General The Academy is required under the Health and Safety at Wrk Act 1974 t have a First Aid Plicy. This plicy is in line with the lcal authrity s generic plicy, and cntains the plicies and prcedures t be used in this Academy. Aim t ensure that the Academy has adequate and apprpriate equipment, facilities and prcedures t prvide apprpriate first aid; and t ensure that the first aid arrangements are based n a risk assessment f the Academy. Respnsibilities The Academy Trust is respnsible fr the verall prvisin. Internal management The internal management respnsibility fr first aid is delegated t the Principal. The Principal is respnsible fr develping detailed prcedures. The Principal ensures that parents are aware f the Academy s health and safety and first aid plicies. The Schl Welfare Officer is in charge f first aid prvisin, and will: ensure that the first aid prvisin is adequate and apprpriate; carry ut apprpriate risk assessments in liaisn with the Principal; ensure that the number f first aiders/appinted persns meets the assessed need; ensure that the equipment and facilities are fit fr purpse; and regularly keep the Principal infrmed f the implementatin f the plicy; Teachers cnditins f emplyment d nt include giving first aid. Staff may, hwever, vlunteer t undertake first aid tasks. Hwever, all staff in charge f pupils (including vlunteer staff) must use their best endeavurs at all times, particularly in emergencies, t secure the welfare f the pupils in the same way that parents wuld be expected t act twards children. Trained staff may take actin beynd the initial management stage. Other staff must prvide aid nly t the level f qualificatin r cmpetence they pssess. Any member f staff wh is the first respnder t an incident shuld send a runner t Receptin t call an ambulance immediately if it is clear that a serius injury has been sustained r a situatin demands prfessinal medical attentin. A first aider shuld als be ntified t attend. The first respnder must stay with the injured/ill student. Duties f a first aider They must: - cmplete an apprved HSE training curse; - give immediate help t casualties; and - ensure that when necessary an ambulance r ther prfessinal medical help is called. Bth first aiders and appinted persns will be expected t fllw any Academy r gvernment guidance. Number f first aiders/appinted persns Guidance n the numbers is given in Appendix A. Appinted persns They are nt first aiders. They: - take charge when smene is ill r injured; - lk after the first aid equipment if required and 1

- ensure that medical help is called when necessary. They shuld NOT give first aid treatment. The Academy will, hwever, ensure that they are trained in cping with emergencies. The training will include: - what t d in an emergency; - cardipulmnary resuscitatin; - first aid fr the uncnscius casualty; - first aid fr the wunded r bleeding; - defibrillatr training and CPR - head injuries and cncussin Number and lcatin f first aid cntainers Guidance n the number are given in Appendix B Defibrillatrs There are 2 AED s situated in the building. These are situated in schl in the fllwing areas: -1 Receptin area f the main schl building -1 Receptin area f the Sprts Hall. Risk assessments The persn respnsible fr first aid makes suitable and sufficient risk assessments in the Academy t determine any extra prvisin required ver and abve the minimum prvisin. The risk assessments must als cver the risks t emplyees and als any nn-emplyees wh may cme int the Academy. Infrmatin New members f staff and new pupils are given infrmatin abut the prcedure in the event f an accident as part f their inductin. First aid ntices are lcated arund the Academy with details f whm and where the first aiders and appinted persns are and where first the first aid bxes are. Insurance The Academy Trust ensures that insurance arrangements prvide full cver fr claims arising frm actins f staff acting within the scpe f their emplyment. This respnsibility is devlved t the Academy Finance Directr. Training The Academy prvides adequate and apprpriate training fr first aid staff including use f the AED and apprpriate infrmatin fr all staff t enable them t carry ut their duty f care. The gvernrs ensure that there are sufficient trained staff t meet statutry requirements and the assessed needs, allwing fr staff wh are absent r ff-site. The member(s) f the Leadership Grup respnsible fr CPD will keep up t date recrds f all first aid training and will ensure sufficient staff have current qualificatins. Hspitalisatin If there is dubt r cncern abut an individual's cnditin they will be taken t hspital by ambulance r by a parent/guardian by car accmpanied by a first aider. The nearest hspital is: Calderdale Ryal, tel. number 01422 357171 If a pupil is taken t hspital the cntact parent/carer will be infrmed and will be met by the first respnder at the hspital. 2

