FISH BITES The Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres play the second game of their three-game series tonight at Petco Park, the fifth game of Miami s nine-game trip. RHP Dan Straily (1-1, 4.61) is starting for Miami; he is facing the Padres for the first time in his career. Starting for San Diego is RHP Jered Weaver (0-1, 4.24), who is facing the Marlins for the first time since 2011, when he beat the Fish, 2-1, at Sun Life Stadium with the Angels in his only career start. The Marlins are 1-3 on this nine-game, 11-day, cross-country trip, visiting Seattle (1-2), San Diego (0-1) and Philadelphia (April 25-27) before returning home to take on Pittsburgh (April 28-30) and Tampa Bay (May 1-2). LAST NIGHT AGAINST SAN DIEGO The Marlins fell to the Padres, 5-3, at Petco Park last night as San Diego scored four times in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. Adam Conley allowed one run in six innings of work, but did not get a decision. Marcell Ozuna hit a solo home run to tie the score in the second inning. The Padres big blow came on a three-run home run by Austin Hedges off David Phelps (2-2) with two outs in the seventh. The Marlins rallied in the ninth, scoring two on Giancarlo Stanton s fifth home run, and had the tying run at the plate, but could not tie the game. AGAINST THE PADRES Miami and San Diego split the 2016 series, 3-3, with the Marlins going 2-1 here at Petco Park. Last year was Miami s first series win in San Diego since 2012, as the team has dropped 11 of their last 15 games here. Overall, Miami is 84-95 against San Diego, with a 40-45 mark in San Diego and 20-24 mark at Petco Park. The Marlins have not won consecutive series at San Diego since 2009-10. ALMOST BEST vs. THE WEST Last season, Miami was 20-12 against the NL West, their first winning season vs. the NL West since 2012 (19-15), and 10-6 on the road in NL West cities. Their.625 winning percentage vs. the NL West overall, and their.625 winning percentage on the road, both ranked second among NL teams last year, behind Pittsburgh (22-11/.667 overall; 11-5/.688 on the road). Miami s 20 wins vs. the NL West were also the second-most by any non-nl West team, behind Pittsburgh s 22. AT PETCO Giancarlo Stanton is hitting.288 (15x52) with six home runs in 17 career games here at Petco Park. He has a.422 on-base percentage and a.692 slugging percentage, for a 1.114 OPS here. The 1.114 OPS ranks as the third-highest all-time (min. 60 plate appearances), behind Lance Berkman (1.202) and Andruw Jones (1.159). This is also the site where he won his first Home Run Derby Contest, during the 2016 All-Star Week here in San Diego. - Stats LLC DRIVING THEM IN Marcell Ozuna is currently tied with Bryce Harper for the Major League lead with 20 RBI. Ozuna has driven in at least one run in 10 of Miami s 16 games. The 20 RBI this month by Ozuna are already his highest total in any one month for his career. His previous high was 17, done three times: May, 2014; May, 2016; June, 2016. PITCHING IN At the plate, Marlins pitchers have combined to hit.185 (5x27), which currently leads the National League. The team s five hits are also tied with Chicago for most in the NL by pitchers. Edinson Volquez has two hits, while Tom Koehler, Adam Conley & Wei-Yin Chen each have one. BACK ON TRACK Christian Yelich opened the season batting just.214 (6x28) through the first six games, with five runs, one home run and two RBI. Over the last 10 games, he is batting.317 (13x41), with 12 runs, three home runs and 10 RBI. Yelich, who was a 2016 National League Silver Slugger Award winner, opened last season with a.346 mark in April. Yelich saw his career-best streak of seven straight games with an RBI come to an end last night. APRIL POWERS The Marlins have hit 21 home runs in 16 games this season, tied for fourth-most in the National League. The 21 home runs also match the Club s total in all of April last season, and has already surpassed the total for home runs in April by the 2015 team, which hit just 13 home runs in 22 games in April. The Club mark for April is 35 home runs, done by the 2001 & 2008 Marlins. Marcell Ozuna, who hit his sixth home run of the season last night, entered this season with just six career home runs in April combined thru his first four seasons, tied for his fewest in any month; he hit three home runs last April and three in April, 2014. Ozuna came into the year with a career mark of.267 (67x251), but is hitting.333 (21x63) this month to boost his career April average to.280 (88x314). SINGLES PARTY Miami currently ranks third in the National League with 148 hits on the season, while leading the NL with 111 singles and ranking second in MLB, behind Boston (119).
