GAME 5 (2-2) HOME GAME 5 (2-2) TONIGHT'S BROADCASTS FSFL WINZ (940 AM) WAQI (710 AM) FISH BITES Right-hander Trevor Richards will be making his Major League debut tonight in the first of two games against the visiting Boston Red Sox. He will face off against LHP Brian Johnson, who is making his first career start and appearance against the Marlins, and just the seventh start of his young career. This is the final series of Miami's season-opening homestand; the Marlins split a four-game set against the Chicago Cubs, with two of the four going into extra innings. Miami came into the 2018 season with 12 players making their first Opening Day roster. This past offseason also concluded a franchise makeover that saw 27 new players join the system via trade acquisition, a process that started with the Marlins trading for OF and 2017 Southern League batting champion Braxton Lee from Tampa Bay last June. YESTERDAY VS. CUBS Despite being held without a hit over the first four innings, Miami came away with a 6-0 win over the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Chicago managed six hits through its first five frames, and had runners in scoring position in four of those innings. In Miami's half of the fifth, Cameron Maybin doubled to lead things off, then scored on Chad Wallach's single to right. After the second out was recorded on a sacrifice bunt, the next three batters reached base via hit or walk. With the base loaded, Brian Anderson doubled a ball into the right field gap to score three runs, but was erased trying to stretch it into a triple. Miami scored its final run in the sixth on a wild pitch. Wallach was the hero of the game, going 2x3 with a double and the game-winning RBI. Anderson, who went 1x3 with a double and three RBI, extended his hitting streak to four games. Dillon Peters recorded the second win of his career after allowing just six hits and a walk over 6.0 innings. TODAY'S TRANSACTION The Marlins today designated Severino González for assignment and selected the contract of Trevor Richards (#63), who will be making his Major League debut tonight. After signing with Miami as a Minor League free agent on July 2, 2016, Richards has posted a 14-14 record with a 2.52 ERA (200.1/56) in 38 career MiLB appearances (34 starts). He has surrendered just 10 home runs as a professional and issued just 46 walks, while striking out 211 for a 9.47 SO/9 ratio. Named Miami's Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season after going 12-11 with a 2.53 ERA (146.0/41) in 27 appearances (25 starts). VS. RED SOX These two clubs split their last season series, 2-2, in 2015, with both teams sweeping two-game sets at their home ballparks. The last series between these two was on August 11-12, 2015 at Marlins Park, when Miami came away with 5-4 and 14-6 victories. The Marlins are 6-8 all-time at home against the Red Sox (3-2 at Marlins Park), but trail the overall series, 12-22. INTERLEAGUE NOTES The Marlins went 9-11 in Interleague Play last season, their best record against the American League since going 13-7 in 2014. Miami has an overall record of 184-186 against the AL all-time, the fourth-best record among all National League teams. The Mets are on top with a 185-177 record (.511), and are followed by the Cardinals (170-165;.507), and Cubs (167-168;.499). Miami's 184 wins are third to only the Washington (186) and the Mets in the NL. Miami's opponent tonight, the Boston Red Sox, leads all Major League teams since the start of Interleague Play in wins (227) and winning percentage (.593). Miami leads all National League teams in hits (3,358), doubles (672), runs scored (1,711) and RBI (1,623) since Interleague Play began. STICKIN' IT TO SOUTHPAWS With Miami in the middle of a three-game stretch facing left-handed starters, here is a look at how the Marlins have fared against southpaws. Since 2010, the team has posted a.256 average against lefties, which ranks fourth among all National League clubs. Colorado leads with a.268 mark, followed by Washington (.257) and San Francisco (.257). Garrett Cooper leads all Marlins hitters in career average against lefties with a.348 mark (8x23). He is followed by Starlin Castro (.294; 326x1108) and Brian Anderson (.270; 10x37). SPEAKING OF SOUTHPAWS In the first four games of this season, Miami's four left-handed pitchers have combined to allow just one run over 19.2 innings pitched (0.45 ERA); Jarlin García has tossed 6.0 innings, Dillon Peters 6.0 innings, Caleb Smith 5.1 innings and Chris O'Grady 2.1 innings. Miami's left-handed pitchers have tossed the second-most of any team in the Majors (Dodgers-23.0), and have tied for the fewest total runs allowed of any team with 10.0-or-more innings from their left-handers (also Boston, the Dodgers, and Oakland). The Dodgers group of Alex Wood, Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill, Scott Alexander, and Tony Cingrani has allowed just one run over 23.0 frames. TOUGH TEST Based on 2017 records, Miami will have the sixth-toughest schedule in the Majors over the course of March/April, as their opponents had a combined.519 winning percentage last season. In the coming month, the Marlins will face Boston, Philadelphia, the Mets, Pittsburgh, the Yankees, Milwaukee, the Dodgers, and Colorado. However, from May through September, the Marlins have the third-easiest schedule, with opponents combining on a.485 record. - Stats LLC STARLIN IS DARLIN' Starlin Castro, who turns 28 on May 7, has amassed 1,285 career hits. Among players whose careers started in 1990 or later, his hit total is the sixth-most hits of any player prior to his 28th birthday. Alex Rodriguez led all with 1,467, and he was followed by Miguel Cabrera (1,417), Albert Pujols (1,344), Ivan Rodriguez (1,333), and Derek Jeter (1,294). Since 2010, Castro ranks 10th among active players in total hits, behind leader Robinson Cano (1,507). - Stats LLC 100 GRAND BOSTON RED SOX (3-1) LHP BRIAN JOHNSON (2-0, 4.33 IN 2017) vs. MIAMI MARLINS (2-2) TREVOR RICHARDS (MLB DEBUT) MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FL MONDAY, APRIL 2, 2018 7:10 P.M.
