Adapted Softball Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mound Westonka captures 10th title in PI; St. Cloud Area wins CI championship At the 2017 state tournament, a traditional champion returned to the winner s circle and a tournament newcomer experienced a title-winning season for the first time. Longtime power Robbinsdale/Hopkins/ Mound Westonka won the PI Division for a record 10th time following a 10-7 title victory over Anoka-Hennepin. It was the first championship for the Robins since 2014 when they won the PI title for the sixth consecutive season. Robbinsdale won one additional title in 1995. In the CI Division, St. Cloud Area made its first state tournament trip a memorable one with a 10-7 victory over Burnsville/ Farmington/Lakeville in the championship game. CI Division St. Cloud Area began playing adapted softball in 2007 and participated for three seasons. But the program was discontinued from 2010-16. It was revived for the 2017 season and the end result sent euphoria through the team s bench and fans. The Sluggers had plenty of offense, but needed stellar defense, too, to preserve their first state title. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville threatening, St. Cloud sophomore Brian Jones made a shoestring catch of a line drive and then recorded an out at third base before the runner could tag up. Moments later, eighth-grader Nick Goff ended the game with a leaping grab against the curtain. This was the first time an outstate team has won the CI title since the first tournament was held in 1994. Junior Dayton Wienjes had four hits and scored three runs for the Sluggers. Eighth-grader Natalya Rawley had a home run for the Blazing Cats. In the third-place game, Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville broke open a tight game with a five-run third inning en route to a 13-5 victory over Anoka-Hennepin. Junior Danziel Marshall had four hits and scored four runs for the Rams. In the consolation final, Osseo outlasted Chaska/Chanhassen/Prior Lake/Shakopee for a 14-13 win. Senior pitcher Jason Robins hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to clinch the victory for the Orioles. Junior Paige Faber scored four runs for Osseo. Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville qualified for a state championship berth with an 18-6 semifinal victory over Anoka-Hennepin. Junior CJ Weydert was 3-for-3 at the plate and hit a home run for the Blazing Cats. Ninth-grader Carlos Jackson also had three hits for Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville. St. Cloud Area forged its way to the championship with a 15-4 victory over Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville in the other semifinal. Nick Goff was 3-for-4 with a home run and eighth-grader Adam Marshal also had three hits for the Sluggers. PI Division It was the fourth meeting this season between program powers Robbinsdale/ Hopkins/Mound Westonka and Anoka- Hennepin when they played with a state championship at stake. Anoka-Hennepin held a 2-to-1 edge in those 2017 matchups. This time, the Robins raced to an 8-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, before hanging on as Anoka-Hennepin stormed back to try and derail them for the third time this season. Instead, the Robins pulled away with two timely runs in the top of the seventh inning. Their stout defense then retired the Mustangs in order in the bottom of the seventh. Eighth-grader Marcus Brady and junior Brendan Bosker-Elliott had RBI singles in the top of the seventh that helped clinch the victory for the Robins. They both finished with three hits apiece. Anoka-Hennepin scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to within 8-7. It was the 26th state championship for Robins coach Marcus Onsum, who has also built adapted athletics powers in soccer and floor hockey. At the beginning of the season, I figured we might be good enough to win the consolation final, at best, he said following the awards ceremony. Soon I could tell, though, that this team was going to accomplish so much more. They came together as a team and came up big when we needed them. This one is really special. In the third-place game, Rochester outlasted Dakota United for a 16-13 victory. Junior Calvin Gerdt, sophomore Jillian Stacy, and ninth-grader Dayne Bailey scored three runs each to send the Raiders to victory. Seventhgrader Samuel Gerten had four hits and scored four runs for Dakota United. In the consolation final, Osseo raced to a 14-1 victory over Mounds View/Irondale/ Roseville behind eighth-grader Kirby Continued on page 56 Brendan Bosker-Elliott of Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mound-Westonka had three hits, including an RBI single, to lead the Robins to their 10th PI championship. The Robins defeated Anoka-Hennepin 10-7 in the title game. MINNESOTA PREP PHOTO / MnPrepPhoto.com 50 Adapted Softball 2016-2017 YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK Minnesota State High School League
