Andreas Küttel University of Southern Denmark
Ladies seminar FIS Congress Barcelona 2014 «After the sports career» Andreas Küttel, akuttel@health.sdu.dk
My Background Ski jumping World Cup Tour 1995-2011 Participated at 8 World Championships and 3 Olympics FIS Athlete commission 2009-2011 Sport studies at ETH Zurich with a MSc in 2005 I live in Denmark with my wife and my 4 year old son Began with the doctoral research project last October at the Southern University of Denmark (Odense)
Overview Career transitions in sport Reasons for athletic retirement Consequences of the transition out of elite sport Career Programs for athletes Life after elite sport Practical implications My research project
Athletic career model (Wylleman et al. 2004)
Reasons of athletic retirement
Reasons of athletic retirement (Engel et al. 2014) Vocational reasons (opportunity for a good job) 67% Performance- related reasons 56% Health- related reasons 50% Environment-related reasons (conflict with coach) 40% Family- related reasons 5% (Higher for women) Financial- related reasons 5% Voluntary vs. involuntary Locus of control is important! planned vs. unplanned
What facilitates a successful transition? Pre-retirement planning -> plans for life after elitesport Personality/ (Athletic-) Identity and Coping- strategies Social support and environment (family, coaches, teammates) Education/ previous working experience Network Awarness and motivation to transfer skills to the new role
Transferable skills
Athlete Career Programs Designed to develop social, eductional, and work-related skills in elite athletes Topics: Counselling Education management (Dual Career) Career management (discuss opportunities in sport or in other fields) Job application skills/ job placement Social/ networking skills Pro-active retirement training
Life after the elite sport career 90% of the retired Swiss athletes judge their health as good/ really good Over 95 % are happy or really happy with their life situation 85 % of the former athletes live in a stable relationship and 25% are married and have children Only 3% are without a job 2014) (Engel et al.
Medals in sport- success in business? Former top-performance athletes display generally higher educational certificates and professional positions than the general population Many former athletes reach high positions in different fields despite their delayed start in joblife Success (and popularity) in sport helps especially in positions related to sport Two sides of the medal
Different types- different fitness for use Kollege Spitzensportler. Chancen für Wirtschaft und Athleten (Schmidt et al. 2013) Type 1 (Maverick/ Individualist): high discipline, low social competence/ Individual sport/ specialized expert (27%) Type 2 (Fighter): dominant, low interest in cooperation/ low education/ interims- manager (16%) Type 3 (Teamplayer): lower discipline and dominance/ high cooperation/ female team players/ assistant of the CEO (28%) Type 4 (Allrounder): high discipline and performance orientation, high social competence/ very high selfconfidence (Ex- Captains) / higher management positions (29%)
Practical implications For athletes Actively search for dual career opportunities Raise awareness of your situation among business- and educational institution Train situative behavior Establish and use the contacts from the business world For employers Build in flexibility in the assessment process Watch out for insecure overachievers Search for hidden strength and assets in former elite athletes
My research Study about retired elite athletes in Denmark, Poland and Switzerland Over 30 different federations involved Influence of the support from the national sport system (help for dual career, (financial-) athlete support, availability for career assistance services) on the transition out of sport and the life after elite sport Which skills from sport are considered most helpful in the current (job-)situation? Differences between cultures and subcultures
