Tena koutou e te whanau, he mihi nui kia koutou katoa Dear Parents, Whānau and Caregivers Many thanks to the 611 parents who attended 905 conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. These conferences are designed to ensure that our pupils can share their learning with you and our staff in a supportive environment. We also want our students to understand that learning is a big part of everyone s life, no matter what age and to develop an awareness of the extent to which they are owners of their learning, Recently I came across this quote from Papert (1998): the model that says learn while you re at school, while you re young, the skills that you will apply during your lifetime is no longer tenable. The skills that you can learn when you re at school will not be applicable. They will be obsolete by the time you get into the workplace and need them, except for one skill. The one really competitive skill is the skill of being able to learn. It is the skill of being able not to give the right answer to questions about what you were taught in school, but to make the right response to situations that are outside the scope of what you were taught in school. We need to produce people who know how to act when they re faced with situations for which they were not specifically prepared. Learning how to learn and being able to communicate this learning is an important part of being a self-directed learner at our school. These conferences are one way we can help reinforce this ideal. Your children were excited to share their learning with you we know how important home-school links are, and this is another way that we can reinforce this with our students. As we approach a long weekend we thought an article on the importance of being bored might be an interesting read! Click here to read, or copy the following url into your browser: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/nurturing-resilience/201206/letkids-be-bored-occasionally Have a lovely Easter weekend and see you all on Wednesday 4 th April.
