Sporting Profile Issue 17: Jones PE Teachers Sporting Profile -Each week we would like to share with you what your teachers have been doing outside school: Mr Jones Since as far back as I can remember I have enjoyed being active and involved in sport. Sport was a huge part of school life, very similar to Maiden Erlegh, and being a welsh school the sport of choice was Rugby. Much of my school life was playing rugby, however it wasn t my favourite sport. In fact, I found a huge passion for Hockey. I played Hockey for the House and represented the school in local and national championships. Moving away to University was great fun for me, I was able to get out of the small village life of Wales and during fresher s week took the opportunity to sign up to every sports club going. I tried various sports and martial arts from Polo, Ultimate Frisbee, Judo and Karate. However one sport in particular took my fancy, Rowing. It turned out I quite like early mornings and the amazing feeling of being free as you row on a river as the sun rises. To this day I still row and enjoy every minute of it. I have had the opportunity to represent both my University and Reading at various competitions and even won a few over the years. Present- I still row for Reading Rowing Club as part of the senior mens squad, but split my time between training and rowing myself and coaching our development squad. Coaching is a great opportunity to share my passion and love for the sport and share my knowledge and top tips along the way. Highlight: You never forget the wins and the trophies but sometimes the best moments are the ones that don t go to plan but you learn the most from. My first ever rowing race was a long 5K head race and it was a disaster. However, my mates and I had the most amazing time, we loved every second of it and felt a huge sense of achievement when we completed it. Also, coaching our women s development squad last year was a highlight as by the end of the season the entire squad had de noviced and won a race or two. Lowlight: I ll never forget my first sculling race, I lost by balance at the start of the race and capsized the boat, going for a swim in the river and losing the race. Sporting Heroes: Pete Reed A great motivational rower and GB Olympian who proves that through hard work and determination you can succeed. Next issue it will be Miss Teale s sporting profile. 10

GREEN PARK CHALLENGE & READING HALF MARATHON Last year we had a record number of Maiden Erlegh students take part in the Green Park Challenge and this year we want to get even more involved! The Green Park Challenge is a 3km running event that takes place the same morning as the Reading Half Marathon. This year s event takes place on Sunday 18 th March 2018. It costs 10 to enter. Each entrant will receive a free race t shirt, finishers medal, water bottle and goody bag. Every finisher automatically represents their school and schools win prizes based on how their students finish. But more importantly it gets young people to love running and encourages a physically active lifestyle. We would love for as many of you to be involved as possible! You can sign up here: www.readinghalfmarathon.com For our older students who are 17 by the 18 th March, why not really challenge yourself and attempt the Reading Half Marathon? This really is one to tick off the bucket list and is a fantastic course for a first timer (the fastest half marathon in the UK in 2016). If you decide to sign up, fantastic, let Mr Pringle know so that we can keep track of all Maiden Erlegh students taking part. www.readinghalfmarathon.com 12

RACE FOR LIFE 2018 Next summer, we will once again have a Maiden Erlegh team take part in the Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research. We want an even bigger team than last year. Please do let us know if you sign up, so that we can add you to our Maiden Erlegh team (pn@maidenerleghschool.co.uk). Next year s event is being held at Prospect Park on Sunday 18 th July 2018. You can sign up now for this Race for Life event and get 5 off adult 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy entry!
