Getting Started It s a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning to walk if you suffer from any medical conditions or have health worries. Start slowly as you would with any exercise programme and increase the level and distance once you feel comfortable. Remember to walk slowly for five minutes to warm up. Stretch to prevent injury and increase flexibility. > Wear light, comfortable clothing in the summer and warm, waterproof clothing in the winter. > Choose well-fitting, cushion-soled shoes, preferably with adequate grip on the soles. > Remember sunscreen, hat and fluids to drink. For more ideas on how to get started visit the Starting Out Walking section on the Active Canterbury website. Advantages of walking with others Studies show walking with others can greatly improve the likelihood that you ll stick with it. This can be either by taking part in a group or by having a walking partner. Joining one of the groups listed in this booklet is a great idea. It will help keep you motivated and get you linked in with an established group of regular walkers. Alternatively you could consider starting your own group. It s not difficult and you can find help and resources at: www.activecanterbury.org.nz Your local Christchurch City Council Community Recreation Advisor is also available to help on 941 8999. Join a group, start a new one, or find a buddy and experience the benefits of walking with others today. While every effort has been made to ensure the information in this brochure is correct at the time of printing, Christchurch City Council accepts no responsibility for the accuracy or otherwise of the details in this publication.
