Kia ora Club Volunteers, Thank you for your commitment to your community. Volunteering to operate a basketball club is a great responsibility and we appreciate that there will be a need for strong support from ABSL and your local Association in order to succeed in our shared vision. We acknowledge that many of our clubs are at the very beginning of their journey and will have little understanding of what is required to run a club. With the support of our established clubs, we have developed a Club Strategy to help get the ball bouncing. Our aim is to provide simple steps that can inform your club volunteers about how to manage your existing membership and/or grow your club with a plan to cope with the potential demand. At every interval in your journey no matter how fast or slow you choose to increase your club capacity, ABSL will be here to support and guide your club. Our goal is to commence local Club versus Club competitions on a regular basis to suit the response of clubs. We can only achieve this if clubs are developing at a similar rate. The tools provided below should hopefully articulate where Club Basketball sits within the wider scope of basketball as a whole across Auckland. We will keep working hard to bring clarity to the way we work across our schools, clubs and Associations for the betterment of the game we love. If you have any questions, feedback or if you would like to offer time or resource towards growing and shaping our Club Strategy, we would love to hear from you. In the meantime, I urge you and your club volunteers to join our Club Forum as a means to stay connected and build your knowledge bank and resource capacity and capability. For more information please contact our Basketball Development Manager (Clubs) Lindsay Tait Lindsay@absl.co.nz Nga mihi, Tracy Atiga Chief Executive Officer 1

We have developed a portfolio of key calendar events, projects and programmes through partnerships. EXPAND ABSL BASKETBALL FUND ABSL have developed the ABSL Basketball Fund Scheme to enable viable solutions for athletes to raise funds and expand opportunities for personal growth and development. We have compiled a series of charity based events to inspire out athletes to consider the impacts of societal issues in community. This character building approach increases high performance capabilities in athletes. 2

Club Basketball is embedded within the Experience and Explore levels of our development pathway. Club basketball is progressively becoming the entry point for novice athletes who want to grow and develop their skills and knowledge of the game. Therefore, ABSL have focused on building a strong club centred network that links our various programmes together. Our Kiwisport funded in-school programmes that we deliver in schools across Auckland now involves a marketing component that directs student participants to seek advancement through their local club/s. In 2018, ABSL will provide schools with Club registration forms and information packs. The different levels of the pyramid are described in greater detail below for your wider understanding of how schools, clubs, Associations and ABSL can support each other to build and grow the game. TALENT IDENTIFICTION MODEL Level 4 - Exceed Going Beyond the Limits of Basketball Athleticism ABSL concept of Exceed focuses on one simple notion: To be The Best, we must be Better than the Best! Therefore our goal is to produce World class Olympians, Tall Blacks, Tall Ferns and 3X3 Athletes that exceed all other eligible national athletes. To succeed, ABSL will focus on the successful delivery of Level 1-3. Further, we aim will conduct radical profiling and promotion of our level 3-4 athletes to enhance their opportunities for higher honour selections. Therefore our NBL, NBC, WNBL, WBC athletes will be provided with strong support systems, credible advocacy and consistent networking and promotional opportunities throughout their career. Level 3 - Excel Representative Basketball and High Performance Development ABSL Excel focuses on the high performance talent identification, selection and performance of Regional Representative athletes. Those athletes identified as the Top 20 athletes in their respective rep grades will be provided opportunities for high performance development through the following mechanisms: 3 ABSL High Performance Academy Programme U17s - U23s ABSL have developed a HP programme with a specific focus to provide sports science, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, health and nutrition, lifestyle

4

Level 2 - Explore Basketball Development 5

Secondary School Explore aims to provide advanced basketball development and playing opportunities for Secondary School students by providing competitive opportunities across the Greater Auckland region. The focus promotes the delivery of the Greater Auckland Secondary Schools Championship. Level 1 - Experience An introduction to the basic fundamentals of basketball Club Experience aims to provide basic knowledge and skills development opportunities for club members (including Junior and Phoenix Academy athletes). The focus promotes the delivery of basketball through Club based coaching, teaching and playing experiences. *Phoenix Academy is a subsidiary of the ABSL Representative Programme. Those athletes that are not selected in the Top 20 Rep Programme automatically enter Phoenix Academy. These athletes participate in (Club based) Phoenix Academy trainings during Term 2 and Term 3 and then compete in the Phoenix League during Term 1 and Term 4. Athletes will be supported to grow and develop and may be selected to replace a Top 20 athlete at any stage throughout the Rep season. Secondary School Experience aims to provide skills development and playing opportunities for Secondary School students. The focus promotes the delivery of basketball through School and Club based coaching, teaching and playing experiences. Primary School Experience aims to provide basic knowledge and skills development opportunities for Primary School students. The focus promotes the delivery of basketball through School and Club based coaching, teaching and playing experiences: 6

