pitching staff has held opponents to fewer than 10 hits in eight straight games, the longest active streak in the Majors, ahead of Arizona (7) and Oakland (7). According to Stats LLC, that is the longest active streak in baseball. Since June 11, the Marlins have allowed fewer than three runs in five of six games, posting a 1.50 ERA (54.0 ip/9 er), tied with St. Louis for the third-lowest mark in the Majors over that span, behind Pittsburgh (0.35) and Arizona (1.23). TRIFECTA Giancarlo recorded his eighth game with three-plus RBI last night, tied with Paul Goldschmidt for the most in the Majors this season. is already closing in on his career high for three-plus RBI games in a season, which is 10 (2014 & 2012), according to Stats LLC. currently leads the Majors in games with an RBI (33), ahead of Bryce Harper (30), and multi-rbi games (18), ahead of Goldschmidt (16). FANNING WITH FLAMES Carter Capps struck out the side for Miami in the eighth inning on Monday night. Capps has registered at least one strikeout in 11 of 12 games this season, and has multiple strikeouts in eight of those outings, including five straight. He has 28 strikeouts in 15.0 innings, an average of 16.80 per 9.0 innings, which leads all relievers (min. 12 appearances), ahead of Enrique Burgos (16.46) and Josh Fields (15.88). Along with A.J. Ramos, who ranks 19 th in the NL with 11.94 SO/9, Capps has helped lead the Miami bullpen to an 8.83 SO/9 mark this season, which ranks third among NL pens, behind the Dodgers (10.04) and Milwaukee (9.33). It would rank second in Franchise history, behind a 9.15 mark in 2014. THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT The Yankees enter this series with 44 combined home runs by its infield, which trails only Houston (53), Cincinnati (51), Toronto (50), Baltimore (48), and Colorado (45) for the most in the Majors. The Marlins infield, however, has posted just 22 home runs, fewest in the Majors, just behind Tampa Bay (23). Meanwhile, the Marlins enter this series leading the Majors with 78 infield hits, ahead of Oakland (72), Pittsburgh (72), Arizona (69), and San Diego (69). The Yankees, meanwhile, have 39 infield hits this season, the second-lowest total in the Majors, ahead of only the Dodgers (32). - Stats LLC FIRST-HALF MARKS IN PERIL GAME # 67 ROAD GAME # 33 (12-20) TONIGHT S BROADCASTS FS Florida WINZ * WAQI^ TOMORROW S GAME INFO START TIME (ET) - 7:05 P.M.
