Solo Dance Modified IJS Coaches Webinar

Agenda for the Webinar Things to keep in mind this season Free Dance Requirements for this season Short Dance Requirements for this season Basic principles of calling solo dance Technical requirements for each element Illegal Elements/Falls * A Q&A session will be held for each element and one at the end. * Items underlined mean a new rule for this year.

Things to keep in mind this season! This is the start of a two year trial and it will not be perfect! Be patient. We have worked hard to get this up and running but mistakes will happen. Program Content Sheets MANDATORY! Look out for changes from the initial presentation in September. When in doubt, look to the rulebook for definitions. Field of play calls can not be challenged. Computer errors may. Please ask questions and point out any errors you may find. Please do not confront judges, only the Controller/Referee. There will be judges using IJS for the first time. This is a huge learning curve for them.

Basic principles of calling for Solo Dance 1. The Technical Panel shall identify what is performed despite what is listed on the Program Content Sheet. 2. Adjustments to Levels shall apply to the Level determined according to the Characteristics of Levels fulfilled. They shall not result in giving No Level to a Required Element as long as the requirements for Level 1 are met (or requirements for Basic Level for a Step Sequence). 3. To be given any Level, a Required Element must meet all the requirements for Level 1, (or requirements for Basic Level for a Step Sequence). 4. If the element is interrupted and the skater tries to continue the same element as a 2nd attempt to fill the time, this is ignored by the Technical Panel and Judges/Referee. (Does not apply to Step Sequences and Pattern Dances)

5. If a program concludes with the skater performing an element, the element and its Level shall be identified until the movement stops completely. 6. Elements started after the required duration of the program (plus the 10 seconds allowed) shall not be identified. 7. If an Edge Element is performed in a Step Sequence, whether in Short Dance or Free Dance, the Edge Element is called and given No Level. This element occupies a box. 8. If a Dance Spin is performed in a Step Sequence in Short Dance, the Dance Spin is not identified (Dance Spin is not a required element and there is no provision to identify it as an extra element)

9. If a Dance Spin is performed in a Step Sequence in Free Dance, the Dance Spin is identified as a Dance Spin and given No Level. This Dance Spin occupies a box. 10. Set(s) of Twizzles performed in required Step Sequences (including Pattern Dance Type Step Sequences) shall not be identified. 11. If there is an illegal movement during the execution of any element, the deduction for an illegal movement will apply and the element will receive Level 1 if the requirements for at least Level 1 are fulfilled (for Step Sequence requirements for Basic Level). Otherwise the element will be called No Level.

Technical Requirements for Pattern Dance The TS will call the dance name and then sequence one on step one of the dance. The TS will call the dance name again and then sequence two at the first step of the second pattern. This repeats for as many patterns as are required. The TS will call Fall if there is a fall anywhere from the time the skater starts to move until they stop. Characteristics of Levels for Pattern Dance: The skater must complete 75% of the dance to get a level 1 for the sequence.

Technical Requirements for Pattern Dance Additional notes Skaters Choice is now part of the combined event. Skaters may choose an existing piece of music used for the dance or choose a new piece of music that meets the BPM and time length requirements. The CR will time the BPM of each piece and apply a deduction to those that fall outside the allowable ranges. The TJ will time the overall length of the performance from when the skaters moves until they stop. If it goes over the allowable time the TJ will alert the CR so they can take the appropriate time violation deduction.

How to time skaters choice music The first thing you ll need to do is access the timing chart

On the chart, find the dance and look for the number of measures per pattern. This is the easiest way to count. At the end of the chart you ll see the acceptable time range for one pattern of the dance. Using a stop watch, start the watch on beat one of the first measure and count until you ve reached the end of the number of measures per pattern. Hit the stop watch on beat one of the next measure! Look at the time and compare it to the allowable range in the chart. The overall time on the chart is from when the skater moves to when they stop. This is timed by the Technical Judge.

Pattern Dance Q&A

Technical Requirements for Elements

Code: Ee Edge Elements SOV same as for lifts. Characteristics of Level - Maximum of Level 1 The first edge element(s) performed will be called for level. Small/quick movements on an edge will not be called. Short edge elements must be held in position on a single curve for at least 3 seconds to get a level 1. An edge element that is not held for 3 seconds or is executed on more than one curve will be called, but called no value.

Short edge elements will have a maximum time limit of 6 seconds. The CR will time the entire length of the element and the TS will record time in position. When different positions are required for each edge element, each new edge element must have a different look than previous edge elements. Two different kinds of spirals may be used if the look is completely different. Combination elements are made up of two short edge elements skated on two different lobes, but no more, to form a serpentine like pattern.

Each portion of the Combination edge element will receive a level 1 or no value if it doesn t meet the requirements for a level 1. If the second part of the Combination Edge Element is not on a different lobe, then the second part will be called a no value. Combination edge elements will have a maximum time limit of 12 seconds. Edge elements must be on an edge for a majority of the element. If the majority is done on a flat, it will be called with a no value. If additional edge elements are performed and maintained for three or more seconds, they shall be identified, given no value and the CR will give an additional element penalty per violation.

