STEWARDS REPORT Australian Turf Club WARWICK FARM RACECOURSE Wednesday, 9 March 2016 Weather: Fine Track: Good (3) Rail: +3m Penetrometer: 4.7 STEWARDS: M F Van Gestel (Chairman), G T Rudolph, R W Livingstone, T P Moxon and cadets T A McDonald, J A Shultz and C R Manley (alm) Supplementary Reports: ROYAL RANDWICK: Saturday, 5 March 2015 RACE 3: Girvan Waugh Randwick City Stakes (Listed) 2000m Beyond Thankful trainer Mr C Waller stated that Beyond Thankful had pulled up well and would try and ride him more conservatively at its next start. RACE 1 TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap 1100m Regenesis change of tactics to be ridden quieter; settled off pace. Regenesis, leaving the 1000m, was steadied when crowded between Crafty Cop and Grincheux, both which shifted ground. Hostwin Legend was slow to begin. Hostwin Legend overraced in the early stages and laid out from the 600m and rounding the home turn. When questioned, K McEvoy stated his intention was to be in a forward position as the colt had shown speed in its barrier trial. He added that Hostwin Legend was standing awkwardly in the gates and consequently missed the start and although he tried to ride forward, he was quickly crossed by Grincheux, which resulted in his mount settling towards the rear of the field. He added that the colt was then inclined to lay out making the home turn and raced greenly in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Grincheux laid out in the early part of the straight after being placed under pressure and raced greenly thereafter. Crafty Cop laid out under pressure and approaching the winning post, shifted out. RACE 2 Cellarbrations Handicap 1200m To Be Sure jumped awkwardly and ran out. Kitty Leroy blundered on jumping Dixie Chick was slow to begin. Bowie s Babe was slow to begin. Chetwood J McDonald stated the gelding travelled comfortably in the lead and although the tempo was genuine, his mount travelled well within itself. He added that after being urged along, making the home turn, Chetwood then, on entering the straight, commenced to lay in and came under pressure near the 200m. J McDonald stated that although headed inside the 150m mark, he was not too disappointed with the effort as in his view, having to control the tempo under a big weight of 61kgs was not to the gelding s advantage. A post race veterinary examination revealed a poor post race recovery. Stable representative D Beadman stated that with the race being run in under.5 of a second outside of the longstanding track record, he was pleased with the performance of Chetwood given that the gelding led under his top weight of 61kgs and was only headed approaching the 100m mark.
Dark Steel B Shinn stated that the colt was able to take up a position outside the leader Chetwood without being unduly pressured in the early stages. He added that from the 600m, he was obliged to ride his mount along and after making the home turn awkwardly, weakened in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed a poor post race recovery. Co-trainer Mr Paul Snowden stated that the colt, which was having its first run for the stable, was racing with blinkers off today, but in his view, was not suited by having to race outside the early leader, Chetwood, in a genuinely run event. Mr Snowden added that it will now be the intention to step Dark Steel up in distance at its next race start where it could travel in a forward position in a more moderate tempo. Mr Snowden undertook to report back on the progress of Dark Steel subsequent to the race. RACE 3 Bowermans Office Furniture Handicap 1000m Wooden Take It approaching the 150m was hampered and taken wider when Painte shifted out abruptly under pressure. Just Like Stratum was slow to begin. Rider J Collett stated that although caught three wide, he was able to find cover on the gelding for the majority of the event, but his mount was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Vandyke stated he was not too disappointed as the horse was caught three wide and would derive benefit from today's performance. Mr Vandyke undertook to report back on the progress of Just Like Stratum subsequent to the race. Lyric was slow to begin. I m Usain jumped awkwardly and over the final 50m, raced in restricted room to the outside of Painte, which resulted in its rider App A Adkins not being able to fully test his mount with the whip. Remunerator was held up until near the 150m. Frankiefourfingers overraced in the early and middle stages. RACE 4 TAB Rewards Handicap 1300m Star Wars was slow to begin and was held up rounding the home turn. App T Wolfgram was reprimanded for using the whip on consecutive occasions prior to the 100m. Top Striker jumped awkwardly. Raijinz for a short distance approaching the 1100m, was racing in restricted room to the inside of Top Striker, which was inclined to lay in. A post race veterinary examination of Raijinz, which weakened in the straight, revealed no abnormalities. Roman Odyssey when caught wide without cover, was inclined to overrace in the middle stages. Cosmic Cameo near the 1200m was steadied when crowded by Top Striker, which after initially being taken wide by Art Nouveau (App J Innes Jr), shifted in away from that runner. App Innes was reprimanded and advised that he should ensure he leaves sufficient room to runners to his inside. When questioned regarding the gelding settling further back in the field today, App N Heywood stated that with stepping up to 1300m, he was instructed to ride his mount where comfortable, anticipating to be midfield. He added that in his view, Cosmic Cameo raced disappointingly and did not run out a strong 1300m. Stable representative Mr G Miles stated that the intention had been to be in the first four or five runners, however, Cosmic Cameo got further back than had been anticipated by the stable. Mr Miles stated that in the stable s opinion the gelding raced disappointingly today and will now be spelled. Mr Miles was told if the stable intended to change tactics significantly from its previous start then they would be expected to notify the Stewards of that change.
