HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF) The HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF) has been developed in line with the requirements of the HSE, HSG 179: Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools. This Ofqual accredited qualification is valid for two years and has equal standing with other pool lifeguard qualifications on the market. The qualification is also on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF) and the unit was written by the stakeholders in the market and Skills Active, the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being. This qualification provides the necessary skills and knowledge for learners who wish to be employed as pool lifeguards. HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding Requalification (QCF) The HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF) is valid for two years and can be kept up-to-date with regular on-going training carried out by an approved training provider. When the qualification is due to expire, lifeguards are required to undertake requalification to extend the qualification for another two years. This involves a renewal assessment and can be completed providing there is a signed record of regular onsite training taking place, with a minimum of 20 hours contact time. Alternatively, if the renewal criteria are not met, the full course and assessment has to be completed Why deliver these qualifications? There are numerous benefits of choosing HABC as your Awarding Organisation for pool lifeguarding. These are as follows: FREE registration to become an HABC Approved Centre no annual membership subscriptions unbeatable prices centre registration for individual tutors as well as organisations a maximum 7 working day certification turnaround (an average of 4 working days) a dedicated account manager the ability to add first aid qualifications to the pool lifeguard candidate package over 120 other qualifications to choose from HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF): The Essential Guide 3

How can I become a Trainer/Assessor to deliver this qualification? HABC require that in order to become a nominated pool lifeguard tutor/assessor you must: hold a recognised teaching qualification or have experience in delivering educational courses (see important note below) hold a recognised and current pool lifeguarding qualification have experience in this area or appropriate equivalent* attend a FREE HABC pool lifeguard conversion/ orientation day. Important Note: Centres who are seeking approval only for tutors and assessors who have not previously delivered and/ or assessed pool lifeguard qualifications (e.g. do not hold a RLSS or STA tutor qualification) will require an initial approval visit from HABC. This visit will be conducted on your first course by HABC personnel. *Recognised equivalents include a valid RLSS trainer/assessor qualification OR an STA National Aquatic Rescue Standard (NARS) tutor/examiner qualification. Following attendance on a FREE HABC Conversion day, tutors can be attached to other HABC Centres to train and assess this award or can set up their own centre. It is recommended that tutors and assessors who have not previously delivered and/or assessed pool lifeguard qualifications are shadowed by experienced T/A s from the same centre in their first course and first assessment. As stated above if there is no experienced T/A s at that Centre, they will require an initial approval visit from HABC on their first course. My current lifeguards are qualified through the RLSS or the STA. When their qualification expires, can they switch to the HABC qualification? Yes. A qualified RLSS or STA Pool Lifeguard can re-qualify using the HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding Requalification (QCF).To do so, lifeguards are required to document 20 hours of on-going training prior to re-qualifying. This training must include the key technical differences between the HABC qualification and the one previously held by the learner. These key technical differences are highlighted to all trainers/assessors on the conversion days and must be passed onto the lifeguards in the on-going training. Learners must know the key technical differences within our qualification and this must be included within their 20 hours of on-going training. We do not specify a time frame as this may vary with each learner. What funding is available? Supported by Skills Active, the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure, the HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF) is currently eligible for funding. Funding is distributed by the Young People s Learning Agency for 16-18 learners www.ypla.gov.uk and the Skills Funding Agency for 19+ learners www.skillsfundingagency.bis.gov.uk The LARA (Learner Aims Reference Application) holds funding information for accredited qualifications. The HABC qualification title is the Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF) and the learning aim reference number is 60032741. 4 HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF): The Essential Guide

HABC Clients Delivering Pool Lifeguarding North Country Leisure gets active with HABC Each week new centres register to deliver our new Pool Lifeguarding qualification. Centres that have registered and converted over to HABC include large leisure organisations, leisure trusts, councils, caravan parks, waterparks and training providers. These are not just throughout the UK but around the world with approved centres also in Dubai, Malta and Cyprus. We recently welcomed North Country Leisure (NCL) as an approved HABC Centre. NCL is a charity and a company limited by guarantee. It was established in 1998 for the benefit of the community, with the aim of offering excellent sports and leisure for all. NCL works extremely closely with Northumberland County Council, Copeland Borough Council and Eden District Council and is an accredited training provider of sport and leisure courses. Training Courses that NCL currently offer include Pool Lifeguarding, First Aid and Food Hygiene. Speaking on the move to HABC for Pool Lifeguarding, Shirley Brown (Training Manager) at NCL offered the following comments: When we first heard that HABC was launching a Pool Lifeguarding qualification, we felt this would be a great opportunity to make significant cost savings by moving over to them. However, after going through a period of due diligence and reviewing all aspects of their qualification package, as well as hosting conversion days for our trainers, we ve realised there are numerous benefits of moving across. Not only is the qualification the most cost-effective on the market, but the supporting training materials are of the high quality we ve come to expect from Highfield, certification time is extremely quick and we feel we re being listened to by our HABC Account Manager. As the Training Manager, having a dedicated account manager, to whom we direct all queries, makes communication friendly, straightforward and simple, and the HABC response time to queries and certification is very impressive. We have now converted all of our trainers to be HABC Pool Lifeguard tutors and are transferring all of our 190 lifeguards over to the HABC Award as they become due to re-qualify. I m pleased to say that all new lifeguards will now be trained the HABC way. With our market share continuing to grow as a result of organisations such as NCL joining us, we aim to become the leading awarding organisation for Pool Lifeguarding qualifications in 2013. 10 HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (QCF): The Essential Guide
