FISH BITES The Marlins continue a 10-game homestand today, matching the longest homestand of the season, with the finale of this four-game set against the Chicago Cubs at 1:10 p.m. Right-hander Edinson Volquez (3-8, 4.19), making his 15th start of the season, is 7-0 with a 3.06 ERA in 12 career appearances (11 starts) against the Cubs. The Marlins will face LHP Mike Montgomery (1-3, 2.26) for the second time this season, his first start; he earned a save against the Fish on June 5 at Wrigley, tossing 3.1 scoreless. Today's ceremonial first pitches will be thrown out by DJ Irie, Reece Springer, former Marlin Chuck Smith and actress Lori Petty, and the national anthem is being performed by Joshua Oberfoell. Miami came into the homestand after dropping two of three to the Atlanta Braves at SunTrust Park. The Marlins opened the current homestand by taking two of three from the first-place Washington Nationals, and following this series will entertain the Mets in a three-game set, Tuesday-Thursday. YESTERDAY VS. CHICAGO Miami's bats were stifled once again, registering four hits in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs. After a first-inning run by the Cubs, J.T. Realmuto put the Marlins on top with his seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot to left. The Fish were limited to just two hits over the remaining eight innings; a Dee Gordon single in the sixth and a Martín Prado single in the seventh. Justin Nicolino allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking none and striking out four over 4.0 innings. Nick Wittgren (1-1) was handed the loss in relief. AGAINST THE CUBS Miami trails the 2017 series against Chicago, 2-4, after dropping two of three at Wrigley Field from June 5-7 and two of three to open this series. The Marlins are 94-97 all-time against the Cubs, which includes a 47-45 record in South Florida (11-9 at Marlins Park), and have taken six of the last nine at home. UP NEXT Following tomorrow's off-day, Miami will play host to the New York Mets in a three-game midweek series. The Marlins lead the 2017 series, 6-4, with three of those wins coming at home. The two intra-division rivals have played to a 100-100 tie in South Florida, with Miami holding a 26-25 advantage at Marlins Park. The Marlins trail the all-time series, however, 193-212. LOOKING FOR A TURNAROUND Over a three-start stretch from May 29-June 8, Edinson Volquez was nearly unhittable, as he allowed just one run and six hits over 22.0 innings pitched (0.41 ERA). In two starts since, he has allowed 11 runs (10 earned) and nine hits over 8.2 innings. He is facing a Cubs franchise that he has gone 7-0 against in his career, with a 3.06 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts). Among active pitchers, he owns the best record against the Cubs, ahead of Mike Minor (6-0) and Jorge De La Rosa (5-0). Volquez is one of seven active pitchers (eight instances) to have a record of 7-0 or better against an opponent: Jason Hammel (9-0 vs. Wash.), Clayton Kershaw (8-0 vs. the Mets), Trevor Bauer (7-0 vs. Houston), Joe Blanton (7-0 vs. Colorado), Yu Darvish (7-0 vs. Detroit), Jon Lester (7-0 vs. Philly) and Volquez again (7-0 vs. Miami) are the others. STANDING OUT AGAINST SOUTHPAWS As a team, Miami ranks fourth in the National League and seventh in the Majors with a.265 (157x592) average against left-handed pitchers. The White Sox lead the Majors with a.303 mark, followed by Boston (.279), Atlanta (.275), Washington (.273), Colorado (.272) and Houston (.267). The Fish have three players in the National League s top 25 in average against southpaws (min. 45 PA): Justin Bour ranks 10th at.354, Marcell Ozuna is 13th at.345 and J.T. Realmuto is 24th at.313. Bour leads the Majors in average among left-handed hitters against lefty pitchers (min. 48 at-bats). His six home runs off left-handers are tied with Eric Thames for third in MLB in left-on-left matchups, behind Anthony Rizzo (7) and Joey Votto (7). Prior to this season, Bour had a career.233 mark (23x103) against lefties, with no home runs. OSO GRANDE With his 20th home run of the season Thursday night, Marcell Ozuna became just the ninth Marlins' player (11th time) in club history to record 20+ home runs prior to the All-Star break. He is tied with Giancarlo Stanton (2014) as the seventh-fastest Marlins player to 20 home runs in terms of individual games played (71). Stanton owns the record for fewest games to 20 home runs, doing so in 58 games in 2015. Mike Lowell (28) owns the Club record for most home runs prior to the break, followed by Stanton (27 in 2015), Gary Sheffield (25 in 1996), Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla (23 in 2008), Cliff Floyd (21 in 2001), Stanton (21 in 2014), Miguel Cabrera (20 in 2004), Lowell (20 in 2004) and Stanton (20 in 2016). - Stats LLC FIRST AND FOURMOST Miami is getting serious production from its first basemen this season, as they have combined for 23 home runs and a.291 average through 73 games.