Brewery App L Grace stated that the gelding travelled comfortably in the lead, but when asked to quicken in the straight, gave ground and was most disappointing. App Grace could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Ryan stated that in his view, Brewery is better suited when being able to set a genuine tempo in front. Today when App L Grace steadied the pace in the middle stages, Brewery was inclined to race a little keenly. He added that Brewery had pleased the stable since its first up win and undertook to report back to the Stewards on the condition of the gelding subsequent to the race. RACE 5 All Too Hard Handicap 1600m Encosta Line change of tactics to be ridden quieter; settled midfield. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, App R Hutchings stated the gelding travelled well on the run, but when placed under pressure making the home turn, he felt something was amiss with the gelding's action and therefore he did not test his mount in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller advised that Encosta Line had pleased the stable since its first up run. Mr Waller was asked to provide a veterinary clearance prior to Encosta Line racing again. Manhattan Sun was slow to begin. Happy Hannah was slow to begin. Falkenberg was bumped at the start and shifted out. Moher after being crossed by Manhattan Sun, got its head up and overraced for a short distance approaching the first turn near the 1000m. Satirical Dame laid out under pressure in the straight and could not be fully tested in the run to the finish Moonlight Trance G Schofield stated that the filly was stirred up in its preliminary, but it was able to take up a position behind the leader where it travelled comfortably. He added that in his view Moonlight Trance may not have run out a strong 1400m. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. RACE 6 Schweppes Handicap 1300m Love s A Fantasy change of tactics to be ridden more quietly; settled well back. Loves A Fantasy was slow to begin. Lycia was held up rounding the home turn. G Schofield, rider of Yattama, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift in at the 250m when not clear of Lycia, which had to be checked and lost its running and was further taken in, crowding the running of Typecast, which had to be checked when taken in towards Bells Of War. G Schofield's licence to ride in racing was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 13 March 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 20 March 2016 on which day he may ride again. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account his guilty plea, his good record in the last 12 months in relation to careless riding as well as the Golden Slipper race meeting that G Schofield will forgo during the suspension. Typecast was checked when crowded passing the 200m and was accidentally struck over the head with the whip of App W Costin, rider of Bells Of War. A post race veterinary examination revealed Typecast to have dislodged a tooth. Bells Of War had some difficulty obtaining clear running leaving the 200m. Ravi was held up in the early part of the straight and for some distance approaching the 250m mark shifted out and made contact with Tremezzina as it obtained clear running to the outside of Francais.
RACE 7 TAB.Com.Au Handicap 1600m Dubaiinstyle trainer Mr C Waller was fined $100 for the late withdrawal of Dubaiinstyle at 7.37am when it was established by Stewards that the colt, which was a dual acceptor, had not been withdrawn by the prescribed time. Multifacets change of tactics to be ridden quieter; settled well back. Nazca change of tactics to be ridden more forward; settled back. Montiro laid in under pressure when weakening in the straight.