Edge Element Q&A

Choreographic Spin: Code: Sp or CoSp SOV of Spins Characteristics of Level: Maximum of Level 1 A spin must rotate at least three revolutions to be confirmed. A spin with less than three revolutions will not be called. A combination spin is a spin with a change of foot. Each foot must have 3 revolutions in order to receive a level 1. Changes of position are allowed in both spins and combination spins.

The Choreographic Spin is performed on the spot and not significantly traveling across the ice. (not to be confused with couples choreographic spinning movement) A spin with a flying entry will be called as no value with an illegal element. The CR will apply the -1 deduction for the included illegal flying entry. If additional spins of three revolutions or more are performed, they will be called with no value and the TCR will give an additional element penalty.

Spins Q&A

Step Sequences: Codes: same as couples SOV same as couples Characteristics of Levels: Maximum Level 2 A Step Sequence not interrupted more than 50% of the pattern in total, either through stumbles, falls or any other reason is required to receive a base value. A Step Sequence not interrupted more than 25% of the pattern in total, either through Stumbles, Falls or any other reason and includes at least 1 difficult identifiable turn is required to receive a level 1.

A Step Sequence where the pattern has no interruptions, either through Stumbles, Falls or any other reason and includes at least 2 different identifiable difficult turns and a one-foot section made up of at least one bracket, one counter, one rocker and one twizzle, is required to get a level 2. (One difficult turn in the one-foot section must be clean and only the first one foot section will be evaluated if there is more than one.) List of difficult turns for consideration: Rocker, Counter, Bracket, Twizzle or double Twizzle, Outside Mohawk or Choctaw. Juvenile will have a Choreographic Step (ChSt) which is confirmed or is a no value and will use the requirements of a base level step sequence. (50% not interrupted by stumbles, falls or any other reason)

Step Sequences Q&A

Solo Twizzles: Code SoTw or psotw for Juvenile SOV same as Couples Characteristics of Levels: Maximum of Level 4 Features: Elbow(s) at least at level with or higher than the level of the shoulders (hand(s) can be above the head, at the same level as the head, or lower than the head). Arms clasped behind and held away from the back. A jump as an entry. The landing edge must be the entry edge of the first twizzle. No toe jumps. Grabbing the skate of the free leg. Note: Feature must be attained within first half of the first rotation.

Level 1: At least one rotation on each foot*. May start on any entry edge and rotate in any direction. (for Juvenile, only one twizzle on one foot is required) Level 2: At least two rotations on each foot and one feature*. If any turn is not skated correctly ie; checked turns or pirouette, it will be reduced by one level. Level 3: At least three rotations on each foot* and one feature. If any turn is not skated correctly ie; checked turns or pirouette, it will be reduced by one level. If more than one turn is incorrect, it will be reduced to a level 1. Level 4: At least four rotations on each foot* and one feature. If any turn is not skated correctly ie; checked turns or pirouette, it will be reduced by one level. If more than one turn is incorrect, it will be reduced to a level 1. *This does not apply to Juvenile as a twizzle is only required on one foot. Juvenile will have the code of psotw to reflect the lower base value of a twizzle vs. as set of twizzles.

Notes and Adjustment to Levels: All features must be attained within the first 1 2 rotation and held for all revolutions for credit to be awarded for the feature. The feature may be performed in either twizzle or both, but will only count when done correctly the first time. If the skater puts their foot down, even if just a quick touch down, the TS will stop counting revolutions. If the skater falls, the set or twizzles will be awarded the level achieved prior to the fall. If there is a full stop before the first twizzle, the level of the set of twizzles shall be reduced by one level.

Solo Twizzles Q&A

Code SoDs Dance Stop: SOV same as couples choreo elements. Characteristics of Level: Confirmed or No Value A dance stop must come near to a complete stop before dancing movements commence to get a confirmed call. A stop must be held for 3 seconds or it will not be called. A stop that is not identifiable because of constant movement will not be called regardless of the planned program sheet.

If more than one stop of up to 6 seconds is performed the tech panel will ignore this and the judges will take this in to consideration in their component scores. If there is a fall during the stop before 3 seconds, the stop will be called a no value. The call would be Stop, No Value, Fall. This way the DO knows to add a fall in to the deductions.

Dance Stop Q&A

Illegal Elements/Falls Falls: A fall is defined as loss of control by a skater with the result that the majority of his/her own body weight is on the ice supported by any other part of the body other than the blades e.g. hand(s), knee(s), back, buttock(s) or any part of the arm. Illegal Elements: The following elements and movements are illegal in the Short Dance & Free Dance: Jumps of more than one 1/2 revolution Two or more consecutive 1/2 revolution jumps Lying on the ice or kneeling on both knees.

Final Q&A
