Biddlemania Jesse Biddle won his sixth game of the year on Thursday after allowing just one earned run over five innings of work In the second half, Biddle is 3-2, 1.91 and has the league s best ERA after the All-Star break Biddle also has the second best ERA in the league (2.41) since May 1 st, trailing Hickory s Cody Buckel He was a first round pick last year from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is the sixth former first round pick to play for the BlueClaws. On Base Machine BlueClaws 2B Carlos Alonso has reached base 33 times in the last 16 games (20-48 with 13 walks) and has driven in nine runs A 35 th round pick last year from Delaware, Alonso joined the BlueClaws on July 9 th and after starting 2-15, is 33-89 He hit his first home run of the year (4 th of his career) on August 13 at Greensboro. Running Claws The BlueClaws are 5 th in the league with 143 stolen bases this year Anthony Hewitt (2 nd in SAL) leads the team with 32 and has only been caught four times Zach Collier is 29-41 and Miguel Alvarez is also 12-15 in steals for the BlueClaws this year As a team, Lakewood is 143-186 (.773), second best percentage in the league. Looking for a Winner The BlueClaws need to go at 8-7 over their last 15 games to ensure a winning overall record for the seventh sixth straight year Lakewood had a winning record in 2004 and then in each year from 2006-2010 This would be their seventh winning record in 11 seasons of play The BlueClaws also need to go 7-8 to ensure a winning record for the 11 th of their last 12 halves. K Man Since allowing runs in back to back outings on July 18 th and 28 th, Tyler Knigge has given up just two runs in 15.2 innings pitched covering eight outings and has 12 strikeouts over that stretch He gave up one run in 4.1 innings against West Virginia on August 5 th and earned the win with three shutout innings on Wednesday against Delmarva Knigge then threw three perfect innings against Greensboro on August 20 th. Miscellaneous Stats The BlueClaws are 25-20 in one-run games this year and have played the second most in the league, behind Greenville (22-25) The BlueClaws are tied for the league lead in extra-inning games having played 14 (6-8, tied with Lexington) The BlueClaws also led the league last year, having played 23 (13-10) When BlueClaws starting pitchers finish five innings, the team is 52-38 compared to 8-23 when the starter doesn t finish five innings They are 33-19 when the starting pitcher finishes six innings. Tomorrow s Pitcher LHP Ervis Manzanillo (3-4, 2.92) starts for Lakewood on Monday night at Perdue Stadium in the first game of a four-game series against Delmarva Manzanillo gave up four runs in 2.1 innings against the Shorebirds on Wednesday, walking a career high seven hitters in that outing He gave up one run over five innings at Greensboro in his previous outing on 8/11 Manzanillo, who turns 20 on August 25 th, split last year between the GCL Phillies and Williamsport and has been in Lakewood s rotation all year.
