RULES TO PARTICIAPTE IN THE STATE SHOOT IN SEPTEMBER 2017 1) You must have a minimum of 8 hours of wildlife education each year that you participate. 2) You must have at least 15 hours of on-line marksmanship and safety training for each participant (including basic safety, range rules, and etiquette plus marksmanship in scoring) in each event in which the participant competes for the first year. 3) In the case of.22, air rifle, air pistol and BB gun disciplines only, 15 hours total training of one discipline and 5 hours in each other related discipline (.22, air rifle, air pistol and/or BB gun). For example, in your first year you must complete 15 hours of training in air rifle, and if you are enrolled in BB gun also, you need to have 5 hours of training in that discipline as well. 4) After the initial training (your first year participating in that discipline), the participant must complete at least 8 hours of training every year after in each discipline he/she is to participate in each year. 5) You may only shoot 4 disciplines at the state match. (All air and.22 are counted as separate disciplines.) * These requirements are set by the State 4-H Shooting Sports Program. There are no exceptions to these rules, and if you are not able to complete the required hours in both Wildlife and On-line Training and Marksmanship, you will not be eligible to participate in the 4-H State Shoot in September. The 2017 Minnesota 4-H Shooting Sports and Wildlife Invitational will be held Sept. 8-10, 2017 in Fairmont, Minnesota, Martin County. 8
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is there a participation fee? Yes, due to the increasing cost of running the shooting sports program, there will be a fee of $10.00 per child this year with a maximum family fee of $20.00 This is payable to Wright County Extension. Do I have to buy a BB gun? Or can I bring my own BB gun? You do not have to buy a BB gun to participate. Wright County has a stock of guns available for the youth to use for the season. If you have a BB gun of your own, please bring it to the first practice and the coaches will look at it to see if it is an appropriate gun to use. (This includes air rifles and air pistols as well.) 4-H requires single shot BB guns, air rifles and air pistols be used both in practice and competition. How much does it cost to shoot any of the disciplines? (other than the participation fee) BB Gun, Air Rifle and Air Pistol: Your cost is zero and Wright County provides all of the ammunition and guns for the shooters to use. Trap: You must provide your own shot gun, ammo, and it costs $5.00 per round of trap shooting. Typically you will shoot 2 rounds per practice..22 Rifle: Wright County has.22 Target Rifles available to use, but you may bring your own rifle to use as well. We will have.22 ammunition you may purchase at the practices. Please see your coach if you have any questions. Wright County provides the targets. : You must provide your own bow, arrows (dozen) with target tips (field tips), a quiver, and an arm guard. There is no weekly cost to practice and Wright County provides the bales and targets. We may have some bows/arrows to use to try out the sport. Please see your coach if you have questions. Do I have to participate in the State Shoot, or can I just practice during the summer? It is not required to participate in the State Shoot in the fall, but highly encouraged. It is a way to showcase the skills that you have learned and a great way to meet other 4 H ers from around the state. Can my parents help coach? Your parents are very welcome to attend each practice with you and assist the 4-H Coaches where needed. In order to coach on-line, your parents will need to attend one of the coaching sessions that the State 4-H Extension office has each year. Please contact the Wright County extension office for more details. Do I have to have my firearm safety certificate to shoot? You only need your firearms safety certificate if you are shooting either of the powder-burn events which are Trap and.22 Rifle. This is a Wright County rule and there will be no exceptions. You are not required to have a firearms safety certificate if you are shooting archery, BB gun, air rifle or air pistol. 9
