R H S R U G B Y N E W S L E T T E R I S S U E 7 7 : 2 7 M A Y 2015 UC CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND FIVE: 1 st XV v Lincoln High School The midweek encounter between two Canterbury Country high schools was always going to be a close encounter. Rangiora had the wind advantage in the first half but it was Lincoln who held territorial advantage for the early stages. However when the visitors used the wind to gain field position, two slick backline plays saw Travel Tuaputa and Bailey Mechen beat their opposites out wide to score tries. With one Patrick McCallum conversion, Rangiora turned around to play into the stiff breeze with just a 12-3 lead. Rangiora s slow reaction to the referee s calls, plus Lincoln s conservative tactics, gifted two more penalties to the home team over the next twenty minutes. Many handling errors hindered Rangiora s tactic to control possession and it wasn t until the backline chanced its arm, did the points come again. With just a three point lead and ten minutes remaining, to score as they did into a head wind, and with one player in the bin, showed the coaches and supporters this side does have a determined character. Matt Deaker scored after Rangiora ran themselves close to the opposition line and the forwards pick n go broke the Lincoln defense. Further attacking play had the visitors on attack again soon after. Good support play rewarded Louis James with a try under the posts after McCallum broke through the inside channel. Unfortunately Rangiora relaxed to allow Lincoln to come back and cross their line in the last play of the match. This was disappointing after they had battled to keep Lincoln out on many previous occasions. The 24-14 score rewarded the winner s stronger finish. Harley Robinson continued his good form to be awarded Player of the Day. Halfback, Jordy Gray cleared the ball well for his backline. The finishing of outside backs, Tuaputa, Mechen and Jared Cox turned limited opportunities into tries in the first half.
Oscar Howat and George Gardner, in the unfamiliar openside position, tackled well. Midfield pair, Rhys Smith and Ben Wicksteed, were a brick wall for the opponent s backline. This good defense was necessary before the attacking moves could open up holes to produce the points.