Level 1 - Experience An introduction to the basic fundamentals of basketball ABSL Experience Strategy ABSL s primary role across the Experience level is to work closely with schools and clubs to build capacity. The goal is to empower schools and clubs to deliver basketball opportunities within their local region. Auckland schools are divided into several cluster areas, with each cluster consisting of approximately 10-15 schools. Therefore our focus is to align one cluster of schools with an ABSL Club that is situated within the relevant cluster area. This way we can enable an athlete pathway that connects right across our core offerings. 7

8

ABSL Experience Strategy (Continued) Key Benefits The Cluster is coordinated by a Community Sports Advisor (funded by Sport Auckland) ABSL delivers Kiwihoops within Tamaki Cluster schools (funded by Kiwisport) Sunz delivers Club Nights and Homework Hubs (co-funded by ABSL*) Students participate in an Interschool Tournament (Delivered by Tamaki College/Sunz) Sunz teams participate in ABSL Run & Gun Tournament every term *Hillary Commission Legacy Funding acquired by ABSL Key Outcomes Strong ABSL brand awareness across all targeted cluster areas Quality fundamental instruction delivered at a critical intervention stage (primary age) Primary students are inspired to join their school team and /or local club Primary students progress to Secondary School with good basketball fundamentals Junior club members progress to Phoenix Academy level basketball with advanced skills and knowledge of the game Increased access to community facilities Increased participation in sport, recreation and health initiatives Experience Sustainability Plan The long term objective is to increase school and club capacity to deliver opportunities independent from ABSL. This will in turn increase opportunities for clubs to generate revenue through membership and league subscriptions to support club operations. ABSL will then be in a greater position to provide regional events, Projects and Programmes to support Clubs and School from the top down. 9

Club Development Strategy - Coaching Coaching at Club level can be difficult especially when you have varying levels of participating athletes. Age and Ability do not often go hand in hand, so it s important that coaches can adapt swiftly and offer age and ability appropriate sessions that will inspire participants to want to continue their journey each week. We have prepared a basic overview of how club coaches might progress through a series of developmental sessions that are based on the Basketball New Zealand Kiwihoops Coaching Framework. The Kiwihoops framework is what ABSL Community Coaches teach during our Kiwisport funded programmes that we deliver in schools across Auckland. The framework can be used as a guide to inform what to teach depending on the age and ability of your participants. Remember, the age reference (Eg. Bounce Year 1 and Year 2) can also be applied to older participants if they are new to the game or perhaps you feel The Basics are necessary before advancing. So please, be flexible to the needs of your community. There are four progressions in the club development strategy: Bounce Mini Pro All-Star Each progression is described in greater detail below. Please note we have also provided a spreadsheet resource with 37 sessions that are aligned to each progression. Our Recommendation is to use the templates provided in the Spreadsheet. It would be advantageous to teach the same session twice in one week if possible before moving on to the next session. Again, you may find that splitting participants into age and ability groups may be required, so it is suggested that you prepare by printing off the session plan and having these available for your volunteers to deliver during club training nights. As the club grows and the skill levels even out, you can look to work more closely with the older age groups to prepare them for Phoneix League and Representative Honours. 10

NON-NEGOTIABLES Non-negotiable 1 - Multi-skilled players Every player, regardless of their size or position needs to develop the ability to pass, dribble and shoot the ball from the interior, mid-range and perimeter as well as defend these positions in the half court and full court. Non-negotiable 2 - Both hands, both feet, both sides of the court Player needs to be able to pass, dribble and shoot the ball on the interior with either hand. They should be able to pivot on either foot to shoot the ball and move equally as well to the left or right defensively. Non-negotiable 3 Catch feet in the air ready to score Every time players catch the ball they should be a position to score (shoot, pass or dribble). Catch with feet in the air will allow players to prepare to score before they catch. Non-negotiable 4 - Ball down, body down, eyes up When on offence players must operate in an offensive stance at all time, crucially players must keep the ball and their body down while maintaining vision on the two corners of the court so that they can see their team mates and the defence. Non-negotiable 5 Always in defensive stance low and wide, hands carried, see both When on defence players must operate in a defensive stance at all times regardless if they are on or off the ball. Player should be in a low wide stance, with their hands carried and keeping vision on both the ball and their man. Non-negotiable 6 - Ability to shoot the ball All players, regardless of their position must be able to shoot the ball from the perimeter, mid-range and the interior. This includes scoring in a postup situation and shooting the ball from the mid-range of the dribble. Non-negotiable 7 - Rebounding Responsibilities (While the ball is in the air) Offence - triangle, long rebound and safety Defence - box out (create space, make contact, go get the ball) 13