Recrds The Academy keeps recrds f all accidents and injuries with details f any first aid treatment. These recrds are regularly reviewed as n-ging risk assessments t help the Academy identify accident trends and pssible areas fr imprvement in cntrl f health and safety risks. These recrds are als used fr reference in future first aid needs assessments. Guidance Natinal guidance is prvided in the gvernment s dcument First Aid in Academies http://www.educatin.gv.uk/academys/pupilsupprt/pastralcare/health/firstaid/a0010622/first-aid Equal pprtunities The Academy will take particular care with the first aid prvisin fr its disabled and/r pregnant staff and disabled pupils. Apprpriate risk assessments will be dne by the persn in charge f first aid, and suitable prvisin will be made in liaisn with the Principal. Mnitring and review The Principal will review the first aid needs and arrangements annually, and will ensure that the apprpriate level f first aiders/appinted persns are in pst, and that the apprpriate standards are met. The gverning bdy will receive an annual reprt frm the Principal and will review the plicy every tw years. 3

APPENDIX A Number f first aid persnnel There are n rules n exact numbers. The Academy will make a judgement based n lcal circumstances, having cnsidered likely risks t staff, pupils and visitrs. The Academy will have regard t any advice frm the LA. The Health and Safety Cmmissin (HSC) recmmends: - in lw risk places, including nrmally, Academies 1 first aider t every 50 t 100 peple. - In a medium risk place, which might include sme special needs and specialist engineering Academies/clleges - 1 first aider fr every 50 peple. The Academy has taken the abve int accunt and currently have 36 qualified first aiders and a minimum number wuld be 30. The Academy has als take int accunt the need fr adequate cver at breaks and lunchtimes, during practical lessns and PE and games activities, and n ff-site activities. The Schl Welfare Officer is available during break and lunch times. Wherever practicable the Academy will train lunchtime supervisrs in first aid. 4

APPENDIX B First aid bxes The first aid bxes will be lcated as agreed by the Principal as fllws: The schl has first aid kits as fllws: - 1 the medical rm; - 1 the PE department; - 1 in each f the Technlgy Rms (7 in ttal); - 1 each f the Science rms (10 in ttal); - 1 in the Schl Office; - 1 the schl kitchen; - 1 in the Sixth Frm ffice - 1 Sprts Hall - 1 Student Supprt Area - 1 Caretaker s Office All staff knw where the first aid bxes are kept. There are First Aid ntices displayed arund the Academy. All bxes are checked every three mnths. There is a list f First Aiders in each bx. The bxes cntain a sufficient quantity f first aid material and nthing else. The Academy requires the fllwing items t be in the bx as a minimum. Guidance card 1 Individually wrapped sterile adhesive dressings 10 Sterile eye pads, with attachment 2 Triangular bandages 2 NB These are n lnger used fr the immbilisatin f limb injuries Sterile cverings fr serius wunds (where applicable) 4 Safety pins 12 Hypallergenic adhesive tape t use instead f safety pins 1 rll Medium size, sterile unmedicated dressings 2 Small absrbent wund dressings fr finger injuries 2 Large, sterile unmedicated dressings 6 Extra large, sterile, unmedicated dressings 6 Dispsable glves 2 (These shuld be nitrile, rather than vinyl t give mre dexterity and eliminate pssible latex allergies) Resuscitatin face shield 1 The persn in charge f first aid will determine whether there shuld be mre than the minimum items. The first aid cntainer shuld be able t fit all f the relevant cmpnents inside and clse securely, and shuld be clean, dust prf and prvide prtectin fr the cntents in a wrkplace envirnment. 5
