11 Activ8 Walk Leader Profiles The Activ8 Walking Team now consists of over 30 Volunteer Walk Leaders and we are proud to profile 3 of them in this edition of the walks timetable. Why did you become a walk leader? I retired from a full-time job and thought it would be a good way to keep fit and help others to do the same. What do you enjoy most about being a walk leader? Meeting all the other walkers. Most memorable experience on a health walk? More at the end of the walk. all those cakes!! Name: Graham Kerr Walk Leader since: 2012 Birthplace: Lincoln Walks: Various If you could invite any two people from any period in time to your very own tea party, who would they be? Prince Peter Kropotkin, a 19 th century Geographer, writer and anarchist and Brian Clough. What is your quote to live by? Something Pavarotti said, One of the nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever we are doing and devote our attention to eating. Name: Karen Wood Walk Leader since: 2012 Birthplace: Adelaide, Australia Walks: Branston, Heighington, Arboretum and others Why did you become a walk leader? I retired early from work and was looking after my Dad and then my Mum (sadly they have now both passed away) so I wanted something to do that was completely separate from caring. I have always done a lot of walking so I started coming along to the walks on a Monday in Branston and after a little while I was asked if I would like to train as a walk leader. What do you enjoy most about being a walk leader? I love that we meet lots of new people and have made lots of friends. It's great to catch up with them every week and to see new walkers getting the walking bug! Most memorable experience on a health walk? Some of the best walks have been with people who really know the area of the walk. There is a lady that comes regularly to Branston who tells stories about the village when she was a little girl. If you could invite any two people from any period in time to your very own tea party, who would they be? I would invite Eleanor of Castlle (she was the wife of Edward I - She died near Lincoln in 1190 and her husband built 12 monuments to her, one at every place her funeral procession rested overnight on its way back to London). I would ask her about her life with Edward to see if they did genuinely love each other. I would also invite King John to see if he is as really as bad a character as the story of the Magna Carta suggests. What is your quote to live by? "feel the fear and do it anyway" Why did you become a walk leader? I have always loved and appreciated health benefits of walking. In my case walking and high mountains walking. Spreading this knowledge and giving a good example was probably the main reason for taking on leadership with my local Walking for Health group. What do you enjoy most about being a walk leader? To be able to give something back to others. Enthusiasm, perseverance (English weather!), consistency. To work towards variety of walks and receive personal satisfaction from good feedback. Most memorable experience on a health walk? The opportunity to use my first aid skills, when I rushed to the attendance of a fallen walker. All finished well! Name: Lydia Goodale Walk Leader since: 2014 Birthplace: Cracow, Poland Walks: Welton If you could invite any two people from any period in time to your very own tea party, who would they be? Two? I can t possibly discriminate against the others. It would have to be everyone willing from my walking group!!! What is your quote to live by? I walk to live longer and better life.
